This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Agree or Disagree, live action casting calls..

Let's start with Akio, because why not?

Now here are my picks, and Giovanna do NOT school-eng101 emot-gonk me because of this but..

Ok...for the show here's my pics:

1. Sendhil Ramamurthy as the adult version of Akio whereas...
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0707983/

2. Sanjaya Malakar as the teenage version of Akio and/or the movie version of him.

Next person who replies to this must state whether they agree or disagree, and/or must also state who they would like to see play whom in a live action version of Utena.

Re: Agree or Disagree, live action casting calls..

I think Sendhil has the looks, but I'd like to hear his voice, too, if possible.
Utena, Utena, I don't know if you want a western cast or a Japanese cast. But, for a western cast, I feel that Keira Knightley has the potential to portray Utena's attitude, both the Prince as well as the Princess aspect of the character. But some people might disagree and find her too "old" for a student and/or too feisty to be Utena.
Another candidate I had in mind is Leelee Sobieski, who portrayed Joan of Arc before. But, she can be Juri, too, in my opinion. According to IMDB, Leelee's dad is a descendant of a Polish king dated back in  1674 to 1696. So, we have nobility there. emot-smile

Both actresses, in my opinion, are pretty good as either Utena or Juri. Hm... maybe Leelee is more Utena than Keira (Now imagining the two dueling each other as Utena and Juri respectively. "Bansho Light. Mosaico Light.... Jin, Gin, Shi, Ryoku, Seki, Sei, Goku! Jin, Gin, Shi, Ryoku, Seki, Sei, Goku!")

I'm having trouble finding "Anthy", but I think Aishwarya Rai is a good candidate for a Movie version of Anthy.

I still like my idea of Tougatsushi. Especially when Atsushi Sakurai was younger and had the long hair.. he's so beeyootiful. I 'shopped a photo of him to make him look like Touga, and it actually worked pretty well.

And in that photo, he's nearly got the perfect Touga hair.. it just needs to be red. As for how he could portray the role, well, Sakurai's far more sexual than, say, Gackt. So I dunno. And his voice is really seductive (*ahem* "Please me, oh yes..." It totally sounds like someone's doing him when he says that)... and he's just.. hawt. D: But I'm such a biased person. I have no idea if he can act or not, but I wouldn't expect a live version of SKU to really be that great anyway so why not just have a bunch of attractive people in it?

And yes, Sanjaya would be the most entertaining Movie!Akio ever.

Keira Knightley as Utena? Maybe that could work... but she does seem to have more of a feisty vibe than an innocent one. It's getting pretty hard to find those innocent tomboy types these days.

Yeah, that's why I think Leelee (<-even a descendant of a king) might make a better Utena when Keira makes a better Juri. Mm~ Miki... I think Hongo Kanata makes for a good Miki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hongo_Kanata

It's hard to find an effeminate young actor in the west...

I like that guy for Miki if the movie were done in Japan. I like Keira Knightley, but not for Juri. She's not intimidating enough to pull it off. I can believe her as Utena or even a passable Kozue.

Now, Laura Prepon(Donna on "That 70's Show") or Julia Stiles would make a good Juri.

Well, Utena I can agree, but Kozue? Mm... I would have thought Kirsten Dunst would be the one to pull it off (After watching Marie Antoinette, that is) And, Kirsten was also Claudia from "Interview with Vampire". She's got that Kozue attitude, alright. The kind that would hurt other people for the ONE person she loves.

Re: Agree or Disagree, live action casting calls..

hm... when it comes to Juri it's pretty difficult to get a nice actress. Kate Winslet played lesbian scenes before, would be a nice try... (if anyone knows "Heavenly creatures...")

but Angelina Jolie could also fit purrrfectly etc-wankgirl

Angelina as a redhead would be definitely an eyecatcher x>

Leaving aside the minor facts that he is dead and wasn't South Asian, the most perfect possible person to play Akio would have been Cary Grant.
