Akio, you have nice turns of phrase, but your points aren't clear and you have no textual support. I can't give this a passing grade.

I wish that I could understand more of these. At least they're not kanji-fiends, so I can understand a little. I feel kind of bad for enjoying the part with Juri and Shiori so much.

Re: The Utena Doujinshi Archive

I'm sort of a newbie here on the forums, but if other people would be interested, I wouldn't mind trying my hand at some rough translations of the quite entertaining stories that have been put up on the Doujinshi Archive; I lack the technical expertise to make scanlations, but I might be able to provide some serviceable text-based translations or something of the sort. Some of the stories, especially those in Antena, hit my Utena-fan funny bone.

Even rough summaries would be AWESOME of you. etc-love etc-love  As for Antena.. the artwork is lovely, but I didn't get that doujinshi much because the main story depends a lot on what they're saying, I think. emot-frown I can tell it's really emotional, but it doesn't help much because I don't know what they're talking about.

They usually have doujinshi at anime conventions, and I'm going to be going to a really big one soon, so I'm sure that they'll have some there that I can buy. Hopefully they won't check for ID when I ask to buy it, and I learned from Anime Boston not to tell them my real age. school-devil

I've managed to plow through Antena and have a more or less functional translation for it; should I post it here, or perhaps post it in a new thread? I follow where I am led!

Re: The Utena Doujinshi Archive

Okay, here's a page-by-page translation of the stories in Antena and Potato Masher
Some notes on reading it -- I fear I was slightly inconsistent with the first few pages, but the general rules still stand. I've skipped pages that didn't have any text to speak of, and I've more or less glossed over sound effects (I'm sorry, I'm bad). Quotation marks indicate either spoken dialogue or thought balloons, while as unquoted text is usually text from text boxes, be it expositional or monologue. Text sandwiched between asterisks is generally incidental text that has been written in by hand by the author either inside speech bubbles or outside of them somewhere. For all forms of text, I've tried to give a new line for each bubble/box/grouping, but my formating is atrocious and may implode. In Potato Masher, I skipped most of the superfluous moaning and whining for my own sanity. It's just a collection of "ahhh's" and "ughhnn's," so you're not missing much of anything. If there are any questions concerning translation or cultural notes or the like, I'm more than willing to take them!

ANTENA

p.4
Title-- The Candles of Feelings
First Panel – “Ahh”

p.5
First Panel (sound effects) – clang, clang, clang
Panels 2-3 – “To Ohtori Akio… Death!”
Box insert – HOW TO Midnight Ritual

Once you’ve put a trivet holding up candles on your head, put on your special white costume and put a geta on one foot, you’re ready to GO! Drive your straw doll to a shine’s sacred tree or to a Torii with a five-inch nail! While doing it, be sure to think about your target reeaaally hard, okay! etc-love Additionally, if you put a hair or something of the sort from the person you’re thinking about in straw doll, the effectiveness will significantly go UP! But be careful, if you’re seen by someone, it won’t work!

Bottom panel – “For some reason, recently my chest…*ow,ow,ow…*”
Bottom line – Believe in miracles, and they will know your feelings…

p.6
  Title – My Prince

First panel – You’re a girl, aren’t you. Furthermore, you are powerless.
If you had power, you could do anything.

Second panel – You could even free her from her destiny.
                          Don’t make that miserable face.
Third panel – You’ve done your best up until now, so you don’t have to blame yourself like that.
You’ve taken good care of the Rose Signet until now, haven’t you.
Fourth panel – As your reward, I give you a ki—Buh!
                        “Shut up!”

p.7
    Title – Rose and Release
First panel – I’m Himemiya Anthy, 14 years old.
*From this day forth, I am your flower*
(Well, I’ve been alive for how many decades(?) but I’m 14(lol))
I never let escape the girl (prey) I set my sights on.
Second panel – The target of one such as myself is the currently incredibly popular girl who wears boy’s clothes, (Miss) Tenjou Utena.  *Her habit of says she’s a prince or something – her being wet behind the ears is what’s so cute about her*
Types like this go down quickly if you seduce them with some tears.

p.8
First panel – In order to capture Miss Utena’s heart, I worked hard night and day.
                      *“Huh?”*
*“There! Miss Utena! Finish him off!”*
Second panel – *“Just give up already!”*
*“It was just a coincidence! It wasn’t a miracle!”*
Third panel – * a short-lived victory…*
*“I’m taking back what’s normal for me.”*
It’s really hard to forcibly make someone win against people they have no chance against.
Fourth panel – And, I brought things to all the way to here, the best part!!
                        *“Are you running away!!”*
                        *“SUCCESS!!”*

p. 9
  First panel – --------However.
Letter – I’m going on a trip. I was just putting on airs of being a prince who could protect you. You….. I’m not qualified to become your prince. Not at all!! So so, please absolutely do not come looking for me.
                                           Absolutely not, okay!!
                                                      Tenjou Utena
Second panel – “Fufu”
                         This time
Third panel – I’m going to go out to meet you. No matter where you are, I will definitely find you.
*How silly of you, Utena. ‘Don’t look for me,’ you say. It’s the same thing as saying ‘look for me please.’*
I won’t let you escape. Wait for me. Utena.
                      THE END.

p.12
Title – Welcome to the Dueling Arena
First panel – “Isn’t this your room.”
“Yes, the dueling arena was in fact the Chairman’s Room.”
Second panel – “So…”
Third panel – “In that case, the stairs to the Dueling Arena…”
“Yes, you all went up quite a lot of stairs.”
Fourth panel – “!  So Himemiya –“
“Yes, I always got up here first using the elevator.”
Fifth panel – “Awww! Just Himemiya – that’s unfair!”
                       *”That was really tough!”*
                       *Ahahaha*
“I let you use the gondola afterwards, didn’t I?”
                         *hahaha*
                      “Was it good exercise, Utena-sama?”
                         *fufufu*
                 The End  too nasty

p.13

Second panel – -------who are you?

p.14
Second panel – “haa, ha, haa”
Third panel – “haa…”

p.15

                    “What are you doing…?”
Second panel – “‘What?’”
Fourth panel – “Aren’t I pulling out the swords that are stabbing you!”

p.16
First panel – “Hgnn!”
Second panel – “It’s impossible, stop…”
Third panel – “Ah!”
Fourth panel – “It’s impossible…”

Third panel – “Even if it takes decades or centuries, I’ll pull all those swords from you!”

p.22
First panel – “I want to help you!”

p.23

“The egg’s shell has not yet been broken?”
Third panel – “The President of the Student Council lost as well.”
“In the end she has managed to win the seventh duel called “Self” as well.
Fourth panel – “She, who while wounded protected the Rose Bride, made you recall something familiar.”
“Did not the heart of the Rose Bride too move just a little?”
Fifth panel – “Furthermore, it seems that you too have begun to have hopes for her.”
                      “No… that’s not right.”

p.26
First panel – The first duel entitled ‘Friendship’
Since the day, the time when by chance she came to fight the head of the Kendo Club
You have had hope for her.
Third panel – “Not too bad, for a girl.”
“Trying to be a prince who saves the weak princess?”

p.27
Second panel – “Fh… It’s over.”
Fourth panel – “What…”
                        “I lost…?”
Fifth panel – “Cheer up, Saionji…sempai.”

p.28
First panel – She was certainly very interesting.
Your power… all of the Power of Dios may awaken.
The following battles were all very individual.
Third panel – “I could never reproduce that tone.”
“I must get that music back at any cost.”

p.29
Second panel – “I will absolutely not lose. She believes in me.”
Third panel – “There! Utena-sama! Finish him off!”
Fourth panel – “Huh…”

p.30
First panel – I’ll say it, but it wasn’t the power to revolutionize the world that caught them.

Third panel – “Are you all right? Prince.”
                      “We’ve just started.”

p.31
First panel – “How unfortunate, you’re already exhausted.”
“But I won’t go easy on you!”
Second panel – “There’s no such thing as miracles!”
Fourth panel – “The vibrator!”
“The whole joint part’s in my vagina…!”
Fifth panel – “N, no..”
                     “This is…Ahhhah…Aaahh!”

p.32
First panel – Yes, the young always aim for the End of the World…
Third panel – “Until now I have always gazed at my brother.”

Third panel – “Kh, come soon…!”
Fifth panel – “H,..hot!”
                     “I’m coming….”

p.34
First panel – “However, even after these seven duels, she is still a duelist.”
“I wonder if she indeed is the person we hope for.”
Second panel – “Certainly if things continue this way, it is possible that she will arrive at the duel entitled ‘Revolution.’”
“The day when you will be completely freed is perhaps close at hand.”
Third panel – “….. Don’t make that face.”
“In looking forward to that day, our gains are held in common.”
Fourth panel – “But soon a new stage begins.”
“In the duels that follow, how will she fight, I wonder…”
Fifth panel – “ ‘The Man who Mixes Mangas’ appears!”
“This time, I tried mixing ‘Utena’ and ‘Soapland Fighter!’”
“Is that really okay to end things like this?”
                     *What’s Soapland Fighter?*

Re: The Utena Doujinshi Archive

atolm, you are amazing. emot-gonk etc-love etc-love etc-love etc-love

The story makes (obviously) so much more sense now. I love how in-character Utena and Anthy are in it.. and how Anthy 'came to her senses' at the end.

..and I love the dueling arena/Akio's tower gag story. emot-biggrin It certainly gives that part of the anime a more light-hearted feel.

Thank you again. etc-love etc-love etc-love
