This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Well, to be fair, you do keep maturing, but after 25 at the oldest, the things you rely on maturity to help you with don't get any better. Nervous around women? Never goes away. Self-conscious about what you say to your friends? That's a lifetime companion too. You mostly just learn to fake it better, or at least that's my experience. On the other hand, it's hard to imagine Giovanna with sweaty palms around a cute girl, isn't it? Maybe some people do get better about that?
Lately I feel really confused. I don't know who am I and what do I really want to do in future. That's quite ironic as I am described as "man of his word" and "more mature than giggling girls". I don't like bombast, but it's horrible being waverer. (Calm down little girl, it's just an effect of hormonetherapy)
Sometimes I still feel that way too. I mean, teaching is something I feel like I can do for my whole life and not feel like I've failed, but sometimes I wonder if there's something else I should be doing...And I love bombast!
Geez, what do you guys expect, it's early.
EDIT: Good call, there, Asfalolh.

Me too. Who doesn't? Being a little bold isn't bad at all

Is this one another quote from Nietzsche?

It way better than quoting Onii-sama's words as I do. (I have strong esteem to my older brother.)

That's sweet, dlaire. I wish I had a good relationship with my elder brother. And actually, the sig is...just me.

Hey, that's a great idea!

Maybe I present one:

Here are the quotes I have been using on my dA account.
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Survival is being able to pull the wool over the wolves' eyes.
Deviousness is convincing the wolves to dress up like sheep so they will eat each other.

That's right. I also like quote from "Adaptation" (I havo only polish sub so I must translate this again, so I could do this wrong):
"I discovered that the reason why doing something with passion is so important, is that we must reduce our world into a size, which we can bear."
hm, I remembered Gertuda Stein's quote: Rose is a rose is a rose.
I don't get it, what should it mean?

I think of it as meaning that some things just don't change what they are. It will always be what it is.
If that makes any sense.

One of my favorite quotes is usually attributed to Voltaire, but I believe it is actually from Evelyn Beatrice Hall's The Friends of Voltaire:
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
That just strikes a chord with me.

Although it's a wonderfully funny movie, SLC Punk [Salt Lake City Punk, to clarify] is actually pretty insightful.

Bad news guys. I've finally gotten my hands on a proper translation of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Forgive me for that, and forgive me that I'll probably be posting little pieces of it a lot from now on. What the hell, you don't have to read it, do you?
Nietzsche wrote:
Man is a rope, tied between beast and overman - a rope over an abyss. A dangerous across, a dangerous on-the-way, a dangerous looking-back, a dangerous shuddering and stopping.
What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not an end: what can be loved in man is that he is an overture and a going under.
...
I love those who do not first seek behind the stars for a reason to go under and be a sacrifice, but who sacrifice themselves for the earth, that the earth may someday become the overman's.
...
I love him who does not hold back one drop of spirit for himself, but wants to be entirely the spirit of his virtue: thus he strides over the bridge as spirit.
I love him who makes his virtue his addiction and his catastrophe: for his virtue's sake he wants to live on and to live no longer.
I love him who does not want to have too many virtues. One virtue is more virtue than two because it is more of a noose on which his catastrophe may hang.
I love him whose soul squanders itself, who wants no thanks and returns none: for he always gives away and does not want to preserve himself.
I love him who is abashed when the dice fall to make his fortune, and asks, "Am I then a crooked gambler?" For he wants to perish.
I love him who casts golden words before his deeds and always does even more than he promises: for he wants to go under.
...
I love him who chastens his god because he loves his god: for he must perish of the wrath of his god.
I love him whose soul is deep, even in being wounded, and who can perish of a small experience: thus he goes gladly over the bridge.
I love him whose soul is overfull so that he forgets himself, and all things are in him: thus all things spell his going under.
I love him who has a free spirit and a free heart: thus his head is only the entrails of his heart, but his heart drives him to go under.
I love all those who are as heavy drops, falling one by one out of the dark cloud that hangs over man: they herald the advent of the lightning, and, as heralds, they perish.
Behold, I am a herald of the lightning and a heavy drop from the cloud...

Kidding. Thank you for that, Stormcrow. It was all very insightful, however, this:

But Utena has too many virtues, looking at the bare minimum of the quote casts her out. I'd say Touga, perhaps?
And oh god, I just finished up a fresh batch of Shiori icons. Don't make me come over there and show you how much of a Shiori I can be.
God, that sounded so sexual. Start flirting with my best friend and I'll see what I can do.
Offline
Well, any of these statements can apply or not at different times. Certainly when Utena was trying to sex it up to steal Akio from Anthy, she had more than one thing on her mind. But at her finest, she was focused single-mindedly on being the prince to the exclusion of all else, including self-preservation. You could say that it became her "will to power". Hmm...now that I've got the source material on hand, I may get more serious about writing character analyses from the Nietzschean perspective.
And please stop trying to get me arrested.

I'm not sure I understand that particular quote. If someone is honest and loyal and reliable, is that three virtues (honesty, loyalty, and reliability) or one virtue (integrity, for lack of a better word)? Is Nietzsche promoting clarity of purpose -- "single-mindedness" -- and warning against serving two masters/agendas, on the theory that if for example a policeman seeks to be lawful and humane, he'll run into problems when the law isn't humane? Is it really more virtuous for the policeman be inflexible in pursuit of the law than for him to apply his humanity to his job?
Also, those quotes tend to emphasize altruism a lot more than I expected! I thought Nietzsche was more of an "enlightened selfishness" kind of guy -- be no one's sacrificial lamb, but recognize that other people's happiness affects yours.
