Themesongs for characters!

So basically, I was watching SKU and suddenly I thought of something!

What do you guys think the SKU character soundtracks would be like if they were regular American songs?

I think that Mamiya's theme would be Aerosmith's 'Dude Looks Like a Lady', Akio's would be James Brown's '(Get Up! I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine', Touga's would be ACDC's 'Big Balls', and Miki's would be Billy Joel's 'Piano Man.'

Re: Themesongs for characters!

Oh, man. Well, let's see:

Mikage:

Elevator Man, by Oingo Boingo. This song is just so fitting for Mikage, it defies words.

Who's going down who's comin with me
Who wants to take a chance
On a piece of abstract reality
               It's only just a dance
Won't you come and ride with the elevator man
Who's goin down yeah - movin' slow without a sound

Nowhere Man, by The Beatles. I picture Mikage sitting alone in Nemuro Hall, typing away at his typewriter  when I listen to the song. 'Making all his nowhere plans for nobody'. It's really perfect for how empty his attempts at the Duelist game are.

He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?
                  Nowhere Man, don't worry,
                  Take your time, don't hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
                  lends you a hand.

World Leader Pretend by REM. This has more of an intellectual feel to it, while still keeping some of the abstract, stream-of-consciousness wording I like. This reminds me of Mikage as the string-pulling manipulator, the 'ruler' of his little sub-world. He really had a greater measure of power over the students than the other Duelists had. 'This is my time, I have been given the freedom to do as I see fit' give me this impression of how fleeting his 'time' really was.

                This is my world
And I am world leader pretend
                 This is my life
                 And this is my time
I have been given the freedom
To do as I see fit
It's high time I've razed the walls
                 That I've constructed

Mamiya:

Hello, by Evanescence. It's a very haunting song, almost like it's being sung by an actual ghost. The almost schizophrenic sense I get from 'Hello, I'm your mind giving you someone to talk to' reminds me of Mikage and Mamiya's relationship during the Black Rose Saga.

If I smile and don't believe
Soon I know I'll wake from this dream
Don't try to fix me, I'm not broken
Hello I'm the lie living for you so you can hide

And I'm sure I'll think of more later. emot-biggrin

Hello is in general a very Utena song... especially for the movie...

Yeah... I never thought about it before... but Nowhere Man does suit Mikage very well!  Very very very well!

Anyway I think Akio needs something a little more direct, don't you? How about Nine Inch Nails' Big Man With a Gun. Linked the lyrics for a reason.

As for Evanescence, we could take their whole discography as an orgy of SKU-able songs. Seriously, are they fans? emot-confused

Also I just realized like 90% of my music collection is non-American musicians. emot-frown

For Akio, I think of October Project's 'Funeral In His Heart', and David Bowie's 'Within You' from the Labyrinth movie. The latter is because I have an LJ icon of Akio in his End of the World gear with the quote 'I move the stars for no one', and now I can't help but think of the song when I see him in it. I can't listen to "She's a Rebel" by Green Day without thinking of Utena.  It's just too perfect...

She's a rebel
She's a saint
She's salt of the earth
And she's dangerous

She sings the revolution
the dawning of our lives
she brings this liberation
that I just can't define
nothing comes to mind

Re: Themesongs for characters!

I think Saionji's theme song could be Addicted to You by (whiny) Simple Plan.
Particularly in reference to having lost Anthy.

I heard you're doin' okay
But I want you to know
I'm addic-
<---- the joke is important emot-wink
I'm addicted to you

I can't pretend I don't care
When you don't think about me
Do you think I deserve this?
I tried to make you happy
But you left anyway

I'm tryin' to forget that
I'm addicted to you
But I want it, and I need it
I'm addicted to you

Now it's over
Can't forget what you said
And I never
Want to do this again

Heart breaker!
Heart breaker!

Re: Themesongs for characters!

Slightly tongue in cheek, but for Nanami...

#1 Crush - Garbage

I would die for you
I would die for you
I've been dying just to feel you by my side
To know that you're mine

I will cry for you
I will cry for you
I will wash away your pain with all my tears
And drown your fear

I will pray for you
I will pray for you
I will sell my soul for something pure and true
Someone like you

See your face every place that I walk in
Hear your voice every time I am talking
You will believe in me
And I will never be ignored

I will burn for you
Feel pain for you
I will twist the knife and bleed my aching heart
And tear it apart

I will lie for you
Beg and steal for you
I will crawl on hands and knees until you see
You're just like me

Violate all The love that I'm missing
Throw away all the pain that I'm living
You will believe in me
And I can never be ignored

I would die for you
I would kill for you
I will steal for you
I'd do time for you
I would wait for you
I'd make room for you
I'd sail ships for you
To be close to you
To be a part of you
'Cause I believe in you
I believe in you
I would die for you.

Seconding Tori Amos' crucify and adding Blood Roses for Akio/Anthy

(you should be able to do the whole of Utena only with Tori Amos songs. It is known)

For some reason the Dresden Girl's The Perfect Fit always felt to me like a Shiori's song.

I heard this playing a few weeks ago and made the same connection.

Being musically impaired, the only other song I've related to something from the series is I'll Be by Goo Goo Dolls. (Which I had to google the lyrics for to find out.)

The chorus for it always makes me think of Mitsuru.

In case anyone knows less about music than I do:

I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of you life

GOD DAMN IT WHAT IS THIS, you're like the 10,000th person to relate Akio to Jareth! I've never seen Labyrinth, but what little I know about it makes it sound like if Akio were actually capable of loving or focusing obsession on another, that it'd come out a lot like this guy. Just NO HAPPY PANTS. They violate my overdeveloped sense of male fashions. Someone on AFU used to have a Jareth quote that sounded like something Akio would say if he were in love. Something like 'do everything I say and I'll be your slave'.

Yes, I know about the video. I got about three seconds in and turned it off. Once in a blue moon, I just know better. As for who Barry White is, he's apparently audiosex to a lot of women and yet sexual kryptonite to me, and he was the only thing I could think of at the moment that would turn me off more than Akio being James Brown. Yikes.

Something like 'do everything I say and I'll be your slave'.

...I've only KIND of understood the Jareth/Akio thing -- Labyrinth was one of my favourite movies as a kid, and it wasn't until I bought the DVD a year or so back and watched it again for the first time since I was about eight that I kind of picked up on the vibe. Mostly it's just because there's this one ballroom scene inside a crystal orb that came across as a strange kind of "rape" to me, if only a rape of the character's innocence. She'd been put in an adult environment with Jareth although she was still pretty much a kid, and it reminded me of that infamous ep. 33 scene. About lunch. Because everyone knows it is all about the lunch meat.

It's a good movie though -- particularly if you're a kid of the eighties -- and the quote is: "I ask for so little! Just fear me, love me, do as I say...and I will be your slave." The delivery of that is pitch-perfect. Although as you say, the pants...oh, the PANTS. There's a song in the movie called Magic Dance, hence why my sister and I always refer to such pants as "David Bowie's Magic Pants!"

...and er, I might as well make a song contribution. This particular song just reminds me of Anthy's attempt at sky-diving off the top of the school in her nightgown, which is probably because I was watching it earlier today. Er. Is it bad that it's one of my favourite scenes ever?

Scarlet, Brooke Fraser (http://download.yousendit.com/79DB216804C13406)

Middle of nowhere
Finally you can breathe
Nobody knows your name
It's easier

Shut your eyes tightly
Clench your fists 'til they almost bleed
Cautiously, lightly
Gently expose what's underneath

And all you feel now
Is the scarlet in your day
Even it's real
You can't stay...

[Chorus]
So there you go
You're gone for good
There you go
You're gone for good

Your mind is swollen
From months of thought without release
They've taken their toll on you
This very moment
Of timid and fragile honesty
Is precious and rare and fleeting

And all you feel now
Is the scarlet in your day
Even it's real
You can't stay...

Every song on their cds is perfect for Utena!  EVERY ONE!!!

GYAAAAAAAH!!!!

But especially perfect ones are 'My Immortal' for Miki/Utena/Juri, "Taking Over Me" for Wakaba/Nanami/Juri, "Haunted" for Juri, 'Bring Me To Life' for Anthy, 'Going Under' for Juri (she has A LOT of Evanescence themes, ne?), 'Imaginary' for Anthy, 'Tourniquet' for Wakaba/Nanami, and 'Hello' for... well... just about anybody.

I was the most Utena-obsessed guy at my club, but when I watched the movie for the third time a few weeks before I graduated I didn't see any Goblin King/Akio parallels.  Now that I'm looking for them they're clearly there, but they didn't hit me over the head.

Re: Themesongs for characters!

I've always thought "Rose Red" by Emilie Autumn was the perfect Anthy theme song.

A thousand years gone by
Too late to wonder why
I'm here alone
If in my darkest hour
She rose that fell a flower
I should have known

Rose Rose Rose Red
Will I ever see thee wed
Only if you can capture me

And "Gravity" by Vienna Teng has always been my Anthy/Utena love theme.

Hey love
That's the name we've long held back
From the core of truth

So don't turn away now
I am turning in revolution
These are the scars that silence carved
On me

Re: Themesongs for characters!

Oh! Oh! I remember one for Touga!

Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy - Queen

I can dim the lights and sing you songs full of sad things
We can do the tango just for two
I can serenade and gently play on your heart strings
Be your valentino just for you

Ooh love - ooh loverboy
What're you doin' tonight, hey boy
Set my alarm, turn on my charm
That's because I'm a good old-fashioned lover boy

Ooh let me feel your heartbeat (Grow faster, faster)
Ooh ooh can you feel my love heat
Come on and sit on my hot-seat of love
And tell me how do you feel right after-all
I'd like for you and I to go romancing
Say the word - your wish is my command

Ooh love - ooh loverboy
What're you doin' tonight, hey boy
Write my letter
Feel much better
And use my fancy patter on the telephone

When I'm not with you
I think of you always
(I miss those long hot summer nights)
I miss you
When I'm not with you
Think of me always
Love you - love you

Hey boy where do you get it from
Hey boy where did you go ?
I learned my passion in the good old
Fashioned school of loverboys

Dining at the Ritz we'll meet at nine precisely
(One two three four five six seven eight nine o' clock)
I will pay the bill, you taste the wine
Driving back in style, in my saloon will do quite nicely
Just take me back to yours that will be fine (Come on and get it)

Ooh love, (There he goes again just like a good old-fashioned lover boy)
Ooh loverboy
What're you doin' tonight, hey boy
Everything's all right
Just hold on tight
That's because I'm a good old-fashioned fashioned lover boy

No one can convince me that this song doesn't fit him perfectly. No one.

Argh!  My stupid ctrl+c/ctrl+v function is not working for some bizarre reason, but...

Yay!  Someone agrees with me about Hotel California!  Hence my sig.

As far as other songs that work:

Snow White Queen, off Evanescence's new album, for Saionji and Anthy.

Everybody's Fool, also Evanescence, for Shiori.

Cry Little Sister, by Gerard McMann, for Akio and Anthy.  Check out the lyrics, seriously.  I believe this was the end credits to the goofy 80s vampire movie The Lost Boys.

White Rabbit, by Jefferson Airplane...tell me it doesn't work emot-tongue.

Moondance, by Nightwish.  This song has no words, but every time I hear it it reminds me of the instrumentals behind a duel chorus.

- Leah, who is still rebuilding the chunks of music collection she lost to a catastrophic HD failure.  emot-gonk

Last thing I remember, I was running for the door...I had to find my passage back to the place I was before.  "Relax," said the night man, "We are programmed to recieve.  You can check out any time you like...but you can never leave!"
