Re: Name Name what's in a name your own or one in SKU explained

My name means "lamb of God"...and I've never bothered to check my middle name, Lee. But fuse both of those super common names together and you get: A BIGGER COMMON NAME!  Can't even come up with any cool nicknames that rhyme so, kids had to be really creative to pick on me at school.

Take into account that my last name is one of the most common of all, Jones. Some turn that into, Jonsey! emot-keke

I always wanted the name "ARIEL" ....yeah.

My first name - Alyson - is of German origin and means Truth, Noble.

Middle name - Michelle - French origin meaning Who is God?

Last name - Martz - Also German, but I suck and can't remember what it means.

Re: Name Name what's in a name your own or one in SKU explained

emot-aaaemot-aaaemot-aaa HOLY SHIT. emot-aaaemot-aaaemot-aaa

Okay, so I've spent years thinking my name was just a made-up word because I couldn't find any sort of meaning for it at all except for one possible derivation that really didn't seem right to me. Then this thread inspires me to take another look, and BAM I find my name is much cooler than I ever thought it was!

I'll break it down first. It's apparently a big dispute as to where it actually came from and what it means-- actually, all three of my names are, so basically I take this as permission to mix and match the way I want.

'Allahu Nuri' - 'God is my light'.

'ele' - 'light'.

'eleos' - 'pity'.

'alia/alius' - 'the other', OR 'the foreign', OR 'from a foreign land'.

'Aenor' - feminine form of Einar, which is derived from Ein Herr, which means 'notable warrior', OR a feminine form of Eino, which means 'awe'.

Marie - derived from Mary, which has the possible meanings of 'sea of bitterness', OR 'rebelliousness', OR 'wished for child', but the strongest possibility is mr/mry, which means 'love/beloved'.

And my last name means either 'basket-maker', 'vat-maker', 'tub-maker', 'fanning-wheel maker', OR 'winnowing fan maker'. Those kinda suck, but whatever. Good to know it's not meaningless.

I'm totally only putting down the meanings I like, there are way too many. If I switch around the meanings, it's only for grammatical purposes.

- God is my beloved light
- light and love
- pity and rebelliousness
- pity and love
- light and the sea of bitterness
- the notable foreign warrior, the wished-for child
- the beloved and notable warrior from a foreign land
- the rebellious and notable warrior from a foreign land

Is it just me, or does that name mostly sound like it belongs to Utena?

Also... here's a gorgeous song that many people have sung to me upon hearing my name, and information about the two women I was named for.

Lots of cool name meanings from everyone

Wow, surprizing amount of interesting names.

I've been going by my middle name for a while, which is Elspeth; which can either mean Concencreated to God, or priestess, depending weather you go by the catholic or origional celtic meaning.
My first name is Rebecca, which means Beloved

My last name meaning:  Banker

So, my whole name means:
Beloved Priestess Banker

Re: Name Name what's in a name your own or one in SKU explained

Ugh. All of you with your fancy names. And here I sit with my bloody common name. *pouts* I'll share it anyway. I always have to look up my name, because I know there's 'grace' or 'wealth' somewhere in my name, but I can never remember where. So here's what I ended up looking up.

Jessica, from the Hebrew, means god beholds? That's.... not right. Ah. There's a translation I recognize more. Protected by god. It's still not what I remember, but I'll look up my middle to see if that's the one that has the other meaning.

My middle name, Anne. At least with a less common spelling. But for the love of all that is holy, call my middle name 'Annie' and I will tear your head off. It's also from the Hebrew, meaning grace, favor.

Streeter, I've always assumed, means something about my ancestors having to deal with streets. *shrugs* I can't ever find anything about that. But, I know I'm a bit of a European mutt. Mostly German & Irish with smatterings of a lot of other northern Europe thrown in the mix. And I'm sure my grandma's connected us to old-blood royalty somewhere....

I've never liked my real name. It's far too common. At the time, my mom thought she was being unique, but she happened to tap into the collective unconscious and name her daughter Jessica, one of the most common names in the US for many a year now. For a while, I was tempted to change my name legally to my screen name, Chani, as that's got to be unique (points/cookies if you know where it's from) and I like it. But, Jessica and Chani really are two different people. I don't want to mix them up. Besides, I was given the name for a reason, I assume. *shrugs*

You know now that I think about I just think people want to hear me spell out sex. That would explain a lot.

OMFG Alithea, marry me now. etc-love No one ever knows that! *calms down* Here's your prize of cookies, shaped in sexy Utena-character shapes.

............. When I first saw the movie, I thought Lady Jess was a bit of a...... I don't even know. She was too out there. But I latched onto Chani's name and have kept it for mine ever since. And, having read the books (nearly all of them....), I'm rightfully glad I chose Chani's over anyone else's. Imagine my horror when I found out what happens to Alia (whose name is also awesome!) and the rest of the ladies. Sometimes, I wonder if any of his ladies come to a pleasant end..... emot-gonk

If I had to pronounce your name, it would either be rather phonetically, or like 'aleetheah'. Which, I guess, properly spelled would be more like Alethia. Which also rings bells of books I've read and loved.....

It doesn't help when people have funky spellings themself, though. I went to a school with a girl named Khrystuhl (dead serious), and we just got a new manager named Rhian -pronounced like Ryan.

Although nothing compares to the poor, poor man in this world whose first name is Pornsak. And chose to stay here, where we have a small shrine to thins like that.

You watch yourself, or you'll sign in one day, and find that your title has been changed to something like "All of Canadia's Bitch" or "I Screw Movie-Akio."

The latter, I feel, is infinitely more shaming.

Re: Name Name what's in a name your own or one in SKU explained

It's not the accent that does that, and I know that. Forgive any aspersions cast, but it's the hick thing. The less educated and more rural a person is, the more likely they are to say 'Elner'. It goes for Americans too.

The Canada accent isn't as strong as you think either. Most of the people I hear every day are only a couple of dipthongs away from talking exactly like Americans. And me, well... an American friend of mine told me I was a bargain bin Canadian because I didn't say 'aboot' and I didn't say 'eh'. Not to mention I pick up accents fast. Like creepy fast. I talk to Americans on the phone all day, that's my job, so the moment I hear an American accent I'm speaking in an American accent. I shudder to think what will happen if I ever spend any time in Europe.
