This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Man, Tokyo Tower is like the most destructable building in all of manga/anime-dom.
Those Saionji colorings are beautiful.

Ohtori can't be that close to Tokyo Metropolitan, can it?
The episode Nanami's Egg. You can see her near the bottom of the picture. It's when she's running to get her egg back after she abandoned it.

As much as we try not to believe it, I'm becoming more and more convinced it is. First it's the address on the envelope, now it's Tokyo Tower. And both match up perfectly. Oh, and there's the big ferris wheel from episode 33, I think. We see that a lot in other anime too, the closing credits for Inuyasha, for example.

Episode 28 was MISERY AND HELL. God damn 34 panned shots, hay animators you suck
But I'm done. Here, have some sword yankin' Shiori-style!

I love Shiori's Rose Bride dress. It's nice to see that they finally got the color for the earrings right. During Kozue's duel, they kept changing from gold to blue. At some point they were gold and blue at the same time.
I'm taking some screenshots for that episode as well so that I can finish up my analysis on the symbolism in episode 28 and 29. There's so much random, "Hay, I'm looking in a certain direction, and that's symbolic!" that I end up having to take a lot of screenshots to explain all of it. (The fact that she hurt her left eye in the car crash is symbolic too. Not to mention the sword. God, it makes my head hurt.)

It's strange but the various sword-drawing scenes are among the most beautiful visual highlights of the series. Or is it just me? It's really odd how beautiful and powerful they are, and there is no obvious reason why. I never heard of such a thing outside of Utena so it is not like they are ancient Jungian motifs and yet they have tremendous psychological resonance.

I ran into that problem myself. It's all I can do to keep the episodes in the Akio Arc from not hitting 300 caps each. I'm looking forward to that! I had a lot of thoughts about it while I was capping but I was capping, and I'm still picking at the Saionji thing in the BRS so I don't wanna pick up any more huge analysis projects.

I think it's because they do have Freudian/Jungian roots. They've ever been compiled quite this way, but there are ideas at work in this that resonate naturally with us. Even in the series. These sequences are beautiful, almost touching, in contrast to the sword pulling we see in the Black Rose Arc. Looks totally different when there's consent, huh? Even questionable consent. I know there were animation limitations as far as how it looks, Kozue and Shiori are animated the exact same way. I can't recall how Ruka is off the top of my head, but the animation is changes for Nanami and Saionji. Saionji's looks especially...sexual, which is odd given the other pairings are far more sexual relationships. Or most of them.

Perhaps it partly comes from the fairy tale delicacy and idealism. Shiori and Kozue seem to glow with hope and a desire to better themselves. And there is the desperation and frustration in the expressions of Juri and Ruka when he draws her sword.
Anthy's fathomless big green eyes invite a hundred questions: What is she thinking as she draws the sword from Utena? It may be just economy on the part of the animators but she has a very similar expression when she stands behind Utena to stab her.

Oh now I'm going to have to pay more attention.
By the way, what the crap with Juri's pre-car ride sequence? Ruka does half the speech and Touga shows up just long enough for the shirt-flying-open thing...and then disappears again? He's not in the car.
So far this episode is mercifully much easier on the capping than the last one. Odd, the last one was far better animated.

Oh, I get it. They spent the whole animation budget on the duel.
Edit: Ruka force-kissing Juri is kinda hot.
Okay so it's really hot.

It's in Touga's contract, only he gets to say that one line whilst his shirt magically unbuttons.
Seriously!

Indeed it is.
You know, I've probably taken at least fifty pictures of people slapping each other. (Damn jealousy.) I should make a slide show or something.

That has to be the best shot of Juri's sword in the whole damn series. Now I need to find one just like it to add to my blade colelction.

Damn, I wish they'd put the boys in Rose Bride dresses
Superb shot, by the way, Giovanna.

These panned shots are gorgeous, Gio. Just how long does it take to collate one of the bastards?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I'm right with Juri, Shiori and Kozue on that one. I love how Saionji's more worried about the color contrast than the fact that he's wearing a dress. *giggles*

And also, red does suit Touga.

I was expecting Saionji to say, "Wait...you mean we DON'T have to wear the heels?"

It certainly would be interesting to see them walk in high heels.
