The Overhyped Events Thread

You know this.

A new movie/video game is coming out, and you are psyched. You wait, lapping up every single bit of new info, speculate with friends and fans, and wait some more.

Then the day comes, and you watch/play it. After all that waiting, speculating, gossiping, whatever, it turns out that you have been bushwacked.

Congradulations; you have been a victim of "overhype".

I've had alot of these experiences, and I'm wondering if anyone else here has any stories.

I actually prefer things be overhyped.  If they still wow me, that's excellent.  If they don't measure up to the hype, I stil got to enjoy the entertainment of the hyping itself.  So much better than loving the hell out of something only to see/hear nothing but hatred or apathy about it everywhere else.

Re: The Overhyped Events Thread

Kingdom Hearts 2. It was supposed to be so very amazing and awesome and fansqueal-inducing. Then I got the game. After waiting out a 3.5 hour intro, you got to the real story, and it was kinda... really crap. The voice acting was atrocious (the actual acting as well as the choices for the voices), and the only reason I play it as often as I do (which actually is pretty rare) is for a couple areas and some characters.

Wasn't remotely worth the money. emot-frown

I second this statement. The prime example being Halo 3. That game was supposed to be the greatest shooter ever made, and be near God like in everyway, well it wasn't at all Godlike, but all the hype, and the excitement from the midnight launches made up for any let downs I had with the final product. Sitting outside Gamestop watching Red Vs Blue on a big TV with dozens and dozens of fellow fans, and getting free Energy Drinks given to us is a great way to spend the night. I get to meet new people, drink till I'm sick, and the go home and kill people all night long. The single player was a big disappointment, but the online play was well worth all the wait.

Barack Obama?

Actually, I haven't had this experience very much.  Neverwinter Nights 2, I guess, would be the one that stands out.  All the excitement over its release, and it turns out 90% of computers at the time couldn't play it without it being unbearably jerky because they never bothered playtesting it on older machines.  Oh, and all the game-breaking bugs that you had to wait months for them to iron out via patches.

And Star Wars Episode I, of course, but I figure that goes without saying.

ARGH! That movie is pure evil. I hated it and hated it and hated it. I went to the movie theatre with my dad, and felt bad for him afterwards for having to sit down and watch that with me. Jar Jar Binks needs to die a painful death, and everything about it just screamed young young kid's movie. It wasn't awful, but in terms of Star Wars I can't even watch it. It's got a little better since I first saw it ,but I still don't like it.

That was what, 30 some odd years of hype? It could never have lived up to it, even if Lucas hadn't directed it.

For me, the South Park movie, and the Family Guy Star Wars Special. The South Park movie neither offended me nor made me laugh as much as everyone assured me it would. I loved the musical numbers -specifically the opening Redneck Mountain Town and Satan's number, because of the Disney beatdown. But those are the only things I even really remember about the movie. And the Family Guy one was just....eh. It bored me actually. The whole time I watched it, I was like "Eh. When's it get funny?" And Family Guy is my secret vice. UTTERLY SECRET.

Also, I never see the third movie. I haven't seen the third Pirates of the Carribean movie, I haven't seen the third the Star Wars movie, I probably won't see the third Mummy movie (what's really funny to me, actually, is that I've worked in the vicinity of all the rides based on those movies, lol). I did see the third Spiderman movie, but it was under extreme duress. Personally, the only things I can think of that even remotely lived up to thier hype for me, were Juno, The Royal Tenenbaums and Pan's Labyrinth.

For me the more something is hyped, the less likely I will be to see it. Yeah, the new batman flick looks cool, yeah I like Heath Ledger, and yeah, from an academic standpoint, the viral adverting/game is wicked awesome. But honestly, I've seen so much of it, been exposed to so much of it, that I'm utterly uninterested in the movie. I really wanted to see The Darjeeling Limited, but A, it didn't show anywhere remotely near here, and B, it was super hyped on a lot of pages that I like to check out. I still haven't seen Iron Man. I probably won't see it.

Although, that being said, I still REALLY wanna see Wall-E  (partially because my mom is so keen to see it and I'd love to take her) and Hellboy 2. I wonder though, with some of the projects that are coming up in hollywood, how will they handle the adverting? Like The Watchmen. I still kind of want to see V for Vendetta, but I heard about the way the end of the movie was changed and I was all "...nice going Wachowski brothers. You couldn't keep fucking up your own Matrix shit?"

Pirates of the Caribbean. Seriously. In my head, it's just that one movie. And it took several watchings of even that one for me to fully love it, too. emot-gonk

OMG I loved the hype for Halo 3. I really did. I thought that the Halo3-hype was, quite possible, one of the best moments of my life. RvB is hysterical (go Caboose!).

Too bad that the campaign was a load of BS.

Re: The Overhyped Events Thread

Oh, actually, I have to say Harry Potter as well. I've read all the books, and though they were decent enough I never got the hype. At all. But I thought it worth mentioning because I kind of looked forward to the last book (partly because once it was over, it was over) but oh GOD the epilogue. My sister knew when I'd read it because of the thump on the wall separating our bedrooms as I threw it. emot-rofl She hadn't even read any of them, she'd just been told what the last sentence was and knew I'd toss the toys. school-devil Still, I'd have lined up for the book if I'd been anywhere near Russell Howard that night. Sounds like he had a good time. Mind you, I was living in England at the time, it's just that Oxford's city centre is full of crackheads and junkies from nightfall to mid-morning, so I tended to avoid it like the plague. I got enough of that shit at work. emot-gonk

Re: The Overhyped Events Thread

let's see, which movies/books/whatever...

1. Hannibal: ok, my mistake, I read the book first. Of course i literally dashed into the movie, just to become extra-disappointed. That's why it is on rank 1. I bet they simply ERASED half of the book and also a lot of characters.

2. Hostel: what kind of shit was that anyway? oo production with Tarantino= were they kidding? O__o; i didn'T even know if it was porn with blood or splatter with porn emot-gonk and your FSK 18 I swear, I thought it would be for age 16 ._o too less amputated bodyparts and whatnot >_>

3. Goth - Requiem for a dream: Ok this one should be on rank 1 but oh well. it's SO trashy, so FILLED with cliché and SO bad and cheap and ridiculous... i don'T even know if it's better to laugh or to cry. It was more a moment like "OOOOk... and i wasted 5 euro for this shit." *turns off tv*

4. Karin Slaughter's 3rd novel (i don't know the english title). that was really like: Whoa... and that was the famous author of Belladonna? That's bad. No. Worse. Nope. THE WORST. But thanks god her actual novel is better again...

5. A special cd. Skeletal Family's SAKURA. I watched the new formation live this year in leipzig and I stared in awe. The show was perfect, also the music was. I bought their CD and i listened to it just once before i threw it into the garbage where it belongs. It sounds like everything is in mono and the new singer (who was amazingly awesome live), had a kind of BAD DAY on the cd. Horrible I say.

Re: The Overhyped Events Thread

I agree with MissMocha and satryeyes, IMHO, the most overhyped thing of the new millenium thusfar, the Star Wars prequel trilogy.  ::shudder::  At least Lucas redeemed himself a bit with the last movie.

Another overhyped movie, Sweeney Todd.  I'm sorry, I'm a B'Way geek, and Michael Cerveris' Todd beats the pants off of Depp's Todd any day of the week.  Burton had some great art direction, but bad casting.

As far as hype goes.  I'm putting in another voice for Sweeney Todd, despite the combined love anD fangirling over Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall.  Johnny and Helena can't sing.  Simple as that.

And for the end of Harry Potter.  Basically JK going "I MAKE ALL YOUR FANFICTION AU NOW"!

Actually, I really enjoyed both endings. The movie is totally worth it, and while the final vision is a little brighter than what is in the comic, it still fits very nicely and doesn't feel out of place at all. Just treat them as two separate entities. The movie IS NOT a true adaptation to the comic book and does not try to be. just keep that in mind and I'm sure you'll love it.

I didn't like Juno as much as everyone said I would :\ I'm gonna agree with all the KH people as well. KH . . . not so great. You know what else didn't live up to the hype? The musical Spring Awakening. I was like "um . . . okay this isn't revolutionary."

It's nice to know there are sane people out there who can see past the big names in a movie and go down to the problems of the film. It's a musical. You cannot sing. You should not be in the musical, regardless of it being a movie musical. Fuck you Tim Burton for ruining one of the finest pieces of art that has ever hit the Broadway stage.

Of course that's just my opinion. emot-aaa

Know what DID live up to the hype? Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. :DDD

Re: The Overhyped Events Thread

Hm. The last Harry Potter book was disappointing for me, except for all the Snape bits. For me, it was a great big death-fest, and while that's probably canonically accurate [it is -- it's in the book], I didn't find it enjoyable -- just upsetting. And then the epilogue made me cringe. A lot.

And this was a year ago, but season two of Heroes was also disappointing. I was expecting the wonder and the creativity of season one, but I got something really strange. And they reverse-stole-my-idea for a comic book with the virus. :[ The best part about season two was the last three episodes before the strike. They got rid of West, which was the best thing they could have done, other than not having him at all.

LOL BITCHING. 8D

I did use to be a BIG Axel fan, don't get me wrong, but I very very very quickly got burnt out because of the billions of peices of fanart and fanfiction for him.  And it was all AkuRoku, which I don't care for.  And if your even WHISPERED AxelxLarxene, they would eat your face off in rage.

I don't dislike him as much as I dislike some characters, but I certainly can't call myself a fan in any sense. I mean, I know that Marly ordered him to do it, that's really something I could have gotten over in time. But the damn fangirls have to place him as a god among men. And cripes, the AkuRoku! It haunts me! I understand the pairing, and I really don't have qualms about it, but seriously. If he wasn't fucking created to be fangirl fodder, I don't know what he is.

Cosplay we shall! But you'll have to be Marluxia, because I'm pretty sure I'm the taller one. emot-wink

Speaking of overhype... I'm a little worried about being inadvertantly disappointed by The Dark Knight (the new batman movie). I'm doing my best to keep my expectations level but it's hard to do when all I hear is "Everyone already loves this movie and you should too even though it isn't released yet."

I'm just saying.

Yeah, really. "Heath Ledger died for his performance, so you know it's going to be awesome!" What kind of logic is that? Who talks about Bela Lugosi's Ghoul Man as being his finest performance? Or Orson Welles as Unicron.
