This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
You'd be surprised how many kids I went to school with were actually going by their middle names. Hell, I was surprised. Four of my friends from high school all went by a modification of their first name or they went by their middle names. And the teachers called them by that name the entire time. The only times you heard their first names were on the first day of school, whenever there was a substitute, and graduation.
When you look in a yearbook and you see the person you know as Lainey, but you don't see Lainey's name, it's confusing until you find out that Lainey is short for Elaine, and it's her middle name.

Changing your name can be a tricky business, while it might be appealing to choose an exotic sounding name or one from a favourite game or series, you might want to rethick changing your name to Sephiroth Starcrusher or Aphrodite Lovechild or something equally over the top.
As for me, I been considering new names for myself for years, moreso after 'the change' but I want a name that not too common and not too freaky.

Personally I would not recommend using over 3/4 of those boys names (and about 1/2 of the girl names) as you or the unfortunate child you name will most likely end up the target of ridicle and/or bullies.

I feel really sorry for the boy named Parn.
I wouldn't change my name to something Japanese, as much as I'd love to, because it would be really obvious that it isn't my birth name, and I'd probably regret it later on down the line. I'd like something pretty, not common, but not overly exotic either. Kate is just such a boring, common, cheerleader-esque name. I'm equally upset with my middle name, Alexandra. I don't think it's an ugly name, but it's too fancy sounding. It just seems... wrong following Kate. Were my name Katherine or something like that, it might sound okay. Katherine Alexandra... I think that sounds pretty nice. Though I've grown to resent most names in the Kate family simply because of how often people assume that my name is Katherine, Katie, Katilyn, Katarina (okay, I rarely ever get Katarina, but I think that's a pretty name and I like to pretend people are calling me that.), and the like. Look at my birth records. My name is Kate, it's not short for anything else.

A name is so much more than a monkier, so often its meaning or etemology affects or curses its wearer. I'm not talking about idiotic spoonerism like the one Brad and Angelina bestowed on daughter Shilo Pitt* or the life destroying example of Drew Peacock.
My name is a derivative of the hebrew form of Jesus, thanks Dad way to give your son a Messiah Complex.
I recently was introduced to a character who after parting with his worldly belongings wanders the street spreading the gospel . His name: John Christopher, thats both a Disciple and the Patron Saint of travellers, did the guy really have any choice? Where does this leave Moon-Unit Zappa?
It's no surprise to me that many people prefer their second name, its like a backup incase the first turns out to be inappropriate. For me though it's my middle name which I would like to change. Lip service to my uncle, I'm named after him, I would far prefer to be named after my grandfather who is my hero.

Have you checked out baby name sites like this one or maybe this site?
They give you a huge list of names as well as their meanings and country of origin.

The name Marianne makes me sound old. I'll kill my nephew when he learns how to talk, because that means he'll start calling me, "Aunt Marianne." Plus, it always makes me think of that 50's style restaurant called Mary-Ann's with the scary looking woman as a mascot.
For me, my opinion on the name is generally not based on how the name sounds, but what it makes me think of. Think of it this way... When you hear a word, like "water," you think of water, right? When I hear a name, there's usually something that I relate the name to. I like the name Laura, because it was the name of a character I had that used to represent myself. When I think of that name, I think of that character. Another example would be the name Kate. If I had my own language, Kate would mean, "Lesbian." When I think of my last name, I think of a bear on an old children's show.
I'd love to change my last name. My mother's maiden name is much better, but I feel as though changing it to that, or my last name in general would make it seem as though I'm abandoning all relation with my father.

I don't see the problem with people changing their name to something that feels more.. right. However, I would also advise people not to pick names that are too eccentric, and to think carefully about how others would react to the name.. not because it matters what they think, but because they'll be the ones calling you by your name.. or nickname.. and they might think of some rather odd stuff you didn't think of for nicknames.
And as the faeries say, a name has power.
As for me, I'm quite content with my given name, actually.. thankfully. I like the name Bonnie because I think it sounds pretty and somewhat unique (at least, I've only met a few Bonnie's.) but not too over the top or too common. My middle name is Maye and my last name is May because my dad is weird, so the combination Bonnie Maye May.. is.. really weird. I used to hate the double May, but now it just amuses me, so I guess I don't mind. (Although, I got teased about it a lot in school.. people were usually just so amused by it that they called me by my full name, and I HATE that. Or "Bonnie May". It sounds so southern if I'm called that all the time. Just "Bonnie" is fine.)

I've always wanted to change my last name. It's long and unmanageable, and it makes a bad pornstar joke. I'd rather have it be something like 'Winter', which is close enough to be an anglicization (despite the completely different meaning) and references my birthday, which is in the coldest part of winter.

I got a nice, easy way to change your name, baby.

Alright, I can understand how someone could mispronouce my second first name, so I'll use Alexandra Rynae Victoria Jardon. Hmm...not feeling Victoria as much as I used to.
Time for more names to hijack...er..suggest..I'm currently looking at some names from the 2nd Golden Age of Immigration 1900s-1930s for suggestions myself.

I've never been overly fond of my name, but I don't think I'd change it unless I was using a pseudonym. That said, I like wasp-y ones. The one I use most commonly is a variation on "Sam White." I like androgynous names.
I did at one point want to change it to Aneri, but I don't think I like that name enough anymore.

What about Apple? If that's ever a good name, I'll change my name to Banana.
And Ali, if you have kids they can always take your name. So there.

As far as naming is concerned, I, for some reason, barely get along with anyone who starts out with the letter V. I used to think Victoria is a beautiful name, but... *sigh* ugly things happen between me and a person of that very name. Also made archenemy with a guy named Vickram since Middle School.
Hmm... *looks up Numerology for clues*

Then I would change my name to Orange.
I like my real name, Judy, I actually chose it myself when I was about twelve. But I did not add it to my identification document, yet I go by this name for years, everywhere.
I chose this name because my real name (the Chinese one) causes endless confusion and mess in both written and pronounciation terms. I don't really blame them, but this disturbs me a lot, still. (Even my husband can't remember my full Chinese name! ) Then I chose myself something a bit common and easy to remember. It might not be cool, yet so far I have only known one other Judy.
Perhaps someday I might want to change my name, but certainly not now. I hate to go through all the trouble to identify myself as the same person when changing my name.

Your husband at least should try to remember. Jeesh.

I can't stand my first name, to the point where I don't even like saying it on the internet. I don't like the circumstances around my naming. My mom was pretty much dead set on Ivy for the first eight months of her pregnancy and my grandmother bitches about it to the point where my mom just yanked it out of a baby name book. It's also one of the most popular girls' names of the 80s, as well as the name of a certain popstar. This combination of things kind of makes me want to cringe every time I hear it. I love my middle name (Rose) and it's pretty much impossible to say my name in real life without me saying, "OH CALL ME ROSE" to you and that makes me feel like a gigantic jerk for asking such a stupid thing from a teacher that has to handle gradebooks and the like.
You know, I half-bet your name and mine are the same. My mother thought it was such a lovely name, and one that hadn't been used much.
Yeah. Then 'Jessica' turned into the top name of the 80's....
For the longest time, I've wanted to change my name. Everybody and their neighbor was/knew a Jessica, and I was not a very commonplace person. My parents also stuck heavily to no one ever shortening my name on me. I've been Jessica my entire life, not Jessie or Jess. I tried shortening my name myself, but it never worked. I've mostly gotten over having such a commonplace name, but there still comes the day when I want to change my name to my internet alias you see before you.
I adore my middle name, Anne, despite the fact that people always ask if it's pronounced 'Annie'. I generally stare at them and ask 'Was Anne Frank ever pronounced Annie Frank?' and that would shut them up.
Still, if I ever have children, their names will be more unique. I only remember the boy's name right now, and that's Alistair.

That sounds like issues I had with my name, although the responses/questions I got were even more idiotic. For example, one person asked me, "What is your middle name?" I responded that it was Anne. He stared at me for a moment then said, "So your name is Ruth Anne Anne [maiden name]?"
....why must people be so dumb.

I think it's genetic, and the only reason we aren't as stupid is from constant application of SKU.
Seriously though, that sucks. UGH.

I wish. I doubt I'd dislike my name if it didn't represent what it did for me. It's was an incredibly trendy name around the time and it seems to conjure up images of flighty cheerleaders and big breasted popstars.
Izzat a big enough hint yet? D: On that note, I've known a lot of Jessicas in my day and most of them have been waify, artistic, and bicurious... so it's not a name I have a problem with.

My guess was originally Tiffany, although I'm supposing Britney is another decent chance.
As much as I hate my name, at least no one else in my school had it. But everyone's grandmother's name was Ruth. >_< Including my own!
