This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Name Check!: a word game

This game is a variation on one played at the last National Puzzlers' League convention, and I thought it might be fun to try here emot-smile  In this game, one player suggests a pair of initials -- for example, TU.  Other players look for a two-word proper noun that uses those initials.  The catch: you get more points if the initials appear later in the word, up to the fifth letter.  So for TU, Tenjou Utena is worth two points, but sTanley cUp is worth four, because the T and the U each appear in the second place in their words.

Here are some examples for the initials FR:

Fred Rogers: 2 points
the Fellowship of the Ring: 2 points (words like "the," "of," and "and" don't count)
Folsom pRison: 3 points (letters do not have to be in the same place in their words)
microsoFt woRd: 3 points (no points awarded for a letter beyond the fifth)
Florida eveRglades: 5 points
paciFic Rim: 6 points
caliFornia guRls: 8 points (my best score without tool assistance)
eifFel toweR: 9 points (you can pick the latest letter if it occurs more than once)
dwarF fortRess: 10 points (perfect score!)

Some non-scoring entries:

Flame waR: 0 points (this is not a proper noun)
dRaco malFoy: 0 points (you can't switch the order of the letters)
Fried gReen tomatoes: 0 points (no extra words allowed apart from "the," "of," "and," etc.)

Electronic tools are discouraged.  Obscure proper nouns are allowed, but familiar ones are more elegant emot-smile

And I'll provide the first set of initials: HA!  Himemiya Anthy is worth two points.  Who can do better?  The round will close when someone gets a perfect score or we lose interest. emot-smile  Have fun!

Okay, let's give this baby a shot by starting small...

the tHree Amigos (3 points)

Also, we might need a rule clarification here. Technically, depending on what form you use, Japanese names may prove a bit problematic. You used Tenjou Utena as an example, written in the Japanese order. However, if you write it in the Western order, which is technically allowed by modern conventions and is not currently disallowed in the rules of the game, you wind up with uTena tenjoU which is worth 7 points. How should this be addressed?

EDIT: I obviously didn't comprehend some of the rules as uTena tenjoU would still be 2 points, but my point is still valid.

Somewhere, there is an unplugged toaster sitting on a Coleman stove.

Does it feel lonely?

Re: Name Check!: a word game

It is valid indeed!  I think that any form of a name that is in common use ought to be allowed, which would include both Tenjou Utena and Utena Tenjou.  (Both of which, as you say, are worth two points if the initials are TU!)

Flah has set the bar at three points.  Who can beat it?

Perfect ten!!  Plus I got to look it up on Wikipedia and learn something.

Astonishingly, per Wikipedia, the headquarters of the Raytheon Company are currently in waltHam, massAchusetts -- which is also a perfect ten.  emot-aaa

Do you want to suggest new initials, Florence, or shall I? emot-smile

All righty!  If you're having a bad day and just can't take it anymore, you might go visit Souji Mikage.  SM is the next initial pair.  Have fun! emot-dance

Had to Google that one!  Olmos Dam is good for eight!  That's a high bar -- can anyone make nine or ten?
