This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)
The 360, and PS3 aren't overhyped. Notice the Wii is not mentioned, because it is awesome.. They're just the latest round of shoddy electronics. If anything it's the games that come out for them that are overhyped. With the game industry you're going to have a new set of consoles every 5 years or so, and unfortunately not every genereation is going to be as epic as the last. That said the 360 is a pile of junk stacked upon junk since it breaks down so damn often. But it's really the games that are overhyped. Halo 3, GOW, GTAVI, and all that good stuff.
As for Silent Hill. I never played the game, but the movie seemed to be fairly good as far as a game to movie title goes. Never playing the games though I can see why you might dislike it. I know I won't watch the third Resident Evil movie because it has deviated so damn much from the original. The first two were decent, but I don't think of them as part of the Resident Evil universe. More along the lines of some random action flick you see sometimes on late night TV.
ANYONE REMEMBER THE MARIO BROS MOVIE!? Worst adaptation EVER!

Decent chance you and I were the only two people to ever watch it. ^_- I do recall thinking Luigi was pretty cute though...

But WTF? Koopa, the goombas, yoshi wasn't even around in that time period, and Mario doesn't even ride him. Nothing in that movie made a damn piece of sense. It is almost so bad it's funny, but it even fails to do that. At least they got the bomb omb right. It's like they combined every Mario game released to that point and well yeah, that's exactly what they did. Nintendo somehow saw it fit to let this movie be made. On a side note. I'll probably pick it up if I ever see it randomly at a store. Yes, it's awful, but it needs to be seen to be believed.

I agree, they're not much like the games, but I would actually say it's more or less worth watching the third one. I really liked the first -- it's not an Oscar winner by any means, but I think it actually tells a fairly solid story AND scared the pants off me in certain parts -- but the second made me toss the toys right out of the coat. What a crock of shit. Because of that, I only saw the third about a month or so ago, and honestly? Not a brilliant movie, nowhere near as watchable as the first, but it blows the second out of the water. Which isn't hard, but if you liked the first, you'd be okay watching it. I think. It may be just because I adore Milla Jovovich, but with that said not even she could get me to sit through Ultraviolet.

I don't even like the games so I never bothered, but you do remind me of how I wept blood when I tried to watch the live action Inspector Gadget movie. It resembled my reaction to the live action Garfield, except with a lot more swearing. For some reason, although I couldn't watch the whole movie, Bill Murray made the latter slightly more bearable...

I've been lucky. Apparently my friends have really good taste because I've haven't felt overhyped in recent memory.
I've been anti-hyped, though. I was assured by nearly every human being on the planet that Aeon Flux was going to be brain-removal-with-fork bad, but I had to see it because I ADORED the cartoons the film was very loosely based on. Turns out it wasn't so bad. Sure it wasn't nearly as good as the originals or probably even close to a personal favourite, but I'm pretty sure I saw worse movies that week. As long as I could mentally detach what I was looking at from the original work it was downright tolerable.
Oh, and Pan's Labrynth didn't make me cry. According to my friends I'm the only person who can say that and I'm probably lying so I guess that makes me a man of steel or something.

I don't remember crying either. But that could have been the fact I was finishing watching it at 3 or 4 am. So, you're not alone in that one.

I'll raise my hand on this one as well. I never cried during the movie, though it is sad, and one of my favorite movies of all time.Point being, I don't think it's an extreme tear jerker, but that could just be us being emotionless soulless people.

Kingdom Hearts 2. It was supposed to be so very amazing and awesome and fansqueal-inducing. Then I got the game. After waiting out a 3.5 hour intro, you got to the real story, and it was kinda... really crap. The voice acting was atrocious (the actual acting as well as the choices for the voices), and the only reason I play it as often as I do (which actually is pretty rare) is for a couple areas and some characters.
Wasn't remotely worth the money.
couldn't agree more. although I did actually like the part with roxas in the begining, I hated the story after that. Unlike the first KH, which was a celebration of all things classic disney, KH2 was too busy creating original characters with no backstory or character development and creating HUGE plotholes and contradicting the story of hte first game.

The silent hill movie is very faithful to the game. only a few changes were made. and I agree with you on the mario movie. although I love watching it in all it's badness.

I dunno, I take fairly calculated steps in the fandom of absolutely everything, and have always been good about knowing what I'll love ahead of time.
But I was pressured to play Kingdom Hearts, and while I thought it was pretty fun, thought the hype was mostly unjustified. And while I've never played it, I'm a bit tired of everyone squealing over Final Fantasy 7-related things.

I was a HUGE FF7 fan when it came out. All characters to level 99, recorded the FMVs on VHS for rewatching, you name it. I even guiltily enjoyed the ridiculous fanwank OMG SEPHIROTH IS HAWT ALSO SEXY SEPHY-MINIONS NOMNOMMMNOM movie. I was never under the illusion though that it wasn't excessive and needed to stop. Now it really really needs to stop. Final Fantasi XIII is only not an FFVII game in name. The same teams, the same ideas, and shit like 'A FEMALE VERSION OF CLOUD' as their ideas for characters. It's ridiculous.
FFXII at least tried to get away from that a little, using the creative team behind FFT, but they had to make it fit the FF main theme, and so put in a bunch of shit that just wasn't necessary. Like Vaan.
Also, if you didn't cry at Pan's Labyrinth you don't, in fact, have a soul.

Yeah, I'm pretty light on the Final Fantasy games, especially because it seems that the games are, with increasing speed and extent, getting away from actually being fantasy and turning into science fiction or cyberpunk. Which I have nothing against, but it isn't nearly as much my bag as medieval fantasy as seen in, for example, Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IX, which are so far my favorite games in the series.
But that's really all about preference.

Dammit, where did I leave it, then?!
...no, I must have a soul. I physically can't watch The Never-Ending Story when Artax drowns. It's one of my most traumatic childhood memories.

I must be oddly soulless too, because I didn't cry, not that I remember, at Pan's Labyrinth. But I always end up in tears when the Empress is begging Bastian to name her. Doesn't matter how many times I see the movie, it gets me every time.

Holy crap, Clarice. This proves it, you and I are long lost sisters. I still cry when I watch that scene.
I cried watching Pan's Labyrinth too.
And I dunno if I mentioned this, but I found The Davinci Code (the book) overhyped. Sure, the twist was amazing and all, but one thing the hype failed to mention was that the writing is horrible. I'm old fashioned, I guess. I think great ideas are great ideas, but they alone do not make great writing.

TRUE. FACT. I tried to read it, I really did, but I just threw my hands up and stopped reading. I almost never do that. Once I start a book, I am usually determined to finish it through for respect for the writer. I just couldn't with this one. D:

I'll toss in my sentiments of agreement on that. And to think just about everyone and their mothers read that book and talked about how amazing it was. I just couldn't see it, I dunno.
But then again, besides the fact that I thought the writing was atrocious, the story in general wasn't my cup of tea either.

I think the moment I realized I shouldn't listen to my Mom anymore about writing was when she told me that if I ever wanted to write well and be successful, I had to read The Da Vinci Code and take notes. I can't tell you how hard it was to keep from laughing.
I actually would be interested in the story, since I tend to gravitate towards alternative theological theories, and know way too much about Dead Sea Scrolls, blah, blah. That being said, he could have just used the evidence there was instead of making up all this weird art bullshit. As much as a lot of Christians want to deny that Jesus ever boned anyone, there's certainly a lot more evidence for it than the goddamn Rapture. I'd like to see books written about what a crock of shit the Left Behind series is. Anyway, JesusxMaryM OMG OTP 4-EVER.
Hey, speaking of popular, shitty books, remember the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series? God, that awful schmaltz was everywhere.

The Da Vinci Code, to only give half credit to your mom, is an example about how being talented and being successful are often as far apart as you can imagine.

Death Note. I thought it was pretty cool at first, but it got old fast. By the time L died, I was done. If Misa had spend the whole time in chains and they hadn't introduced the little L-clones, it would have been a gajillion times better. But as is? I can't say it was the "ZOMG AWESOME" series people had made it out to be. As a meme, however, it is hilarious.
Edited for spoilers. Thank you, Mylene. Total space cadet here.

Naji, could you edit out the massive spoilers in your post? There are people here who have not finished Death Note and would prefer not to have it spoiled. Thank you.

Maybe it's because I'm a Mello fan, but sometimes I feel like I'm the only DN fan who prefers the series after L dies.
Which leads me to something I find overhyped (and my friend would, quite literally, kill me if she ever heard me say it). L is overhyped. I mean, yes, I'm a huge Death Note fan. But L, I promise you, is not "Justice" incarnate. Or, perhaps a better way to phrase it would be to say that he is no more righteous than Light, and he does more than his share of awful things. I'm sick of the L fans bashing Light, and I'm sick of them condemning Mello and Near. I'll be the first to tell you, I don't even like Near. But when they dislike him for the sole reason that he acts like L... if they're going to hate him, they should pick another reason. And oh, if the two of them are so terrible, would they rather the series have ended right then and there? For Light to be the victor with no one left to oppose him? For L's death to have been in vain?

Thanks, Naji! Hope that didn't come off meanly, but Paradox and I are watching the series, and while I've read the manga and know where things are going, he doesn't, and I don't want to risk spoiling his fun (we're really loving it.)
