This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Re: SKU Sims

And now...

http://imageshack.us/a/img42/7766/screenshottco.jpg

Akio stares at a treasure map!

Oh, and you thought things would get less dorky.  This is Maxis we're talking about.  No such luck.

http://imageshack.us/a/img338/6044/screenshot2ez.jpg

He can't seduce anyone into digging it up for him, either.

Then he went and met his sister.

http://imageshack.us/a/img689/6382/screenshot3gv.jpg

Who lives in a satisfactorily tall and pointy tower.  Shame it's not his.  Hrm.

So of course, it didn't take long for this to happen:

http://imageshack.us/a/img805/8416/screenshot4pn.jpg

And likewise this:

http://imageshack.us/a/img593/1349/screenshot6rm.jpg

And then chimes played.  emot-frown

http://imageshack.us/a/img72/5103/screenshot10ri.jpg

She's pregnant.  emot-gonk emot-gonk emot-gonk emot-gonk emot-gonk emot-gonk emot-gonk emot-gonk emot-gonk

That right there is a baby bump.  And I made it happen.  Oh, crap.

Curse this making them act in-character!

Speaking of which...

http://imageshack.us/a/img189/3315/screenshot7ho.jpg

The game wanted me to get information from some scouts.  I couldn't do it in er... "good" conscience without having Akio seduce them.

And I love how he still gets relationship bonuses if they turn down his romantic advances.  That chick up there stomped on the Touga rose he offered her, and it still improved their relationship.

http://imageshack.us/a/img15/3253/screenshot8pz.jpg

So that's what Akio's up to with that guy wearing a fox on his head.  A fox.  I kid you not.  Akio, I would question your taste if I knew that really, you didn't have any.

And at the end of the day, he sat down to a nice bowl of gruel in his awesomely decorated throne room.

http://imageshack.us/a/img707/2918/screenshot5vw.jpg

Those peacock egg lamps sure are symbolic!

The room is huge, by the way, and these are the only decorations in it.  In Sims Medieval, you can't change the size of the rooms, only how they're decorated.  If you're creative enough, you can get a fair bit of use out of just what's available, but the Hero sims start almost as poor as dirt, so you end up with either the sims sitting on, like, crates, or you get a throne room with just five whole pieces of furniture, like this.

And who do we get next?

http://imageshack.us/a/img12/9075/screenshot12gk.jpg

More hair, damnit, we need more hair!

There is longer hair, but either a) it comes with ridiculous hats or b) it's like... slicked or tied back.  And what would Touga be without flowy forelocks?  All in all, I think he came out pretty well.  There's something absurd about trying to make a Sim accurate to a character design from a highly-stylized anime (how am I supposed to know what the v-shaped nose-squiggle says about the exact position of Akio's nostrils?) but... well, while I was designing his outfit (before I had fixed his face, for the record) Touga spent a few moments looking like Medieval pretty-boy Ronald McDonald.

http://imageshack.us/a/img5/3392/screenshot9tq.jpg

See the improvement?  See it?

That jawline is not angular enough, and the eyebrows are all wrong!  Thank heavens I'm not doing this for, like, Bleach, as for all that Utena's animation is stylized, it is very, very precise.  Bleach, I'd just be so, so tempted to base the sims off of QUALITY faces.

Anyways, I wanted to do Touga next, it seemed in-keeping with the general principle of "oldest characters first," but I thought I'd have to do a few more quests before I got the banquet hall and unlocked the spy career.  And really, the only place for Touga in this kingdom is as the spy.  The traits I picked for him are Entitled (it came with the expansion pack, back when I had money) and Chivalrous, and his fatal flaw is Licentious.  You know it had to be.

Next time: Anthy saves a boar, gets people to kill dragons!  Maybe.  And has Akio's kid.  emot-gonk  And Touga is a terrible spy who sleeps with everyone.

Yeahh... when I was making my Utena sims, I wanted to make them look Japanese (or Indian, for Anthy), but I also wanted to keep the pointy-ness, so they didn't turn out quite Asian.

Why thank you!  I've noticed that they look much more like themselves (with the exception of Touga's Ronald McDonald outfit) once they just have hair and clothing that's the right colors, and I think that's much more a testament to SKU's visual design than my simming skills.

Although this seems to run off the Sims 3 engine, and... by the time I gave up Sims 2, I had modded it to the point where the sims were almost photo-realistic.  Sims Medieval is, in general, a bit less realistic than Sims 3 in terms of graphics, almost all the hair is big chunks rather than strands and layers, and the coloring is a lot less intricate.  I've looked into modding for Medieval, to get sufficiently fabulous mullets and whatnot, but it looks like it's even more of a pain in the ass than modding Sims 3.

The treasure chest contained a better shovel, some random bits of stuff I don't know how to use, part of another map, and a title document that will change Akio's title from "Lord" to... "Treasure Hunter," I think, and as he levels up that might be the way to get him to have the "Dread Pirate" title.  And 8 Simoleons.  Because that will definitely be enough to redecorate the new dining hall that's got Touga's panties in such a twist, since the decorations there aren't good enough for him and his Entitled trait.

Lurv wrote:

Hrm... I don't think I'm really focusing on ethnicity with this.  More, I'm trying to interpret the stylized design into what they're "supposed" to look like, and then re-translate that into Sims-brand stylization, and yeah, preserving the pointy-ness and making everyone pretty much as skinny as possible.  With the mods I have in Sims 3 right now (which is probably part of the reason my game's not functioning perfectly, aside from the Mac version just plain having stability issues) I could get them too skinny, but Medieval's slider bars don't go that far.

And now, Anthy is a witch, and tries to save a boar!

She has the option to try and get Akio's advisor NPC to call off the boar hunt and put up a bounty for dragons, but it's a matter of trust, and well, Anthy has trust issues.  So she's got to do this on her own!

First, out to the forest, where she meets her definition of a crowd: three guys and Touga sharpening his sword.  I love how the bright colors set the SKU sims apart visually from the random NPC's and Townies.

http://imageshack.us/a/img545/934/screenshot2la.jpg

... and she's pregnant.  With Akio's kid. emot-gonk

http://imageshack.us/a/img231/1769/screenshot3cdn.jpg

WHY?!

Shortly after, she bears a son.

http://imageshack.us/a/img855/3153/screenshot4cxq.jpg

I shall call him Prince Gentian, the Neglected!

Seriously, I was amazed this kid didn't die or get taken away by Medieval social workers, because Anthy never laid a finger on him, and neither did anyone else.  I guess... I guess they didn't have have social workers...  And while Sims Medieval can have crime, and murder, and alcoholism, I guess they draw the line a infants starving in their cradles, so babies are pretty much indestructible.

But, because the kid was wailing all day and night, Anthy couldn't sleep in bed and had to go meditate out in the garden.

http://imageshack.us/a/img204/8130/screenshot8mv.jpg

Then the kid grew up.  He does in fact get the title "Prince," and the clothing options for children are terrible.  I settle on some sort of horrible jumpsuit in the colors of the Ohtori standard uniforms.

http://imageshack.us/a/img407/2817/screenshot12m.jpg

Hrm... I might have to make some more of these, so I can call them Mamiya and Dios... school-devil

Then, Anthy got on with the boar-saving quest, and with being a witch.

http://imageshack.us/a/img248/3863/screenshot5ig.jpg

That's an awfully big pickaxe you got there, Anthy...

She also scries in her magic scrying machine:

http://imageshack.us/a/img836/5474/screenshot9vy.jpg

And, for the quest and her daily duties, she curses some dudes.

http://imageshack.us/a/img138/1608/screenshot13sc.jpg

Why do I get the feeling this is terribly in-character?

http://imageshack.us/a/img545/9932/screenshot14vh.jpg

I'll need to get her a better staff once she advances past Level Suck, and I get a blacksmith.  I'm thinking Mikage: it's the profession with the most fire involved, and he was responsible for the first epidemic of people getting swords pulled out of them...

Her cursing duties done, Anthy hops on over to the throne room, where Akio is sitting on his throne.  This picture is just too good to pass up.

http://imageshack.us/a/img402/441/screenshot15mu.jpg

I make with the baby-making plan, and Touga looks appropriately horrified.  And he's not even assimilated into the love dodecahedron yet.

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/5991/screenshot16sz.jpg

Then Anthy finishes out the quest by wandering around in a cave, and I take the chance to add to her Nightshade collection.

http://imageshack.us/a/img132/189/screenshot19b.jpg

And then, it's time for a new Hero sim!  Who will it be this time?

http://imageshack.us/a/img715/4593/screenshotngte.jpg

It's Brother Saonji, the monk, in his bright teal leggings!  emot-rofl  Well, if I'm handing out Legendary traits by the end of this, I know who's gonna get the "better wardrobe" trait.  I don't care if that's not in-character, that outfit looks terrible!  And I tried his kendo practice outfit too, and it wasn't any better.  Damn these monk robes of self-denial!

On a solitary serious note, it was an almost physically painful process to re-create an expression the every detail of which was molded by tension and suffering.  Anthy's probably dissociating with that blank look she's got, and Akio and Touga are almost definitely fronting, but it didn't really hit home until I was like, "... and mouth corners all the way down, because that's... that's... the thing... with like, micro-expressions or something."

But, uh, funny things!

His personality traits are Dedicated and Chivalrous, the latter mostly because it's just sort of the go-to trait for SKU characters, and none of the other traits really fit.  EAxis hasn't coded in a trait for "cripplingly low self esteem" or "helpless in the face of inevitable loss" because this game is just not that deep, and (this is its advantage over Sims 3, I think) it knows it.  It knows that any sort of human narrative is going to be provided by the player.  So while "insecure" may be a more accurate description of Saonji's Fatal Flaw, the one I choose is Bloodthirsty, because it will have him go around and smack like, everybody.

And I said I wasn't going to play favorites.  Hah.

I'm about 90% sure who's getting what professions, now, but I still need to decide who would make the best leader of a corrupt, fire-and-brimstone church:  Shiori, Kozue, Ruka, or Wakaba.  Or Nanami could be the church leader and one of the others could be the Physician.  Maybe Ruka, with his health problems...

Maybe I could get him to catch the plague... school-devil

I'd love to get some input on this, either way, though it still won't show up for a while.

Next time:  There's... there's a child missing.  And Touga's gonna go find... him?  Oh, heck.  There's no way this won't turn out wonderfully!

Sounds like like Wakaba to me. emot-tongue

Seriously though, I'm not sure. Ruka could work, but he feels so unimportant to me.

Kozue would be kind of ironic.

Also, I kinda like the hairs for Medieval better than Sims 3, though I think that has more to do with the actual styles themselves, than the textures. Some of the meshes in Sims 3 are just so awkward-looking. emot-frown

(And I like to keep their likely ethnicity in mind because that makes breeding them more fun. ;) Of course, since I also have to keep their pointy-ness, they all get really pointy babies.)

No one in SKU is a slam-dunk for the leader of a corrupt church, but if it's anyone then I'd say it's clearly Mikage.  Apart from Akio, he's the only one who runs an institution that is designed to subvert the impressionable for his own benefit.  And unlike Akio's crew, Mikage's posse ends up brainwashed and with fanatic zeal.  The Church of the Black Rose.

Of the four you name, I think Wakaba is Best Preacher, Ruka is Best Icon, Shiori is Best Acolyte, and Kozue is Best Fundraiser.

I think I'm leaning towards making Nanami the leader of the church, and you know what? Wakaba would make a decent physician.  I'd throw Ruka in the position first, if I could be sure of being able to off him, but it's pretty hard to kill non-combat Hero sims, and I'm not sure if the expansion pack has added the capability for non-combat Hero sims to wield swords.  Otherwise I could just have Akio kill him in a duel.

The choices are more limited in Medieval (clothes especially: you can't mix tops+bottoms, and some outfits are specific to certain professions) but they tend to be more EPIC.  They have Gimli beards and Aragorn crowns!  And lots and lots of silly hats!  I'm actually a little surprised that there aren't better matches for SKU's rampant 80's hair.

It's Sims 2 that wins the Awkward Hairstyle Trophy, in my book.  There was one that was so badly 2D from almost every angle that it was pretty much unusable.  And I do love being able to mess with the hair colors to my heart's content.  But then, that's what Custom Content's for.

Breeding in Medieval, well... the aging works like Sims Original Flavor, and the kids only age up (and they go from kids to adults, with nothing in between) if their parents are hero sims and they die.  So the kids are pretty irrelevant, generally.

Yeah, but if Mikage's the Church dude, who's the Blacksmith?  I suppose it would be Wakaba, for her role in Utena's evolution as a hero.

If I was going for thematic fidelity, I'd pick Mikage for church guy, but this is a balance between fidelity, LOLs, and how much I want someone ASAP who can make Akio, Touga, and Anthy some gear that doesn't suck.

But in the meantime, Touga throws himself a Fail Party!

Some of the flavor text for the Missing Child quest is Touga saying, "I will find him with subtlety!"  Subtlety, huh?  Is that what they're calling it these days?  Alright then, let's see this subtlety.

http://imageshack.us/a/img109/1921/screenshot2xlm.jpg

Awesome sword skills there, dude.  I'm sure the ladies luuurve that face you're making.

So then, Touga tries using this "subtlety" on Akio.

http://imageshack.us/a/img32/6035/screenshot4pe.jpg

It goes about as well as one might expect. emot-rofl

So he heads over to the monastery, to see the one person who hopefully won't spurn his subtlety.

http://imageshack.us/a/img850/3323/screenshot5ve.jpg

It's not long before they're friends, but then Touga takes the Licentious option of... "Compliment Ankles".

http://imageshack.us/a/img716/943/screenshot6if.jpg

That face Saonji's making is priceless.  I hear you, sweetie.  I do.

But the two part on good terms, even with Touga exhausted, starving, and pissed off at both his inability to woo anyone and the spartan furnishings at the monastery.

http://imageshack.us/a/img690/6172/screenshot9dh.jpg

D'awwww. etc-love

I'm not sure what I'll do with these two.  On the one hand, shipping it is, in some ways, the kinder option.  But then again, in Medieval, Touga can still get his flirt on from time to time without converting the relationship to a romance, and some of the "platonic" interactions are pretty suggestive.  Like "honor friendship," and what happened while I was scouring the castle for someone for Touga to eavesdrop on:

http://imageshack.us/a/img13/889/screenshot10hj.jpg

Can we say, "shifting standards of romance and sexuality"?  That's a "rough-house contest of strength," by the way, and to top it off, Touga won.  Twice.

I love it when I don't even have to tell them to do these things. emot-dance

Then Touga whipped out his SUBTLETY.

http://imageshack.us/a/img96/8374/screenshot12pg.jpg

Then finally, finally, Touga found someone that wouldn't throw his rose on the floor and stomp on it.

http://imageshack.us/a/img855/5927/screenshot13my.jpg

She might not be pretty, but up until this point, playing Touga was like trying to ride a bicycle with square tires.  Up a hill.  But with his licentiousness sated, he became much more manageable and things turned a corner.

http://imageshack.us/a/img843/6280/screenshot14uf.jpg

Maybe not the best corner...

http://imageshack.us/a/img18/686/screenshot20cu.jpg

Yes, Touga.  Take a ride in the Akio car.  That'll fix everything. emot-rolleyes

So what was the next step in his SUBTLE plot?

http://imageshack.us/a/img826/4138/screenshot15uz.jpg

Fishing.  I kid you not, fishing.

And throwing meat for the Pit Beast.

http://imageshack.us/a/img4/5294/screenshot16jb.jpg

And being SUPER SNEAKY.

http://imageshack.us/a/img197/6742/screenshot18s.jpg

Maybe it's a metaphor for something?

http://imageshack.us/a/img16/53/screenshot21kz.jpg

Oh, dear.  Touga, you're supposed to manipulate someone else into doing these sorts of things.

Also breaking someone out of the stocks.

http://imageshack.us/a/img10/1143/screenshot22ng.jpg

At which point, Touga went back to being the Spy of Fail.

http://imageshack.us/a/img805/5817/screenshot23e.jpg

When even the uneducated constable thinks you're an idiot, you really want to reconsider your life choices.

He was able to find the child, and the kid wasn't even hiding in the cemetery!  No, he was hiding from Touga, 'cause he thought Touga was scary.  Think again, kid, think again.

At the end of the day, we even have enough resources to build another Hero building.

http://imageshack.us/a/img29/7990/screenshot25qc.jpg

You can almost see him think:  "I wonder how many people I can fit inside the smithy before I light it on fire.  A hundred?  But this is the dung ages.  I'm not sure there's even a hundred people in this village."

Mikage's traits are Scholarly and Loves Family (the latter might exist primarily for ironic purposes) and his Fatal Flaw is Cruel.  You'll notice that the Blacksmith is another one of those professions with insufficiently fabulous outfits.  I did my best, but it's not great, and it's not gonna be great.

Basically, I'm tired of the beginner gear.

Next time: Akio + peace talks.  Do I even wanna know?

I did see some Medieval hair conversions for Sims 3. They looked a little awkward compared to the other stuff, but still.

Lol, Sims 2. While some people dreaded all the changes they were making in Sims 3, I was dreading the things that wouldn't change. Like the ugly hairstyles.
Well, I do enjoy not having to download hundreds of recolors in case I ever need that specific shade of blonde. emot-tongue So my main problem with the Sims creator in Sims 3 is that it takes forever to make sims (though I don't really mind). And since Sims 3 still has some awkward color choices, it's nice to be easily able to change them.

Gotta love Touga's subtelty. emot-biggrin And slutty sims are always the most fun. emot-tongue

I've been thinking, on and off, over the Thanksgiving holiday (we had two, one with a whole herd of Chinese exchange students who are living with a family friend) whether, based on this thread, I could recommend the game in good faith.  I've tried to make it sound fun and entertaining, and have thus cut out a lot of the sections that are like, "and then Akio spent three whole days faffing about getting boar meat and not being able to get into his sister's pants."  And then again, sometimes it is fun and entertaining all on its own.  The things that are fun and entertaining here aren't staged.  I'm not interpreting them in a way they didn't happen.

If you are considering making a purchase, I would very much recommend watching this video.  I don't agree with it 100%: there can still be escapism in a game without changing the trappings to more fantastical ones.

But EAxis does seem to be under the impression that the mechanics it uses to operate the Sims themselves will, without the aid of any kind of contextualization, create a narrative and a sense of humanity and it really, really doesn't.  If you play too long, you start noticing that they fall somewhat in the uncanny valley: they go about their lives with a semblance of normality, but on some core level, they lack the capacity to care.  Events do not, ultimately, affect them.  They cannot grow restless and discontent with a job that aligns badly with their personality or aspirations, or a lack of meaningful relationships.  And, from time to time, this can be very disconcerting.

In this regard, I rather prefer Medieval.  There's a certain irony about a lot of the flavor text that makes the game seem less like a horribly flawed attempt at reality itself and more like a comment on that reality.  There's a humor to it that was largely absent in Sims 3 as it shipped (it might be more present in the expansion packs) and rather than setting the player loose to try and project a story onto crudely animated puppets, it gives you some context for the "story" and often adds writing to give some dimension to the Sims themselves rather than pretending that the AI mechanics would suffice to do this.

That said, it is possible for the player to provide the context that will lend any Sims game with the emotional core that it lacks.  And SKU is awesome for that.  I haven't tried it on Sims 3 proper (I suspect that it would take forever for me to set the town up to my satisfaction, and as I've said, my game isn't particularly stable) but it really is fun to try and make decisions based on how I think the characters would act in the strange, strange situations they end up in and watching the Sims act in ways that are (or are not) congruous with the characters they are meant to represent.

And "impossible to catch koi" goes on my list of things to make mods for once I suck less at programming.  Maybe make it like one of those event-things for like, the boxes when they're fishing?  Sorry, that doesn't make any sense unless you really know the ins and outs of Sims 3.

Lurv wrote:

I did see some Medieval hair conversions for Sims 3. They looked a little awkward compared to the other stuff, but still.

Lol, Sims 2. While some people dreaded all the changes they were making in Sims 3, I was dreading the things that wouldn't change. Like the ugly hairstyles.
Well, I do enjoy not having to download hundreds of recolors in case I ever need that specific shade of blonde.  So my main problem with the Sims creator in Sims 3 is that it takes forever to make sims (though I don't really mind). And since Sims 3 still has some awkward color choices, it's nice to be easily able to change them.

Gotta love Touga's subtelty.  And slutty sims are always the most fun.

Yeah, Medieval really has a rather different art style, for all the similarities with garden-variety with Sims 3.  Converting the hairstyles properly would take ages.

I REMEMBER THE TEN THOUSAND COLORS OF BLONDE.  There was one site, Garden of Shadows, I think, that had a somewhat standardized set of hair colors, (lots of them were NEON) I forget what it was called, and there were like, three shades of blonde.  I'm so happy they found a way around that with the customizable coloring.  Now it they could just implement the same system for skin pigments.

Aren't they?  Trying to maintain love dodecahedrons is tons of fun, watching the fallout when they collapse is tons of fun. school-devil

(Well, I don't know how guilty Medieval is about this.)

As a playground for interior design, it's a bucket of laughs, and as a playhouse for moderately-simulated dolls it's quite adequate.  But no matter how active your imagination, your Sims will never love you, and if you try to love them, you will only feel their cold, dead gaze slowly stripping away any sense of joy from your soul.  And modding in better eyes doesn't help.

But Awesomemod.  YES.

In general, my impression is that Medieval is significantly less borked than garden-flavor Sims 3.  I think it's only crashed on me, like, once or twice.  Sims 3 crashes pretty much every time I play.  I haven't used the quit button in, like, ages.

But now to your irregularly-scheduled entertainment!

http://imageshack.us/a/img89/2439/screenshot2qjl.jpg

Oh, game.  When will you realize that King Akio (I forgot to check if he's had a title upgrade) can't just ask his scouts for information.  He has to seduce it out of them.

http://imageshack.us/a/img5/5374/screenshot4ss.jpg

His Eloquent trait also gives him the capacity to "pontificate poignantly,"  read: spew pretentious bullshit while gesticulating wildly.

http://imageshack.us/a/img255/7936/screenshot3rl.jpg

So in character!

Then we have our regularly scheduled rounds of screw (with) everyone...

http://imageshack.us/a/img717/2484/screenshot5lkg.jpg

As a side note: this (or rather, the horizontal mamba that followed) did lead to another child.  A girl.  I'm calling her Mamiya, for lack of another boy.

http://imageshack.us/a/img189/5751/screenshot6qr.jpg

And this did not lead to any children, because this is the Dark Ages.  You really think they'd have come up with same-sex conception by then?

That done, Akio, still no closer to actually, you know, holding the peace conference, gets a new sword!

http://imageshack.us/a/img571/7859/screenshot9iz.jpg

What do you do when you get a new sword?

http://imageshack.us/a/img255/9821/screenshot12tk.jpg

You use it to beat the shit out of Touga.  Could've killed him, or anyone, really, but no one's done anything kill-worthy just yet.

The sword promptly broke, so Akio had to seduce some more people into telling him that it had something to do with the warring (or near-warring) pirates and merchants of the nearby Tredony and Aarbyville, and I don't have pictures of that, because if I took a picture every time Akio had to seduce someone, it would just get tedious.

So he decides to host a peace conference, and heads down to the town square.

http://imageshack.us/a/img31/7450/screenshot13gs.jpg

Hey, Mikage, you got any swords that don't suck and won't break, like, instantly?  No?  Dang.

Then he... samples the wares of the two... greeters he could employ at the castle to... ease the international tensions.

One is clearly a whore.

http://imageshack.us/a/img90/1075/screenshot16aj.jpg

The other... is also clearly a whore!

http://imageshack.us/a/img189/3281/screenshot18yb.jpg

(Prince Gentian the Neglected also makes a cameo appearance.)

Akio goes with the rose-sniffing whore, because while he's fine with it either way, he likes to present a facade of classical glamour and overt symbolism.  And pink-ass up there just ain't cuttin' it with the classical glamour.

Oh, look, birds!

http://imageshack.us/a/img853/540/screenshot19nv.jpg

Another way to waste massive amounts of time in this game, which will henceforth never be mentioned again, probably.  Just assume that, like, everyone is constantly either using a hawk to hunt or a parrot to hunt for treasure.

Next, Akio goes to pick out music for the peace talks.  Dancing ensues.

http://imageshack.us/a/img402/2940/screenshot21vo.jpg

Sims Medieval has, like, the best dancing.  No kidding.  It's hilariously dorky AND atmospherically accurate!  I can't find any particularly good videos of it on YouTube, unfortunately, and am not really equipped to make one of my own.

Later on, Akio heads to the monastery to pick up well water to make "Mysterical Mortar" with one of the things that I did not know what to do with from the treasure chest.  Saonji's there, doing the "wax on, wax off" prayer.

http://imageshack.us/a/img252/3531/screenshot22b.jpg

And Touga's in Saonji's room, failing at swordplay.

http://imageshack.us/a/img525/382/screenshot23ed.jpg

That practice dummy is laughing at you, Touga, laughing, and it has every right to.

Akio takes a bath in preparation for these... peace talks.

http://imageshack.us/a/img585/6545/screenshot24nf.jpg

And then I don't take any pictures of them, because there's really nothing to see.  Akio reads some declarations, gets a parrot and an interrogation chair...

http://imageshack.us/a/img89/3213/screenshot26np.jpg

I don't think it's really his style, even the "persuade" option.

And then everyone ended up passed out on the floor, only unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of it.  The one really entertaining moment from this danged quest (it took, like twice as long as the others, and this is the one where Akio spent three days getting boar meat and little else) and I didn't get a picture of it.  Figures.

The end!

Time for a new sim:

http://imageshack.us/a/img689/923/screenshotnr.jpg

Juri is a merchant so... expect not to see very much of her, because merchants are a pain in the ass to play.  Their quests and responsibilities are boring as heck.

I think the creation of Sim-Juri went quite well.  I'm really happy with her facial features, and the merchant clothes options work really nicely.  Her traits are Haggler and Adventurous, and her Fatal Flaw is Morose.  And I think there's a glitch here somewhere, because I did not give her soulless black holes for eyes.

Next time: Akio makes Touga do pointless shit, pretends it isn't pointless!

Oh, and there are things needing input!

I think the way to get non-combat classes to be able to duel is to make them either pirates or guildsmen.  I've got a quest that I think will still be available for the episode after next that would make someone a pirate, and... well, I guess I'll just take it from there.  It might be tutorial-tastic, so I'll understand the mechanic better.  But the important thing is: which SKU characters should be pirates, and which should be guildsmen?  And for Akio, Utena, Touga, and Anthy, the question is irrelevant.  Akio, Utena, and Touga have/will have combat classes already, and Anthy wouldn't use a sword anyways.

Re: SKU Sims

I would think Juri would have the Solitary trait rather than Haggler.  Juri pays full price.

If a guildsman is what it sounds like -- a person belonging to a professional association -- then it would seem natural for the Student Council to be guildsmen and everyone else to be pirates.

And thank you for the review of the game!  It sounds like Sims 3 is a "you get out what you put in" kind of game, which can be good.  But I already have Minecraft for that right now. emot-smile

My favorite part of Sims is the sim creator, though. I love using it to make my OCs. Then I might or might not play with them afterwards.

Kita, you gotta do more! Your medival SKU sims are awesome! emot-biggrin

Speaking of which, I recently got sims 3 working again on my comp and I've remade all my sku sims. They live in Bridgport now.

And Kozue turned out to be a proper party animal! When the bouncer refused to let her in the club, she flirted with him. When he rejected her amorous advances, she got in a bar brawl with him and kicked his butt. emot-rofl

I found a really cute new hairstyle for Anthy!

And I completely redid my Juri sim. Finally happy with her now she's got the long sexy hair she deserves. And somehow she's already become a celebrity, despite the fact all she's done is gone out and chat with a few people. Guess that's Juri-sama for you.

Well, I know in Late Night, you get fame points from impressing them, anyway. So if you don't want the paparazzi to follow you around, never befriend a celebrity.

I'm guessing there's more fame stuff in Showtime, but I don't own that one.

Re: SKU Sims

I've actually had some of these sitting around for ages, but I was too busy being... productive to put them to any use.  Let's see if I can figure out what the heck was going on!

http://imageshack.us/a/img145/2066/screenshot2gz.jpg

First up, Akio has a very important task for Touga!  And this is clearly the best way to tell him about it.

The task?  Run around the kingdom finding random junk.  Kaloo, kalay, 'tis Bric-a-Brack day!

But first, Prince/Princess Mamiya grows up, gets proper clothes!

http://imageshack.us/a/img577/2269/screenshot4jb.jpg

Have I mentioned lately how much the kids' clothes kinda suck?  No?  Well, they do.

Touga, not sure he's really up to the task of collecting a bunch of pointless shit, and in major need of a time sink, goes to talk to his "best friend."  Who he's never friends with when I leave them to their own devices for more than a few minutes.  Deep-seated issues?  Jealousy?  Saionji not really being a fan of Touga's constant suggestive remarks about his ankles?  I dunno.  But I'm quickly coming to the conclusion that MedievalSim!Touga kinda fails at all interpersonal relationships.

http://imageshack.us/a/img843/5618/screenshot12kl.jpg

If I remember correctly, they're "honoring friendship" here.  What level of irony, sarcasm, or honesty they're operating on is up to interpretation.

And Saionji + Public Speaking?

http://imageshack.us/a/img233/39/screenshot3wts.jpg

Yeah, that's going about as well as you'd expect.

http://imageshack.us/a/img62/7113/screenshot28wi.jpg

Dude, just give up.  Watching you do this is painful.  And hilarious.

http://imageshack.us/a/img19/6652/screenshot16kh.jpg

Touga tries to break someone out of the stocks, take oh-god-why-does-it-keep-happening!

http://imageshack.us/a/img443/2651/screenshot18jo.jpg

*Snrk* emot-rofl

Meanwhile, Juri and Mikage keep handing packages back and forth.

http://imageshack.us/a/img850/1619/screenshot19j.jpg

Do I even wanna know?

Getting back on track, Touga goes to make some poison or something.

http://imageshack.us/a/img163/8625/screenshot24kg.jpg

And turns into a fabulously pink ghost-thing for extra SUBTLETY.

http://imageshack.us/a/img513/3374/screenshot33yf.jpg

Well, it's fabulously pink most of the time.  Speaking of which, his bed needs a recolor.  Hmm.

Shortly thereafter, he gets mauled by a bear.

http://imageshack.us/a/img203/8696/screenshot34wy.jpg

Maybe prayer will help?

http://imageshack.us/a/img534/2344/screenshot35u.jpg

Then he has a "moment" with some random chick who may or may not be the ruler of a neighboring kingdom.

http://imageshack.us/a/img201/4481/screenshot23x.jpg

And promptly catches something from her.  Which turns out to be "Burning Loins."

http://imageshack.us/a/img62/1558/screenshot25fb.jpg

emot-rofl

Touga is now a disease vector!  I wonder how many people he can infect?

http://imageshack.us/a/img441/966/screenshot31us.jpg

That's one...

http://imageshack.us/a/img837/8029/screenshot32af.jpg

two...

http://imageshack.us/a/img405/7623/screenshot37d.jpg

three...

And Akio (didn't get a picture) makes four, plus another hub of... activity.  SKU, Plague Simulator!

http://imageshack.us/a/img22/7058/screenshot2dmm.jpg

Touga has a new hobby!  Collapsing and passing out from illness on the cold, hard ground.

And just remember, kids:

http://imageshack.us/a/img341/9117/screenshot4fo.jpg

The house always wins.

Even if you give them "Burning Loins" for the trouble.

Touga has a new inquisition chair!

http://imageshack.us/a/img69/1004/screenshot12ri.jpg

He even had to sell his bathtub to get it.  emot-frown

I don't think it really suits him.

Back to the monastery for a "deep conversation." (have I mentioned how much I love the social options in medieval?)

http://imageshack.us/a/img827/4884/screenshot18ss.jpg

Where Saionji is working on his automatic writing.

http://imageshack.us/a/img839/3333/screenshot16lk.jpg

He never looks at the page, and it's totally a thing sims do in Medieval.

And Touga... prays.  Yeah.

http://imageshack.us/a/img854/7599/screenshot19np.jpg

Maybe I shoulda kept him agnostic.

In other news, the monastery seems to be a local hot-spot for Sims of Interest.

http://imageshack.us/a/img138/1566/screenshot23zj.jpg

Mamiya gets his/her ass kicked by some random kid...

http://imageshack.us/a/img255/7381/screenshot24ha.jpg

Juri and Mikage might be friends now...

http://imageshack.us/a/img846/8830/screenshot25b.jpg

And Anthy, true to form, is screwing around and not paying any attention.

To finally put an end to this insufferably long quest, Touga scrounges in some bushes:

http://imageshack.us/a/img96/4809/screenshot26dn.jpg

And, for about five seconds, sits on the throne.

http://imageshack.us/a/img35/3051/screenshot27er.jpg

Illusions of power?  Check.

He finds Akio's teddy bear (do NOT want to know) and the quest ends.

Next up, we get a new building!  One we really, really need: the Clinic.

Too bad the new hero sim is TOTALLY NOT GOING TO DIE.

http://imageshack.us/a/img593/3149/screenshot28h.jpg

I saved a whole shade of pasty-ass skin for him!  Too bad there's not much I can do about mutant forelocks.  His traits are Chivalrous and Eloquent (I dunno, I was pretty much just picking them out of a hat, and Chivalrous is almost the default for SKU sims) and his fatal flaw is Weak Constitution.  Yeah.  This is gonna be fun.

I'm not too picky about these sorts of things, given the time period, but that, sir, is a dress. school-sherlock  Though it is not the dressiest dress he could be wearing.  I would have gone with a dressier one (it almost worked better, really) but this had... certain desirable secondary features.  Get some leaves!

Next time, Ruka sorts out everyone's romantic issues.  No, really, I'm sure he'll do a wonderful job.  And I'll have to come up with some sort of reverse-drinking game around how long it takes him to start coughing up a lung.

Re: SKU Sims

(The last post was massive, and I can foresee them getting longer as it goes, quests tend to do that, but this is gonna be a short one.)

GET SOME LEAVES!

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7696/screenshotzdh.jpg

And then, of course, seek help from a responsible adult.

http://imageshack.us/a/img805/8610/screenshot3mg.jpg

Erm, no.  Taking a ride in the Akio Car doesn't count.

(I'm pretty much just fishing for plague here.  Don't catch it, though.)

And then he runs into an old friend.

http://imageshack.us/a/img37/5157/screenshot5kt.jpg

As he, like Akio, has the "Eloquent" trait, he can also milk the giant cow while spewing pretentious bullshit.  In character? Probably not.  Silly?  Very much so.

http://imageshack.us/a/img541/2585/screenshot6rt.jpg

He can also "comfort with well-chosen words."  Um... okay.

And Anthy's still around here somewhere, though I haven't had much to do with her in a while.

http://imageshack.us/a/img201/1056/screenshot7zq.jpg

GET SOME... leeches?

http://imageshack.us/a/img189/2161/screenshot8og.jpg

Have I mentioned that Ruka's title is "Bloodletter"?

His next encounter with Juri doesn't go so smoothly.

http://imageshack.us/a/img404/2520/screenshot10bb.jpg

And I'm glad that, whatever nastiness sims can get up to in Medieval (murder, poisoning one another, dark magic, alcoholism) the recipient of unwanted advances has the last say in the matter.

http://imageshack.us/a/img687/3923/screenshot11wy.jpg

This next picture exists for pure WTF.  I had Ruka examine every SKU sim who came into the clinic to help keep them all healthy, and well, this happened:

http://imageshack.us/a/img811/4092/screenshot12vh.jpg

Stay classy, I guess?

Well, Ruka's been sick for a while, but the lung-hacking-up hasn't showed up because I've been keeping him busy, and most symptoms of illness are idle animations.  But now he has a moment to himself.

http://imageshack.us/a/img703/9357/screenshot14pg.jpg

So the inevitable happens.

http://imageshack.us/a/img853/1710/screenshot15j.jpg

"You're not really the one I wanted to do this for, but here's a seashell to help you get over your nasty breakup."

http://imageshack.us/a/img338/7866/screenshot17gr.jpg

Yup, you look like shit.

And guess who comes calling?

http://imageshack.us/a/img4/2482/screenshot18in.jpg

It's not like we couldn't see it coming.

http://imageshack.us/a/img19/4435/screenshot19ec.jpg

The Grim Reaper is awesome in Medieval, by the way.

http://imageshack.us/a/img577/1008/screenshot20j.jpg

If I was that dude, I would so totally be fangirling like, ten times as hard as that dude is.

The quest is failed, so no new hero buildings.  I could make Wakaba if I really wanted to, but I'm gonna be lazy and save her for later.

Next time: Anthy frees a genie!  But don't worry, she's not doing it for the genie's sake.

Re: SKU Sims

And now... Incest funtimes!

http://imageshack.us/a/img145/3107/screenshot3yh.jpg

There's chimes, too.  I'm hoping it's a boy so I can call it Dios and wash my hands of all this.

There's a genie to be released from a bottle Anthy fished out of the well, but first, screwing around!  Because I swear, in Medieval, that's the key to success: get your sim in a good mood, waste time until the quest meter's in platinum, and then do the quest tasks.

Uh, Saionji, I really don't think she's impressed by your hula skills.

Or maybe not!  Well, this is Anthy we're talking about.  It's totally believable that she'd be just really into hula dancing or something.

But, we have a genie to free!  Time to go research!

... and be pregnant, apparently.

It's a boy!

Thank goodness.  Unfortunately, I don't have any of the traits written down.

Next up, time to go steal some souls!

http://imageshack.us/a/img6/1931/screenshot10cn.jpg

Oh, you thought I was kidding.

http://imageshack.us/a/img826/8800/screenshot11ka.jpg

Saionji looks waaaay to casual about the proceedings.

http://imageshack.us/a/img829/2614/screenshot12yz.jpg

And really?  Proposing to the chick who just stole your soul?  I'm sure that NOTHING will go wrong here. emot-rolleyes

http://imageshack.us/a/img811/8472/screenshot13ly.jpg

Cookin' up a brew to free the genie...

http://imageshack.us/a/img585/3739/screenshot15hg.jpg

And Anthy gets what she really wanted out of the quest: a new, less sucky staff and the Chaos rune, which unlocks tons more magical abilities.  Altruism?  What altruism?

Lastly, there's a new hero sim!

http://imageshack.us/a/img442/954/screenshot16o.jpg

Yes, that's Miki playing a lute.  He's gonna be doing a lot of that.  Also writing plays and reciting sappy poetry.  I will make sure the poetry is sappy.  Bards are fun, so he'll probably get a lot of screenshottime.

His Traits are Good and Scholarly, and his Fatal Flaw is Cowardly.  I'm not sure how he came out, I wasn't really satisfied, but this picture doesn't look so bad.  Then again, I'm really happy with Juri-sim, but none of the pictures of her look that great.  But the outfit?  That I'm happy with.

Next time, Anthy and Miki... do stuff.  I actually forget what the quest is.  Probably has something to do with animals.

Re: SKU Sims

You know, Kita-Ysabell, it's all your fault that I now have The Sims Medieval installed. I can see so much time wasted in my future emot-mad

Thanks for the screenshots, they're hilarious!
