Kate McGarrigle, Canadian folk singer, died last Monday at 63. Those of us who aren't Canadian know her as Rufus and Martha Wainwright's mother.

Jean Simmons, British actress, died last Friday at 80 years old. Most of us would know her as Grandma Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle, but fans of pre-1960's cinema would recognize a lot of her work.

Zelda Rubenstein, who everybody and their mama should know as the short psychic lady from all three Poltergeist movies, died yesterday at the age of 76.

Corey Haim was pronounced dead today; he was 38. At this time, the cause of death is still a toss-up between illness and an overdose, but many are understandably leaning toward the latter, as he had been struggling with drug addiction for years. You probably remember him as half of the infamous "Corey duo", along with Corey Feldman; however, that's not a terribly flattering memory, so I propose we just watch The Lost Boys and reminisce on what could have been.

I heard abut that this morning and thought, "What a shame, I loved him in The Goonies."  Then I realized that was the other Cory, and felt incredibly guilty.

The irony of fate; they were going to an annual memorial to all the Poles killed by Stalin's purges that were aimed to destroy their political and military elite. And now the country's political and military elite die because of that, decades later. Dictators can apparently even kill from beyond the grave.

Carl Macek, creator of Robotech, and really, founder of the anime industry as we know it, died of a heart attack on Saturday. He was incredibly instrumental in bringing anime to America, despite the negative way people see his adaptations.

Lena Horne died today at the age of 92.

And in case you missed it, Dixie Carter(aka Julia Sugarbaker)died on April 19 at age 70.

If I felt like the focus of our best scientists was going to more places where there immediate attention was necessary (the redefinition of "air and space" as including the ozone layer whatnot), I would be okay with the space program being put on the back burner. But it seems more like straight budget cuts to me. So poo.
