This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Javiera Mena - Espada

I took a trip down Japanese Utena fandom and...

Apparently Javiera Mena created this music video as a tribute to Utena, and it references many iconic moments from both the film and the television series. I don't speak Spanish, but for those who do, she talks about Utena as inspiration for the video here: http://www.quepasa.cl/articulo/cultura/ … ano.shtml/

I can't even...

Here are the English lyrics translated by piedpiper:

Sword

When I first saw you appear
I still didn't know
That until now I would be
Discovering your life

When I first saw you appear
With sword in backpack
It was the first time in a year
That I finally felt warmth

But now it's not worth it
My candle is spent
I no longer want to spend all my time putting up
These barriers in this universe.
I want your sword to pass only through me
(When the candle lit night lightens my shadow)
In the center of me
And then my willpower
Slips away, ending just like that

When I saw you appear
I still didn't know
That you were beginning
To respond to another voice

Finally I decided to withdraw from this battle

I holstered my sword and dagger,
Deep breath, I delivered myself to whatever will be

But now it's not worth it
My candle is spent
I don't want to spend time putting up
These barriers in this universe
I want your sword to pass through only me,
(When the candlelit night lightens my shadow)
In my center
(Like the brilliant shining lights in a discoteque)
Only to me
(The new moon that changes shape on the bed)
In my center
And I lost my equilibrium
Ending just like that

I wonder
Why do you come?
When you said no
When you know better not
That you can't

No, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no

I want your sword to pass through me only,
(When the candlelit night lightens my shadow)
In my center.

(Dark, dark, brilliant dancing lights in a discothèque)
Only to me.
(A discothèque of brilliant dancing lights, a disocoteque of brilliant dancing lights)
In the center of me
(A discothèque of brilliant dancing lights)
Ends just like that.

Re: Javiera Mena - Espada

I can't see too many visual references in the video aside from the swords. What did I miss?

Re: Javiera Mena - Espada

Oh, I've noticed quite a few but most are veiled! There's a car, a key that looks like the ignition key from the movie, and even a car wash; there's a play on shadow play girls, and a telescope, looking through it from what might or might not be a tower - to name a few. emot-smile
Cool. Thanks for sharing, barafubuki!

Re: Javiera Mena - Espada

I like her album from a couple years ago. This is really nice.

I just watched it and it's AMAZING! Banging pop tune, vaporwave aesthetic and Utena references. And it's very, very gay. And she's a fellow south american. Into it emot-smile
