This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

However, reading discussions on the stigma that Japanese men face after they take their wives' names suggest to me that Akio is resentful as fuck about the power Mrs Ohtori has over him. Being a prick of truly epic proportions, he takes it out on poor Kanae.

Ep14
Kanae (flaunts how her family benefits Akio, in front of Utena and Anthy): And it's been rumored that he was adopted into my family just for this equipment.

EP30
Akio: Some breakfast?
Kanae: No thanks.
Kanae (wielding mother in law power card, in front of Utena and Anthy): Besides, my mother's here.
So yes, the girl has (unwittingly) done her own share of things to incur Akio's wrath. However, judging by Akio's "schemer/planner" character in SKU, I don't think he would "apple" Kanae simply out of spite alone (though spite could be a part of it). To continue on being the Acting Chairman, Akio would likely need Kanae to at least stay alive for the engagement to be uphold, so he can keep on being the Acting Chairman. I think Akio's "destruction" of Kanae's would mean either
a) to render her in a similar state to Mr. Ohtori: alive, but sick enough to be kept "behind the scenes" so she and her father would have null chance to interfere with what Akio plans for the Academy/Ohtori Clan
b) to make her a replacement Rose Bride ala Anthy V 2.0
c) both

Agreed.

Hmm, I always got the impression she was kind of jealous (of the projector, yes). "Lol, that Akio, so obsessed with that thing (why aren't you paying more attention to me dammit?!)."

Agreed. While having cultured mannerism due to her "class", Kanae strikes me as a clingy, insecure girl - and Akio's man whore vibes did not make it easy for her. She will likely react hostilely to people and things that she sees as hogging her "Akio-time".

It strikes me that soul swords may be the only real 'magic' in the show. Everything else is probably the projector.
