This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Double post:
Diana Wynne Jones passed away today. She was known as the author who wrote Howl's Moving Castle and Crestomanci.
I knew in the past that she's not been feeling well, was kind of afraid that this will happen. But... not this soon.

They always say these things come in threes. Geraldine Ferraro passed away today. She was the first woman to run for Vice President in the United States. She was Walter Mondale's running mate in 1984 as they ran against Ronald Reagan's re-election campaign.

R.I.P. Jeff Conway. He died of pneumonia a couple of days ago and was probably most well know as Kenickie in the movie Grease.

James Arness of 'Gunsmoke' died today. He was 88. R.I.P, Mr. Dillon. Oops, I mean, Marshal.

Our shining star is gone guys.
Tomoko Kawakami passes away. For those not in the know, she is the voice of Utena.
I feel really sad right now.

I was shocked to hear that too, and when I saw that post you made on twitter, Anji, I was like D:

... Tomoko??
Maybe she's not dead. Maybe she's still alive somewhere in the world, and we just need to go out and find her.
Or maybe she's still alive in her work as Utena, and Hikaru, and the shows I haven't seen... and hopefully in the memories of her loved ones.
Forty-one, ovarian cancer. Not fucking fair.

No way. Only forty-one? *sighs* I swear sometimes God either just isn't paying attention or doesn't care.

Just heard about her passing. So sad. RIP.

What the hell!
Cancer ruins everything.
Soooo depressed

Christopher Hitchens, author of God Is Not Great, died yesterday of complications from cancer. I never much liked his philosophy, which was much too strident for my taste, but I respected him as a freethinker and as a writer.
Offline
R.I.P Maurice Sendak, author of Where The Wild Things Are. He was one of my favorite childhood authors.

Riri, that was one of the first things I saw this morning, linked on the Regretsy forums. My heart was just about broken.

That wasn't even one of my favorite books but it makes me sad to think he's dead.

I think I'd make an awesome dictator of Egypt or something. Suppression of the Islamists would be one of the first things on my agenda, and that alone would get me billions of dollars of Western foreign aid per year. I'd use that money to implement all kinds of public works projects and scientific experiments with their massive engineering corps, use intelligence operatives to precipitate a crisis in Libya, then send in a bunch of "peacekeeping" troops to "safeguard" their oil and natural gas while allowing them to maintain sovereignty over everything that doesn't turn an easy profit. I'd sell the oil at discount prices to Western Europe and the US to keep them from complaining too much. After maybe 15 years of oil-fueled military buildup, I'd move on to the rest of OPEC.
Then I'll create a decentralized, international electronic currency like Bitcoin and sell oil using all the world's currencies instead of just the "petrodollar," destroying the USD and bringing the international economy and US dominance thereof to its knees. China, Japan, South Korea, Germany, and Russia will dominate the new world order with their newfound purchasing power, and Zeon will prevail.

While this is pretty funny, this is the "notable deaths" thread, not the "what I would do if I were dictator of a Middle Eastern nation" thread. But the OP doesn't really make that terribly clear, so I'm actually gonna edit the title after all these years!

the title of this thread always threw me, even though it's what I think of everytime I hear a notable death: "Oh, Saparmurat's gonna see some use today." It's like my watchword for death.

WHY'D YOU HAVE TO REMIND ME THAT TOMOKO KAWAKAMI WAS DEAD
Offline
Tomoko Kawakami is one of the most emotionally engaging voice actress I've come across in anime; her work in Utena, especially in the final Ep 39, was the most sincere and moving I've ever heard in any anime. I know it's very late of me to say this now, but may the talented lady rest in peace.
