This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
Dudes. Seriously. I'm not an ogre about it, I just usually don't have very much fun. But this year not a single family event in sight, so happy birthday to me!

For you, today....one of the Dragon Age/Mass Effect cross over conversations I have yet to summarize and post.
ISABELA & TALI
Part I
Tali: What do you think of the Normandy, Isabela?
Isabela: I try not to, dear.
Tali: Why not? It's an amazing ship.
Isabela: It's not a ship at all. It's, well, I don't really have words for it, but it's definitely not a ship.
Tali: Why do you think that?
Isabela: *sigh* Unless you can walk the deck and feel the wind through your hair, the warm of the sun on your face, and spray of salt across your shoulders, you're not on a ship. You're just riding in a metal chest that someone launched from a catapult.
Tali: I imagine our ancestors might have felt that way, once.
Isabela: That isn't helping.
Part II
Isabela: How can you be an admiral?
Tali: I am the Migrant Fleet's only expert on the geth. The other admirals felt my perspective was necessary for the war.
Isabela: But you've never even been a captain.
Tali: I'm not sure what you are-
Isabela: Being a captain is a big responsibility. Having to look after the welfare of the ship and all the souls aboard her, having to make decisions that could save or cost lives. You've never been in that position, have you?
Tali: Well...not for a entire ship...no.
Isabela: And now they trust you to look after several vessels?
Tali: Not exactly...
Isabela: Right...so...how can you be an admiral?
Part III
Isabela: Why don't you have a sword?
Tali: Why would I need a sword?
Isabela: For close quarters combat. Surely when you board an enemy vessel, you find yourself in a fight with their crew? Blades are very handy then.
Tali: Most enemies have kinetic barriers. Unless you have a monomolecular blade, swords cannot get through them.
Isabela: I have no idea what those things are, but I'll assume magic is involved.
Tali: Um...I suppose.
Isabela: So why don't you have one of these...mono...swords?
Tali: I have a shotgun.
Isabela: I'm almost afraid to ask...
Part IV
Tali: Well, what do you think?
Isabela: I think that everyone here is unskilled and lazy. That's what I think.
Tali: I meant about the shotgun I let you borrow.
Isabela: That's exactly what I'm talking about, dear. I trained for years to be able to gain the upper hand in a fight. To know when to parry or thrust, when to dodge and duck, and when to hold on to my blade and when to throw it. Most people here simply hide behind rocks and fire aimlessly.
Tali: I'm sorry I asked.
Isabela: Although...I do admit this...shotgun...could have gotten me out of a few tight spots.
Tali: I thought so.
Part V
Isabela: Listen, I wanted to say I was wrong.
Tali: You're apologizing?
Isabela: When I called you unskilled. I saw what you did during that last fight. Fixing that, whatever you called it...engine, was it? What with all the fires and sparking around you. I don't even know what you did, but I know that couldn't have been easy.
Tali: It wasn't. Thank you.
Isabela: Right. So, be honest. What it's like when Garrus stops calibrating the weapons and starts calibrating you?
Tali: Wha...what?
Part VI
Isabela: Come on, tell me.
Tali: No.
Isabela: You do realize that not knowing is positively killing me, don't you?
Tali: Yes.
Isabela: Oh please, give me just the smallest detail and I will let it drop.
Tali: Well...it's not small, and I don't think I've seen it drop.
Isabela: *laughs softly* Now I absolutely must know more.
Tali: But you said...
Isabela: Never trust a pirate, dear. We lie.

Even better, there was belated birthday scotch festival. I highly recommend $300 bottles of scotch for getting hammered, no hangover at all
(No I didn't actually get hammered... but the scotch was very good. )

Okay. Gio, here you go for your b-day. Another selection of my yet unposted Dragon Age / Mass Effect conversations. I'm gonna just give a few pieces this time instead of the full conversation tree.
Liara & The Mabari, Part I
Liara: What kind of animal is that??
Alistair: Him? He’s a mabari. He’s a war hound. Don’t let this one fool you, though. While he may appear terrifying, and well he is to his enemies, deep down, he’s just a happy little puppy. Isn’t that right?
Mabari: *growls*
Liara: What is a hound?
Alistair: A hound? Hmm, you know, I don’t think anyone has ever asked me that before. I suppose it’s a type of dog.
Mabari: *growls*
Alistair: I didn’t mean it like that!
Liara: I see. We do not have any form of canine life on Thessia.
Alistair: You have no hounds where you come from?
Mabari: *whines*
Liara: No. When I was very young, my mother took me to the wildlife preserve to see some of the varren. Varren are not native to Thessia, but some asari have bred them as pets since the time of the Rachni Wars when we were first introduced to them by the krogan. Since Thessia has such a high element zero concentration, many varren raised on Thessia have limited biotics and are highly prized as pets. But they frightened me. Goddess, at that age, I had never seen teeth that big. She had to carry me home in tears.
Alistair: What is a varren?
Liara: A varren is…you know, I do not think I have met someone who did not know what a varren is. It is an omnivorous pack hunter with large fangs. I have heard some humans describe them as a cross between a komodo dragon, a shark, and a sabertooth tiger.
Alistair: Oh, we’ll there’s your problem! A mabari is nothing like a dragon!
Mabari: *Happy bark*
Alistair: Go head and put your hand out so he knows you’re friendly.
Liara: …okay…
Liara: Oh, Goddess, he is licking my fingers! I…is…is this okay…?
Alistair: That’s just his way of showing affection, isn’t it, boy?
Mabari: *Happy bark*
Garrus & Alistair Part II
Alistair: So…last time I came in here you told me you were busy with calibrations.
Garrus: That’s right.
Alistair: And the time before that you said the same thing.
Garrus: Well, that time it was different. We’d just fired the Thanix cannon at a Collector vessel, and a I wanted to make sure it would be ready for the next fight.
Alistair: And the time before that?
Garrus: *sigh* Look, I can see where this is going.
Alistair: What? You can?
Garrus: Calibrating the main gun is something I do to relax. It helps me work off some stress.
Alistair: Right…See, that isn’t what I wanted to know.
Garrus: What did you want to know?
Alistair: What are calibrations?
Garrus: Hmm. I don’t think they have Thanix cannons where you come from, so let’s just say it’s a way of making sure a weapon is ready for battle.
Alistair: OH! You mean like polishing one’s sword.
Garrus; Um…no…it’s not really like-
Alistair: I knew this one Grey Warden from Orlais. He just could not stop polishing his sword. After every engagement he’d go off behind some trees for some privacy and start polishing away. We were always wondering how anyone could polish a sword that much.
Garrus: No. No it’s really not like that...
Alistair: Well it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
Garrus: Let’s talk about something else…
Samara & Sten Part III
Sten: I was also told that you killed your own daughter.
Samara: Yes. It is not something I am proud of. However, the Code demanded justice for those my daughter had killed. It was never a task that I could walk away from.
Sten: No. Duty to a higher purpose never is. But rarely does it require such a heavy sacrifice.
Samara: The sacrifice was made long before, Sten, when I became a Justicar. It was never a question of if I would have to kill my daughter. Only when.
Sten: You are worthy of respect, Justicar. Even amongst the Qun, such certainty would be admired.
Zevran & Thane Part IV
Zevran: So.. you are also an assassin?
Thane: Yes.
Zevran: You do not look like an assassin.
Thane: I would hardly be an affective assassin if one could so easily discern my abilities.
Zevran: In Antiva, an assassin can live like a king. Especially if he is a Crow.
Thane: Riches do not concern me. I have never taken a life so that I could become wealthy.
Zevran: No? Then why do it? Surely you don't enjoy the life. Or perhaps maybe you do.
Thane: I was trained since birth to be a weapon. I know nothing else. I take neither pleasure nor pain from it.
Zevran: Ah, I know deception when I hear it. You do not fool me.

Thank you, Riri!
Sorry I haven't been around the forum as much as usual. I've been checking in, but I'm really distractable recently -- hopefully not because of my advanced age. I'm happy to mark off another year with IRG!
