This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Hello! I recently tried to set up the game and everything works but the translation. I followed all of the instructions and I'm not sure what I did wrong.
I'm not sure what went wrong either, and can't really tell you anything that's not in the directions. I'll send you a link to the pre-patched versions of the files, though. Hopefully they'll work fine!

Hey, I need help with setting up the game!
So, I did everything in the instructions but got stuck at the translation part.
First off, I cant do the extra step. When pressing right on my mouse on translate.bat there is no option of edit I can choose.
Second off, I cant use translate.bat at all. The files are at the directory but when I double pressed the required button a message where it says "'utena' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." There are some explanations to this:
-I accidentally compressed the first disc of the game to rar, so I downloaded that file again.
-I use WinRar but only the evaluation copy of it.
-I downloaded I long time ago WinDS and the apps logo appears on the file.
I can run the game just fine on Yabause, but only in Japanese. Please help.
EDIT: Ok so I got it to translate. I still cant do the extra step, but thats fine. SFF is not working for me, and while Yabause is working, it has horrible audio and quality. How do I use SFF? I have the ver 0.12 beta R4, And I use the instructions but it just shows me ????.

So, I got the game to work and finished it and I... [Died? Like not only did Touga fail to save me, and he failed because of Miki of all people, but I also got killed because of him. And it said game over. WTF? Not to mention I think utena lost hard to chigu. Well at least it was a very intresting story, and the game has more effort in it then american cash grab show game, so thats nice]. But seriously, how do I become a duelist?

I have to say, the first time that [Chigusa shows up to slash your heart's nobility points]. I nearly peed myself.
Well, more like every time. And it's even scarier when [You prevent her from doing so].

It's good for knowing the choice results, but be warned, it does have some inaccurate info. For example, you don't need to have beaten the other endings to get Anthy's, and I don't believe the requirements for the Akio ending are quite accurate. My suspicion is that Utena at 0% is all you need. It also doesn't explain how many choices you get in sequences such as After School on the 23rd.
Itavin: to become a Duelist, you need to get the Black Rose, Akio, or, uh, technically the Anthy ending. To finish the plot you'll want to go for a character or Perfect ending, though.

Yeah, but romance bores me. I did get the anthy and akio endings, but I just cant figure out the black rose one... oh well, better try and get in tougas pants next time! ( PS I am betting he and the player are secretly brother and sister)

For the Black Rose ending, you just need to have all the StuCo members fall. So spam +Chigusa choices.
The Perfect ending is the plot without romance choice.
Glad you're enjoying!

I wanted to chime in because I've been playing the translation extensively over the last couple months:
SSF is really bad and hasn't been updated in years. Please don't use it, it's kind of a garbage emulator.
Bizhawk is a much better emulator (it's a multi-system emulator that supports mednafen cores, so it supports Sega Saturn), it's much easier to configure, works on modern systems, and doesn't have any of the bad graphical issues, crashes, or screen tearing I got with SSF.
You can download it here: http://tasvideos.org/BizHawk/ReleaseHistory.html
This might have some issues on older, less powerful computers, but the Utena game doesn't have any 3D in it so it should be less resource intensive than most other Saturn games so you'll probably be fine.
Two notes though:
1. Bizhawk doesn't support reading ISOs directly (it needs .bin and .cue files), but there's a program included with it (DiscoHawk) that will convert an ISO to the correct format to load with the game. It was fairly straightforward to do.
2. You will need a JPN Sega Saturn bios file. SSF can do without it for Utena but Bizhawk needs it.
And yeah, the one existing Utena FAQ has a bunch of inaccuracies, notably [basically everything involving the date with Miki on the 24th (since you skip the town scenes in favor it it) and the massive TEN NOBILITY POINTS you get with him after the conclusion of it.] I flipped when I saw that oh my god.

Hello!
First, I want to express my belated gratitude to people who translated the game, I was really happy to finally play it AND understand what the heck is happening on the screen You're awesome
Secondly, I wanted to ask the translators - is it ok if our team will make Russian translation based on your English one, with all proper credits, of course? We probably won't find available translators from Japanese for such a large amount of text

I would think that code page / encoding for Cyrillic would be problematic.

Well, there is a workaround for Cyrillic - redrawing font files and accordingly replacing characters in the translated text. A bit messy, but it works
Upd. Oh, sorry, I just realized I should have been more specific "
We're mainly translators, not coders, so we'd like to ask for permission to use both the patching program and the translated text.

You certainly have my permission, though I am chagrined that any poor translation choices on my part are going to be passed along and exacerbated. Not to speak for Ayu Ohseki, but I imagine she'd be fine with it, too. It's not as if we got permission from the scenario writers before translating it ourselves!
As for Endless, I know that he left documentation in the translation program because he wanted to make it convenient and accessible for people to use in the future. I would go ahead. You can try to contact him if you have any questions!

Thank you very much! We'll start working on our translation then

After encountering serveral issues with setting up I finally managed to make the game work with EmuHawk. Still, I noticed from the start that the audio "stutters" a lot (English isn't my native language and I wasn't sure what term to use here but I hope you get what I mean).
I was wondering if this was simply a result of console limitations at the time and this is the case for everyone or if there might be something wrong with the software configurations/my PC. I would be really grateful if someone could help me out with this.

Well, I can tell you that the audio does not stutter for everyone. It is definitely specific to your setup.
I can't help you beyond that, though - Sega Saturn emulation is very finicky and difficult compared to many other consoles. I remember being completely unable to get it to work on an old computer, and then it working fine when I got a new computer, for reasons I never understood. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, my current PC has some pretty bad specs but after trying it on another one with better parts it seemed to work. I'm very glad to be able to play this now. If I ever manage to learn Japanese I'd love to buy a physical copy of the game.

I love the game so far, it truly feels like it's own episode of the show and the amount of choices/different outcomes suprised me since VNs tend to not have that much interactivity (at least speaking out of personal experience with them).
Still, I'm sadly at a loss of what to do when you reach the part where you need to change "discs". When I reached that point the game stated that I had to close the emulator and mount the second ISO. I did so but it still states the same thing when opening the game. I tried doing the same thing but with the first ISO but got no results.
I would appreciate any help with this since I can't continue playing this wonderful game now.
Edit: As I understand it, mounting the ISO is just opening it in the emulator right? Or am I supposed to unpack it with a program like 7Zip? I did both and neither worked.

Hi, I just did this yesterday in SSF. I did not close down the emulator; I dismounted the first disk using Virtual Clone Drive, then mounted the second, then in SSF selected "open disk tray/eject disk" and then "close disk tray," and it just went through.

I sadly was not able to get SSF to work and instead use Bizhawk to play the game, forgot to mention that. You wouldn't happen to know how to make it work using that emulator by any chance?
Edit: I would still very much appreciate it if someone were to help me with this as I sadly cannot continue playing the game.
Edit^2: If anyone could still help me with this, I would very much appreciate it. Still haven't played the second half of the game yet.

Hmm, none of the download links work! Sad to see that. Is it available elsewhere? BTW, thanks for all the effort put in, I'm sure it's great.

Sorry for the late response. I feel you - Sega Saturn emulation is a real pain. But I know nothing about it. I myself have only ever used SSF, and I'm not sure how I got that to work, either. I hope you can get it working!

I imagine the webmistresses will get it hosted at some point, but for now I've sent you a private message about it.

Badda-bing badda-boom, I have 100% completed the entire game. Why? To make a new and improved walkthrough, of course! Y'know, 'cause the one on gamefaqs is inaccurate? It was pretty fun. Anyway, the walkthrough linked will contain links to everything you'll need to run the game, an explanation of the options, controls, and nobility point mechanics, and, of course, a thorough guide for all ten endings of the game! Apologies if it's difficult to read. If you have any questions, please say something.
