This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

In which I invite a healthy dose of literary criticism

First, I'll talk about one of the concepts that interest me the most.

The villains will operate a massive prison colony in space. The colony is a giant cylinder, and all over that cylinder there is a honeycomb-like grid of cells fenced in with smooth, 200-foot-tall walls clear super-plastic walls. The prisoners are randomly allocated to one of those cells. In each of those cells is a reinforcement schedule. What this means is that every prisoner is rewarded for certain actions. If two adjacent cells are given the same reinforcement schedule, then the door between the cells is opened. If the reinforcement schedules are different, the door is never opened.

The most common reinforcement schedule is one in which every prisoner has a 3-acre hexagonal cell on which to live and to farm. Each prisoner is given a stun gun with which to protect himself. If the prisoner generates sufficient output, then he/she will be allowed to recharge his/her stun gun at recharge stations put at the corners of each farm plot. If he/she does not, the recharge stations will stop working. This schedule is common because it causes prisoners to be very docile and hardworking.

Something that's commonly said in this prison is that many of the pressures of modern society are not present. They don't have to look for jobs or worry about losing their status or anything. It's basically a parody of industrial society.

The main villain is a 7 year old boy with implants that have been in his system since he was an embryo. These implants increase his rate of healing, increase his strength and intelligence, make him immortal, and just all around make him better. His name is C41+, after the classic sci-fi character Ralph 124C 41+. His basic goal is to cleanse Earth's surface, which has at this point become one giant China. He believes that humanity needs a home to go back to in case it fails to colonize space, so in order to preserve the "mothership," he wants to destroy Earth's techno-industrial system and allow the biosphere to recover in 25 years instead of the 400 years it would take if things are left to run their course and behave as they do in his models.

He doesn't think much of killing non-immortal humans, because he feels that without his help, they will all die anyway, and as such, the value of their lives can only be measured in terms of how they can contribute to the future.

The real purpose of elections is to make the people hate each other more than they hate their government.
