This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Animation fails...

As fans of Utena, this post may be wrong...but I found it funny... I found several fails in the anime, for instance.

Episode 10 - Nanami's duel
http://ohtori.nu/galerie/d/4640-2/Series_ep10_141.jpg

If you check this episode... yes, Utena has the sword of Dios in her hand (17:05) but Anthy has not pulled it out yet (17:18) emot-aaa

Episode 28- Ruka's Duel
http://ohtori.nu/galerie/d/11824-1/Series_ep28_186.jpg

Someone did his job wrong with these cars.

And you? Have you noticed something wrong?

Re: Animation fails...

Hahaha, I can't believe I never noticed either of those! emot-rofl I checked and the second one was fixed in the remastered version, but I can't believe they didn't fix the sword thing as well.

One animation error that always bothered me was how Anthy's glasses disappear for a moment during the sequences where she pulls out the sword from Utena.

One second...

And the next...

Re: Animation fails...

Found another one by coincidence while rewatching episode 26.

Leaning against a chair, Touga?
http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/3019/chairz.jpg

Screw that! Touga needs no chair to lean against! He can lean against the very air itself!
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8062/nochair.jpg

And the animation was so nice this episode, and yet such an obvious mistake was made... shame on you, animators!

Somehow the only things that come to mind are variations on "Your argument is invalid X is Y" and Touga is fucking awesomesauce.

Just imagine that the cars were due to Akio's projector failing. emot-tongue

Re: Animation fails...

All of Utena comes to us via Akio's projector.  We only believe what he wants us to believe.

The only one I've caught before is Anthy's glasses, but I assumed there was a reason for it.  Now I'm suspicious.

Re: Animation fails...

We've observed before, elsewhere, that Utena changes promiscuously from a righty to a lefty depending on whether her fight footage was flipped during production.  Either that or she is Inigo Montoya in disguise.  school-sherlock

http://ohtori.nu/galerie/d/7242-1/Series_ep17_167.jpg
Shiori is a rookie whom Utena can fight with her off hand...

http://ohtori.nu/galerie/d/9648-1/Series_ep23_180.jpg
But when it comes to Mikage, I am not left-handed!

Well.. now that I'm looking at it, I think this is not a fail,  but it is related to Nemuro acting as a computer. (Scientific guy -photo 1- / Normal guy -photo 2-)

Re: Animation fails...

Does anyone have screenshots of episode 36? I clearly remember how the Sword of Dios turns into a featureless sabre when Utena slices through the oncoming cars, but my old DVDs are buried somewhere, probably at my parents' place...

Akio, you have nice turns of phrase, but your points aren't clear and you have no textual support. I can't give this a passing grade.

Yep, that's it. For some reason I couldn't find it from the gallery. I'm a huge sword geek, so it instantly burned itself in my mind.

Re: Animation fails...

Here's one I know is in the remastered footage. During the staircase stock-footage from the first two arcs. When Anthy is making Utena's clothes appear. The part where she raises her hands to make her skirt appear. Her fingers are missing for a single frame.

Can somebody find it and post it?

I have the remastered version and I checked episode 7, but I saw no such error. Her fingers were there all the time.

It looks more like badly done foreshortening to me, actually.

I think that's the technical artsy term anyway...

THANK YOU.

You'd think they would fix it in the remasters.

Re: Animation fails...

Here's a small thing that, while it's not really an error, grabbed my attention.

Anthy attempts to throw herself off the roof head first. Utena grabs hold of her arm.
http://i51.tinypic.com/143grxu.jpg

And the very next moment, Anthy is facing Utena.
http://i52.tinypic.com/fequdv.jpg

Now, technically she could have easily been spun around, but no such scene was shown. All of sudden she was just facing the other way, which seemed a bit odd.

No, she isn't. I also get tricked into thinking that too at first, but it's the same left arm.

It's just Anthy flopping about and being a dead weight.
