This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Re: Juri/Ruka/Utena! Analyze deliberate dupe shots from Juri's duels!

Ruka knowing the locket would be hit, and willingly giving his life for that, is quite intriguing. It's certainly something for me to chew on for a while. If that's the case, I sort of feel even worse for Ruka than I did before: that's an awful small miracle to sell your life for. emot-frown And I DO feel bad for him. Yeah, he's somewhat Machiavellian, and yeah, he was motivated as much by his desire for Jury as his desire to free her...but he acted on it in any case, aware of what it would cost him, and as Anthy said in the movie-manga: "It's what we DO that never lies."

That's why Ruka has always been one of my favorites. He knew he was going to die - the shadow girls keep saying he forced himself to return to school out of his sickbed, even though he was so sick, blah blah blah. I don't think there was any way out of his death, but at the end, he decided to make something good come out of it. That's selflessness, at least in principle, and a shadow of what is to come with Utena and Anthy.

On an entirely random note, you guys all know the title of episode 29, "Azure paler than the sky," right? (Of course you do) I rewatched it this weekend and just realized that the word for "azure", which is "ruri", has as its' first character the first kanji of Ruka's name, and as its second character the second kanji of Juri's name. (ru ri...ha ha ha)

Re: Juri/Ruka/Utena! Analyze deliberate dupe shots from Juri's duels!

The fact that Juri's duels line up like that is something I've always wondered about, and what kind of attached me to those couple of episodes -that and that Ruka is one of my favorite marginal characters emot-biggrin. I'm glad someone else noticed those, and I'm not totally insane. I've always wanted to attribute it to the fact that Juri and utena parallel each other. I think that might have a tiny part in this, helping to showcase how Utena could've been Juri, and vice versa, with some coaching from Akio, but I'm totally in agreence with Rosemary Bats on everything.

Edit:In the second set, I think it's about the sixth one down, did anyone notice that the way Juri is pushing Utena is much more forceful then the way Ruka pushes Juri? On rereading the thread I noticed that, and it somehow bothers me. It could just be the quality of the caps, I guess, but Ruka seems to have this almost gentle, maybe even gleeful expression, while Juri's looking at Utena with absolute contempt, maybe even a little rage. That got me to wondering if SHE is realizing the parallels herself, and even though she's fighting Utena, she's really seeing the battle from Ruka's perspective, and seeing herself. Is she becoming contemptuous of herself, maybe even self-loathing? Or if not neccessarily herself, but her beliefs and her feelings about things?

The first time you looked at her curves you were hooked
And the glances you took, took hold of you and demanded that you stay
And sunk in their teeth, bit your heart and released
Such a charge that you need another touch, another taste, another fix

Re: Juri/Ruka/Utena! Analyze deliberate dupe shots from Juri's duels!

I always thought the irony of Juri's character is that she doesn't want to believe what she really does believe. She sees through the game but wants it to be real. It's like she's a brilliant divinity student at a devoutly religious school...but deep down, she's an atheist. How could she not shoot herself in the foot at every second step?
