This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Re: A newbie's conversion to Utena

I'm thinking more of how she acts than her clothes though. When they're in the arena, for example, it's easy to see who's supposed to be the guy. Yeah, they're doing it because rules, but still. Of course, they change things up as the show goes on, but a newbie wouldn't know that unless they've been spoiled.

Just saying, it's not a crime to take note of the gender roles the show set up without immediately getting what it's going for.

Shorter than the ones he was doing for the SCS or BRS, though.
The recap for 'A Song for a Kingdom now Lost' was ~3,500 words long.
The recap for 'Whispers in the Dark' was only ~2,300 words long(maybe less).
The recap for 'Her Tragedy' was ~2,900 words long.
I certainly hope he's not losing interest in the series. emot-frown

Ah, that's the ep that shows how the Shadow Girls can in fact appear in human form to interact with the character(s).

Re: A newbie's conversion to Utena

I preferred the dub's version of one line:

Now that prince has grown up to become End of the World.

to the sub's:

He is now End of the World.

It seems more thematically correct.

Re: A newbie's conversion to Utena

35's up, but it's shorter than usual. I think it's because it's a bit low-impact, and the full gravity of it isn't realized until you watch episode 36. Like 31 and 32, you have to kind of take them as a set.  It also doesn't help that it's a bit of a mild episode after being slammed with episode 34.

Re: A newbie's conversion to Utena

Am I the only one who detects a bit of white knighting in his frothing-at-the-mouth hatred of Touga?

When I watched it the first time...well, I really don't remember emot-frown I was spoiled quite a bit, so I already knew about Akio's existence and I knew Touga would turn out to be small potatoes. I'm pretty sure I ended up being somewhat sympathetic to him, especially after the movie - which I suspect will also change his views significantly.

his frothing-at-the-mouth hatred of Touga

Putting right/wrong behavioral issues aside, I think Touga's character automatically induces hatred in most men much like how Shiori's character induces hatred in most women - it's hardly mere coincidence that Be-Papas presents these two as a "pair" in the SKU movie.

Re: A newbie's conversion to Utena

He doesn't sound frothy to me.  He clearly dislikes Touga, but that's completely reasonable; we're not supposed to like Touga.  He's an intriguing character because he straddles the border between redeemable and irredeemable so neatly.  Just when you're ready to almost like him, he does something terrible; just when you're ready to write him off, he surprises you.  Any attempt one makes to defend him is short-circuited by his very long and damning inventory of sins, including recent sins.  At best, he's Faith from Buffy/Angel; at worst, he's Gendo.  Though even these comparisons may be giving Touga too much credit.  Or at least that's my feeling about the character.

Re: A newbie's conversion to Utena

at worst, he's Gendo.

A master plotter like Gendo would've been at least MP-Sanetoshi-level popular had he actually got Touga's hot looks (and even hotter scenes).

To be fair, Touga has pissed me off more than once as well (though I wouldn't say I hate him). Like Satyreyes said, he straddles the border between redeemable and irredeemable, making him more frustrating than a character who is just an ass.

How's that work with movie Touga actually being pretty much the (dead) white knight? I wonder.

I'd think Saio would get on people's nerves more. But, then, I empathize with Shiori more than Anthy, and Saio more directly hurt Wakaba, so clearly, I'm skewed here.

I haven't really done a survey on this, I just imagine that since Saionji often ends up as the loser/buttmonkey, that earns him some sympathy points. And he's more clearly a douche from episode one, so you immediately know where you got him.

But not everyone are gonna like or dislike the same characters. It probably depends on our preferences and who we relate to more. Personally I dislike Ruka the most, which might be unfair, but whatever.

My take is that Touga's movie death is symbolic of his being "emotionally" dead after having gone though traumatic childhood events.
