This is a static copy of In the Rose Garden, which existed as the center of the western Utena fandom for years. Enjoy. :)

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Hi everyone! I'm just starting to watch Utena and it's amazing! I originally watched because I heard about it from Steven Universe and also there are many gay/bi characters. Despite it being in a 90s anime style and having lots of stock animation, there's something really deep about it and the fillers are hilarious!
I can't stop watching it which is a little bad for junior year haha

My favorite character is Miki; he plays the piano like i do and is really relatable to me. The Sunlit Garden is a beautiful piece!

Aside from that i'm also really into art and fanart and music!
I want to learn more about RGU/SKU here and hope to get to know you all! emot-keke

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Yo. I go by "Ultima". I won't bore anyone with details about myself; I don't think it's important and that's not why I'm here. More importantly, I finished watching all of Utena a few weeks ago, and...wow. I'm always looking for something "more" in my anime, and all I can say is I'm sorry I didn't watch Utena sooner. After letting it marinate in my head for a while, it easily took a spot in my top 5 favorites and I'm now hopelessly obsessed. I just want to re-watch it like 10 more times (and I may have already started lol). At this point, I'm on a mission to pick up the DVD sets, music, and all the manga (and I don't even read manga). Despite the upcoming Blu-ray release in the US, the LE DVD sets look far too gorgeous to not pick up. I also watched the movie and read the movie-manga, both of which I enjoyed, but not as much as the series of course. Judging by comments I've seen in various places so far, I think the movie gets a little too much hate, but I can understand why. I just thought the biggest issue was its length.

I probably won't be posting here much, if at all after this, but at the very least I wanted to give my thanks to the people who put this site together as well as those who contributed the essays, art, and everything else. I love dedicated fansites like this, and the fact that there's a forum, too, is definitely awesome. I've read several of the essays in the "Analysis" section, and I'm grateful for them as they've contributed a lot to my overall appreciation and love of the show thanks to my newfound understanding. I'm personally really bad at (read: nigh-incapable of) reading into symbols and deeper meanings, so I'm always up to reading other people's interpretations as that usually helps me form theories of my own.

tl;dr: Utena is great. Site is great. Love you all. emot-dance etc-saiowank

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Hello! I've been coming here every so often for Utena stuff since I watched the show a couple years back, since you guys have a great collection of content here. It's so cool that this fansite has been around for so long - thank you to the people who've been maintaining it all this time!

I've wanted to play the Utena game myself since I read Dallbun's Let's Play on the forums a while back, but I figured it would never happen since I don't know a lick of Japanese. Then a few days ago I found out that there was a full translation finished!! And now I am finally signing myself up here so I can download the game and thank the people who worked on it. emot-biggrin

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Hi there everyone! Sooo Utena is no quick possibly my favorite anime - as of very recently. Around the start of last month I started Utena somewhat on a whim - it's a show I've vaguely been meaning to watch for a while but watching dat OP several times in a row made me just dive & watch the first episode. I knew that it was about a girl wanting to be a prince lesbians and involved duels but I really had no idea what I was in for. (I have vague recollections of imagining the show way differently when I first read up on it over a year or maybe two ago) I love LGBT romance so I was pretty excited for that & the promise of spurned gender roles.

So it was a slow journey and I watched 1-3 episodes a night (there were maybe 2 nights where I didn't watch any) but I finally finished the show back on the 23rd. I am just in love with this show & it's characters - I've had some of my own theories and interpretations of things & I thought this might be a good outlet. The sheer amount of Utena analysis things is almost overwhelming though (lol) and there are so many deviant ideas that I wonder where I'll fit in heh.

Alsooo...yesterday I watched Adolescence of Utena...at like 2 in the morning (great idea). I loved it but there's definitely a LOT I need to sift through lol. I've read a few of the things back at Empty Movement & also followed along with a few episode to episode/series reviews/analysis things. (Like a reddit thread following it - "Adventuresofcomicbookgirl"'s tumblr - a few other places)

So there ya are - here I am - and Hello!

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Hello!
Writing here is a fan from Russia!
Been used to have this anime as my absolute fave for about a decade now.
Have lurked on this forum often, and may have read all duscussions at some point - really enjoy reading disussions about such complex series like this.
After a couple of years away from this forum, I saw Dallbun translated so much stuff I've never even heard of before. This inspired me to register to say thanks, and maybe even add my word or 2 sometimes.
Thank you everybody responsible for this site and forum and content and translations, and everything. Utena wouldn't have been same without your efforts.

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Hello everyone!

It's lovely to find a place among other fans; I don't know anyone near me who enjoys Utena, and the posts I've read here so far are delightful. emot-smile

I first saw the show about ten years ago, let it fade, then fell in love with it all over again last year.  There's so much there that's inspiring, heart-wrenching, and thought-provoking, and I'm looking forward to joining in the discussions here.

Also, I finished my first piece of Utena fanfiction recently, and this site was an amazing help - both for useful materials (like analyses and scripts) and chuckles (from some of the discussion threads!).  So THANK YOU very much for making this little garden on the web!!

Um...Hello! My name is Julie, I'm from the US (east coast) and I've... never used a forum on anything before? I likely won't post much, but I've already enjoyed reading many of the posts here! Utena is very dear to my heart, and I'm currently rewatching it and soaking up the analysis (analysises? analyses?) that people have posted. So... yeah! Nice to meet everyone!

Hello!
I've just finished the anime, but I'm already revisiting episodes for all those things I overlooked the first time. I actually first started watching/heard about SKU because I came across this forum while browsing, so...I suppose thanks for inadvertently introducing me to something cool? It certainly is something that really defies the initial expectations one has.
:-)
I probably won't post very often, but I'll certainly enjoy reading all the interesting analyses here!

Hi All,

Gender is a weird and creepy construct, and Revolutionary Girl Utena is helping me better understand and expand my own gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation (which, although distinct from my gender identity and expression, is closely linked).

I am a philosophy Ph.D. student from New York with interests in feminism and decolonial thinking (is anyone else interested in or disturbed by the Western tropes, symbols, and narratives threaded throughout the show?)

In addition to the gender bending, androgyny, and queer and gender non-conforming relationships, I appreciate Revolutionary Girl Utena for its humor which is all-too-often forgotten or neglected in our serious and sterile Nolan-era of film-making.

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Hello! My name is Petra, I watched Utena a few years ago and really fell in love with it! It really means a lot to me, it made me open my eyes about lots of things... I like anime and manga and all that stuff and my all time favourite is Sailor Moon. I also love dolls like BJD's and I also like to draw and sing.
My favourite characters from Utena are Nanami, Wakaba and Anthy! I see a lot of myself in Nanami and Wakaba.
I'm sorry my introduction isn't that good, heh emot-keke; it's really hard to write about yourself. English isn't my first language so I apologize if anything I write comes off odd... (Tbh I am not good at writing even in my own language emot-tongue )

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Hi!! I discovered SKU a long time ago when I was in a Shoujo Manga obsession phase and I fell in love with the beautiful art and the strong, gender-defying, pink haired prince Utena. At age 14 I even cut my hair short like hers in Adolescence of Utena (since I wasn't allowed to dye it pink lol), and being mistaken for a boy didn't bother me because that happened to her as well. I wanted to be just like her and she was a very strong icon to me at the time, but things happened and I kind of just got away from it (and anime in general) for some time. But yesterday when I was tumblring(?) I found some pretty Utena fanart... then some pretty Utena cosplay... then some pretty Utena game screenshot with english translation- WAIT WHAT?! I was crazy at the time to play it so seeing it finally got translated got me into the mood for some revolution *badum tiss* I'm going to date the hell out of everyone in this flipping game, but especially that green haired bastard Saionji > : D Anyway, I still have the manga in my library, I shall read it all again and maybe I will even give the anime a 3rd chance... I never got past the first six episodes LOL But about me: I am a Graphic Design College Student, hoping to get into the illustration/concept art world, maybe do some animation, and art stuff in general! I love drawing fanarts of my favorite shows and games, and aside from SKU I also really enjoy Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball,Yu-Gi-Oh, Inuyasha and Death Note. There are also a bunch of mangas that I was into at the time that I should give the anime a go like D Gray Man, Vampire Knight, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, X 1994, Magic Knights Rayearth, Angelic Layer (I really loved CLAMP) and some others. And for games I really like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Dragon's Dogma... basically any RPG where I can kick ass and bang people LOL If anyone know of other games like this, do share emot-rofl I hope I didn't bore anyone with my post, and I hope I'm doing this whole post thing right because I NEVER post anything in forums at all, I feel very anxious about this kind of stuff, ha! And just for everyone's information, I do happen to have pink hair now. But is is 100% percent my natural hair color I swear emot-wink

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Hi everyone!
I'm a 20 yo girl from South Italy. This is my first time ever on a forum and I feel quite disoriented, but I really wanted to join here, so I'm happy like this. I'm not used at writing in English, so, if you find something strange written by me, don't have problem correcting me!
I'm a small girl who looks 16, I'm into majokko and a couple days ago I started watching the old Sailor Moon anime, since I've never watched it (I know it's quite strange, I know), because is an important piece of anime culture and because of the touch of Ikuhara. I love yuri, too. etc-love I like Neon Genesis Evangelion, the Fate franchise (actually I've played only to Stay Night and Hollow Ataraxia), Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, the Monogatari Series. I enjoy playing videogames but I'm really bad at it, so I haven't much experience. I prefer JRPG. I adore the Ace Attorney series, too!
I watched the Utena anime almost a year ago, after  y e a r s  of fear of anime longer than 26 episodes. I adored it and convinced the one who now is my boyfriend to watch it too (we love Touga). I'm happy I waited some years to watch, since the experience gained during studying and just growing gave me more keys for reading the story. Who knows what I'll discover on the next rewatches?
My favourite character are: Utena, Anthy, Wakaba, Touga and Juri.
After reading some discussions here, I fell in love with the atmosphere... Hope it's the beginning of a nice experience. etc-love

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

Well, after years and years and years and years of not doing it... I'm finally here.  No excuse why I haven't joined the forum sooner.  I spend most of my time lurking around the Facebook and tumblr of Utena chatting.  I began watching Utena when I was 14, our local Blockbuster had the first VHS.  So I bought the second and third tape.  Then DVDs started becoming more of a thing so I bought the DVD box sets.  This was in a time before you just went and bought the whole box.  No, you'd have the Rose Arc box that came with the first DVD and then filled in your box as each DVD released.  And slowly, it happened.  I watched episode 39 when I was 21 years old.  I grew up with Utena during my formative years moving towards adulthood.  This show revolutionized my life.  Not sure what else to go with from here except hi, nice to meet you all.

Re: [Welcome] Introduce yourself here!!

I'm a student from Rhode Island, and though I've always loved comics and manga, I never really took a shine to anime because watching takes more time than reading. But I had heard of RGU from a lot of comic sites and I finally read the manga. I really liked it, but didn't watch the show until it turned out that my imitation-Netflix had he dub. (I like the dub a lot) I blew through it, it was amazing and I introduced a friend to it. Now I'm trying to read and watch every single Utena thing possible. I joined the forum to get the game and novels, but I hope to be a worthwhile addition to IRG.

Basics:
Name: Toyin (Revolutionary)
Age: 15
Avatar: A character from this rhythm game Trap Volume Two
Favorite Books: Redwall, Bad Kitty, Ruby Redfort, Clarice Bean
Favorite Comics: Hopeless Savages, Courtney Crumrin, The Wicked + The Divine (I read so many
Favorite Manga: Otoyomegatari, Musashi #9, Gals!, The Utena Movie
Favorite Shows: RGU, Jacob Two-Two, Sally Bollywoof, Sandra the Fairytale Detective (I love cartoons)

I'm up for most anything!

Hi. I'd say that I love ŠKU, but that should be pretty clear.

My favorite character- well, all of them are great. Personally, Nanami's the cutest, and Miki is the most relatable. I'm not sure what that has to do with my arbitrary liking for Kozue.

I'm curious to see if my signature will show up with the background blending in appropriately or not.
