This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Utena/Anthy/Akio fanart (Step 1)

Normally, I'll spend hours cleaning up a drawing, coloring it, and then posting it, and then someone will say "This is completely off"
And then I'll spend more hours and fustraition trying to fix it.  So, this time, I'm going to ask for advice before hand!
good idea?

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f29/I … tenaII.jpg
Please tell me what you think, if I need to fix some stuff, or if I should move on to the next step.

Re: Utena/Anthy/Akio fanart (Step 1)

It's a bit dark, which is a problem I have sometimes myself and it can affect the colouring, but it's not by any stretch of the imagination bad.

I can tell already you have a lot of talent. How are you doing the colouring? If I were you I'd try my hand at doing it in photoshop before giving in to the urge to break out the coloured pencils. It might turn out cleaner that way. I haven't seen any of your other art, so this is a general all-purpose comment. Worry more about perfecting your own art style than trying to conform to someone else's. Most of my worst drawings I've done were fan art that I tried really hard to make look like official character art. It'll be great as long as you're comfortable with it. ;D

Re: Utena/Anthy/Akio fanart (Step 1)

To tell the truth, Revolutionary Girl Utena's style is a good deal like mine, so it looking like the origional style was on complete accident.  I do all of my coloring on photoshop, I haven't used colored pencils in ages *L*  The poor things are probably dying of neglect.  They need hugs...
Thanks for your comment, since you think it looks right proportionally, I'll clean it up and make it less dark.

Re: Utena/Anthy/Akio fanart (Step 1)

Yeah, it seems like you thought of all the problems in there. I just noticed a little chin muddle going on there (which tends to happen when I re-draw the chin 89 times to fit with anime style. Demot-smile

But yeah. It all seems in proportion so let us see it when you're done.!

Re: Utena/Anthy/Akio fanart (Step 1)

I suggest making the initial sketches with HB or something along the lines, using a softer pencil can get quite messy and hard to clean up in the end.

For the lazy people like me: mechanical pencils! etc-love  etc-love etc-love
And kneadable eraser is the best invention!  I'd ruin half of my drawings without it.

Anyway, generally I think it looks alright so go on, finish it!

I second the use of mechanical pencils. I find it hard to go back to anything else. etc-love

Re: Utena/Anthy/Akio fanart (Step 1)

I third the mechanical pencil thing. Real pencils are for drawings that require pencil shading, and I love them, but for anime or manga style? Got to go mechanical.

As for the picture, it's incredibly hot. It's a little strange to see Anthy with her hair down but I suppose given the context it's appropriate. Colored it will be much better, since in the black and white Utena's and Anthy's hair look very similar.

I can see that you might be a big fan of the gothic manga judging by the style of drawing you have done. emot-keke

I especially love the costumes you drew up.

Re: Utena/Anthy/Akio fanart (Step 1)

Actually, I don't really know many gothic manga's I've enjoyed, but suggestions would be good.
Most of hte ones I've tried, the plot seemed a bit... whiny.

Thanks for your comments!  I kinda wanted Utena's outfit to be like an Evil Utena concept

That is an intriguing costume for Utena. Maybe we could see it in another picture, one where Akio isn't so rudely blocking our view of half of it. emot-wink

Some of the gothic titles I flicked through did seem to have that whiny quality you mentioned... as for titles, the only gothic one I have as such is a manga called The Wallflower (Yamatonadeshiko Shichihenge which translates as Perfect Girl Evolution).

Its about these excessively handsome guys who in exchange for free rent at this fancy place, have to try and change a girl called Sunako who has developed an obsession with darkness and a morbid fascination with blood, horror movies, and similarly dark things, from being the scariest girl alive into a lady.  the girl in question hates excessive light exposure and for most part, she is portrayed in Super-Deformed form except for key scenes where she is drawn in all her dark glory.

The artwork on the 4 guys is pretty good and if you like glamourous Japanese guys who tend to dress in gothic bondage gear and sometimes you see Sunako and her friend Noi dressed up the same way, its the manga for you.

Re: Utena/Anthy/Akio fanart (Step 1)

Mmmmmm. And mmm.
I actually like your Akio & Anthy better than Utena - they look more like themselves to me, and in possible character.

Maybe it's cos I've never seen Utena wear this kinda corset.
Yet she looks hot in it. emot-redface

I'm back to mmming. I do think it's drawn well. poptart Not to mention a delicious scenario.
Moar of these 3 together I beseech thee, in both sensual and non-sensual poses. school-eng101 They share/create such a delicous/twisted dynamic...

Re: Utena/Anthy/Akio fanart (Step 1)

Wow, another one of my really old threads resurrected.

Tamago, I did end up reading that manga.  I really love it, especially the main character, although the anime seemed to hold less charm to me.

Sharii, thankyou so much!  I wanted Akio and Anthy to look like themselves, but Utena as if she'd fully fallen to Akio's temptation.  Although from my current point of view on the series, Anthy would probably glaring at her in that scenario.  >w>
I haven't done Utena art in so long, I should!
