This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

They're commonly denoted as punishment, reward, rules, expertise, and identification. Saionji is punishment for obvious reasons. Touga is reward, since his primary means of exercising power over people is through approval/withdrawal of approval. Juri is the rules person, since she's all about judging people and ordering rank. Miki is expertise for obvious reasons, and Utena is identification, since she has the most in common with the "normal" people and she empathizes with pretty much everybody.
Generally speaking, punishment is judged to be alienating in all cases, while reward and lawgiving are sometimes alienating, and expertise and identification are judged to never be alienating. Which is why Miki never really falls from grace, and Utena is forgotten once she sacrifices herself to save Anthy, doing something that no one in the student body would ever do and losing her identification in the process.
