This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

There's zero chance the blonde girl isn't supposed to resemble Anthy.

that mint color and general look of the uniforms definitely suggests it, although I think it's a poorly done send up/mash up of magical girl anime in general. I didn't really watch the preview, just skimmed it a bit. I have to say, I really, really hate that style. It reminds of those cheap, badly done "How to Draw" books. The sort of crude, Christopher Hart style of manga.

It's supposed to be cheap, I think.
The other thing that struck me is how similar this looks to Kill La Kill, which is also a parody of basically the same tropes.

Wow this looks terrible. I can't even describe how much i detest this. I though American animation had reached the absolute lowest level of fanservice and apathy but wow this takes it to a level worse then anime with solely sexual content or Drawn Together. I know is just a preview but come on, there's nothing at all to make me want to watch more.

WHAT THE FUCK WHO PUT A GOATEE ON TOUGA HOW CAN I LIVE IN A WORLD WITH A GOATEE'D TOUGA WTF

Hm. If anything, it sort of looks like a love letter to the shoujo genre to me. Between goatee'd Touga, color-swapped Anthy, the Sailor Moon transformation sequence, it looks like whoever's behind the show actually like shoujo a lot.
It definitely doesn't look as crude or lowbrow as Drawn Together to me, and I didn't really feel like it was making fun of the genre in a derogatory way.

OH GOD IT WAS LIKE WATCHING KILL LA KILL ONLY LAME

I have no objection to the show beyond goatee'd Touga. That is Not Okay.
Edit for not comically-exaggerated opinion:
No, I didn't think it was making fun of the genre, and definitely there are bits and pieces of other shows in there as well, but the Anthy-hairdo on that girl, and the uniform GoaTouga is wearing strike me as definite references to SKU. Then again, I don't watch anime a lot, so I wouldn't know if these showed up elsewhere in the genre....

Either they gave Touga a goatee or made him a girl, I dunno. Either way, EVERYTHING IS RUINED FOREVAH.
It almost seems more directed at Kill La Kill as a shallow homage to Utena (not that I've gotten far enough in the former to know whether this holds true) than at Utena directly.

Subtle like sledgehammer this is.
I get the deliberate bad animation, very LOL CLEVER, but if you're going to pull crap like that ironically, your dialogue better be funnier than this is.
As far as reference to KLK, I'm halfway through the show, and to be totally honest I fail to see any real referencing to SKU at all. It shares a few themes, sure, but those are all themes that are hardly groundbreaking from SKU, either. Isolated schools with strict student hierarchies and organized violence?
Offline
I can see the SKU similarities, but I think it borrows over much from Puni Puni Poemi, making it a parody of a parody. Still, looks pretty interesting to me. Won't mind having more of a look when the first ep comes out.

The only thing that reminded me of SKU specifically, rather than generic magic girl vs ridiculously powerful student council anime, was genki girl Mako. In one of the later episodes Mako turns evil and Ryuuko has to reluctantly duel her, and in another Mako gives Ryuuko some slap therapy. Her earnest friendship is adorable.

Not all of his books look like that, only some of them.

Hello dead topic shall i resurrect you as my first post back since 2010?
I'll give the //holy crap has everything changed (myself included)// speech later, but...
Just started watching Kill la Kill a month ago and the literal first thought i had was, "Is this just Utena with a new skin?" (maybe more skin?) I dont watch many shows in the same genre as SKU, so i could be missing the similarities everyone mentioned before... but this video definitely was Utena with some KLK thrown in there.
GoaTouga is what their assumption for what he'd grow up to be like...? thats just awkward and weird. . .
Blonde chick is definitely Anthy.
Should compile a list of all the anime that has a student council hierarchy that you have to fight through to win the game...

where do I start with this bullshit ...
- separating people by wealth
- drops some homosexuality there only to humiliate it, as lifestyle and fruitless
- unnecessarily scandalous costumes
if this tries to tell us that it is inspired by anime, all I see is a ridicule of anime if anything.

I find it really funny that 'Touga' married someone that looks almost exactly like him.

I'd say he's enough of a narcissist to do that. At first, he thought that Utena was the love of his life. But, in the end, he found someone far superior to her: Himself. (HEADCANNON ACHIEVED)

Thisssssssss was the last episode i watched and i said the exact same thing. Man, so many parallels for me. THE SMART NERD GUY HAS BLUE HAIR. Seriously, can someone get a hold of the creators... I need to know if these are head nods to Utena or not. That car. cmon. cmon. this whole show cmonnnnn.

Having a 'smart guy' character with blue hair is actually fairly frequent in anime. Blue hair is very often coupled with being rational, cool and collected.
And I'm still not over goatee Touga. GOATEE. TOUGA. It's like a part of me has died and I don't even like Touga. It's just...gah.

is the green haired guy always the kendo captain too? I mean i'll totally buy that, im not well versed enough.
But yes... Goatee Touga married to female Touga makes total sense... he is a bastard like that.

Dammit, now I feel obligated to watch KLK.
