I was fooled too, but I have no excuse   Wakaba is pretty clear about her feelings.  I think I mostly assumed she wanted him because in every other anime in the world, when childhood friends are set up like this they end up getting together.  But Utena is not every other anime, and Wakaba doesn't have the moderate capacity for self-deceit required to love someone while believing she hates them.  Even with Saionji, she's conscious of both competing emotions.

I like Tatsuya, though I dislike his duplicity.  He's certainly presumptuous in believing that he's Wakaba's prince and that therefore this other guy must be a prick, but this is a sin of which only people with the capacity for devotion are guilty.  (And I certainly don't remember him calling Wakaba a slut.)  Above all, I like him for the reason he makes the elevator go up: he loves Wakaba.  He doesn't love-hate her, he doesn't obsess over her, he doesn't want to hurt her, he doesn't resent her; he loves her.  How many people in this show -- how many people in the world -- can say something similar?

Definitely not me. But I'm definitely going to watch that episode again because I did not notice that the elevator is going up... sometimes when things are moving too fast downward, they'd look like they're going up.
I'm just happy that he's still with her even at the end of the series, even though there's a possibility that he won't have a chance with her.

I think it's a bit oversensitive to say he calls her a slut or thinks of her that way, but the implication is there. It's one of those passive-aggressive nice guy things from that article I posted in IFD a while back about why nice guys don't get girlfriends. That's not to say Tatsuya exhibits this... that's just to say that some people would mean 'she's a slut' when they said those words.

This never even occurred to me the first time I saw this scene   You're right that he could mean that, and I think you're also right that he should be given the benefit of the doubt on this.  The translation also affects things.  I'm not a very good Japanese speaker, but I think the verb Tatsuya uses in "no matter how much of her purity she'll lose" is "kegareru," which I believe would be more accurately translated as "no matter how much she may be defiled" or "no matter how much of her purity is taken."  It seems to me that the slut connotation is less strong under this interpretation.

I really like the "official" translation.  The translators, writing for a mass audience, made the excellent stylistic choice of sacrificing word-for-word accuracy for more natural-sounding Gestalt dialogue.  The downside, of course, is that some of the nuances are lost, so you don't want to read too much into the choice of words.

And the choice of shot for Ruka was perfect. That expression of pity.

I may need to find an editing bay just to cut the movie up along to a dramatic reading of that speed-through.

And the new thumnail theatre's thumbnails... That's not a very happy thumbnail of Wakaba.  So sad.  So sad indeed.
