This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
A board full of anime fans has to understand the appeal of them, so talk about your love for them here. Mine are Monty Python and The Holy Grail and The Princess Bride. Killer rabbit for the effing win!

Donnie Darko. The creepy bunny scenes should be shown to those, who claim, that they like bunnies

I hate every movie posted so far.
Well, I actually haven't seen The Princess Bride and I absolutely adored Holy Grail about fifteen years ago, but both movies are unwatchable now having to have endured over ten years of disgusting slobs quoting them to or around me incessantly like I'm supposed to join in and dance like a seal with them. Thank Christ this behavior is limited to campy movies that I can dismiss (even if I liked them originally). If I had to endure this with movies like The Godfather, Goodfellas or Heat, I'd become violent.
Donnie Darko was a really bad fanfic somebody unfortunately had enough money to put on film.
Ugh, sorry for the rant, sore subject for me (mostly based on the ruining of Holy Grail for me).

OMG I'm glad you started this thread.
I love Cult films. If it's trashy, I'll probably watch it. But some of my favorites are:
Rocky Horror Picture Show *and* Shock Treatment
I started going so much that I eventually joined the cast. Another shameless promotion plug: Come see us if you're in the Southern Cali area. I play "Trixie" and would love to see some fellow IRGers at our shows.
My favorite call out line, I have to keep it generally safe "The road was long but I ran it (BACKWARDS!) ...and I love Brad. I know lame right, but he's my favorite character.
Any John waters film. But my favorite is Serial Mom and Hairspray.
Blue Velvet
("Candy Colored Sandman.")
Showgirls
"I'm not a whore! I'm a dancer!"
Office Space
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
Clueless
Clue
American Psycho
Welcome to the Dollhouse
Vanishing Point
Crash (with James Spader)
...so many that I probably forgot but those are on my definitive list.

I adore many flicks considered to be cult films, but it's such a difficult definition to pin down, isn't it? Amphigory-y and self-reflexive. I mean the entire bodies of work of David Lynch, Walter Hill, Alejandro Jodorowsky or even Tony Scott are given cult cred. Can everything you've done, over a lifetime of wide-release be "cult", then?
Disney's Sky High apparently warrants.
Dawn of the Dead's a goody nobody's namechecked in the thread, yet. And, Cat People and its sequel. Six String Samurai. Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. The adaptation of Kafka's The Trial Welles' did with Tony Perkins at his sexiest.

Indeed it does, I love that movie.
I also like The Color Purple, which lines from that movie if repeated, can make people laugh despite the fact that it is supposed to be serious.

Hmmm some of mine that may or may not be considered cult favorites, depending who you ask:
A Christmas Story
The Dark Crystal
Edward Scissorhands
Escape to Witch Mountain (and its sequel, Return From Witch Mountain)
The Goonies
Labyrinth
Mirrormask
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Moulin Rouge
The Princess Bride
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Spaceballs
Tron
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
...wow, that's more than I thought I'd have, actually.

I know exactly what you mean. I still remember the guy who went on Oprah and recited Sophia's entire "You told Harpo to beat me" speech.
Everyone has pretty much named every movie that popped in my head. (OMG! Someone's seen Beyond the Valley of the Dolls besides me!)
There's also Death Race 2000. It's hard not to love a movie involving Sylvester Stallone, David Carradine, and a cross country race where people get run over for points.
But I'm a Cheerleader-- RuPaul out of drag, and Natasha Lyonne. What more do you need?
Party Monster-- Seth Green and Macaulay Culkin as THE Club Kids.(One of them was James St. James, but I forget.)
Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar-- Patrick Swayze was an awesome woman.

Actually I definitely want to get Party Monster and To Wong Foo, on blu-ray whenever it comes out.
Oh and I know it may not technically count as a film, but I love that short film Captain EO, with Michael Jackson. It was so crazy.
If you like musicals on realistic stuff, check out Sarafina!

I'm wondering if the original Stargate movie counts.
Kurt Russell's O'Neill > Macguyver O'Neil. In before rage.
I'll second Office Space, as well.
Blade Runner for sure. I cyberpunk.
Can't think of much offhand, so I suppose I should get back to you guys.
And I actually really liked Donnie Darko.

OK, Holy Mountain is more of a cult film in the conventional sense of the word cult maybe. Or something, I lost my mind about halfway through. Fuuuuuuuck.
Personally, I think I have to go with The Big Lebowski. If it's got a con, it's a cult classic.
Offline
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
eXistenZ
Shaolin Soccer
Reform School Girls (because Wendy O Williams ROCKS)
Falling Down

"Can't Hardly Wait" - a classic for me, much better than the later "American Pie". And actually all the early movies themed around graduation parties

How could I forget Hedwig and Too Wong Foo... and Party Monster
Raven I recently saw it on Turner's Classic Movies and I had to watch it because everyone kept telling me "Oh you'll really like this movie--it's your thing." And I did So yay I'm glad that someone else loves it too!

Rocky Horror Picture Show. Most popular cult film ever. Had to mention it for a web buddy of mine.
Does The Craft count?
...Death Race 2000 was fricking awesome.
Also: My Name is Nobody.

HOLY SHIT THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES EVER.
Also, some critics say that Repo! The Genetic Opera is on the path to become a cult classic, and I quite agree. (I just adored that movie to pieces. I have the DVD now, too.)

Holy crap, I forgot about The Big Lebowski! That was a classic. "Donny, you're out of your element!"

Yes, Anthiena, The Craft definitely counts. Neve Campbell and Fairuza Balk and the creepy scene with all the sea creatures. Great 90s angst.

......man where were you when I brought up eXistenZ in the movie thread?? Anyway yes, its awesome. I recommend it to anyone who likes weird mind-messing films, and also anyone who likes video games.
And for my contribution:
Pi
Fight Club
Sin City
Moulin Rouge (does that count???)

Oh good. Yes I see it on your list now. I think my favorite song has to be the Madonna one.

Manos: The Hands of Fate. It's the best movie to make fun of ever. And god, is it horrible. Thus making it the true cult experience.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Words cannot express just how much I love this movie.
Eraserhead. It's basically my version of mental porn.
The Craft. Good naughty twisted fun, and Fairuza Balk makes me overflow with joy. If I were a photographer, I'd capture every angle of her face with such fervent devotion. She's so intriguing.
Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter. Because Jesus and hot lesbian vampires are an awesome combination.
Dogma. Because God and Kevin Smith is an awesome combination.
