Re: Sarazan Mai

That looks pretty...
Is the realistic backgrounding going to stay throughout the entire show?

Re: Sarazan Mai

Interesting to note: the co-writer is not the one from penguindrum and yka.

Re: Sarazan Mai

I just watched. It was definitely on the extremely weird side of the Ikuhara spectrum. I think by comparison it makes Penguindrum look normal. The beginning was confusing but it made more sense at the end. Not sure how I feel about it yet, we'll see in a few episodes.

Re: Sarazan Mai

Yeah I have no idea how to react to this at all. But, that's what I thought when YKA started and by the end of that I found the first episode very clear, so...

I think my only complaint is that you can tell they had to rush things to get it to fit into one episode, because there's only gonna be 11 of these things.

Re: Sarazan Mai

Only 11 episodes? I hope that's enough. I guess YKA only had 12, but that one seemed a little rushed to me too.

Re: Sarazan Mai

I really enjoyed the first episode. We had a movie night with a friend and this was one of my picks. I laughed pretty much all throughout (we had some wine, okay) while she would just throw odd looks between myself and the TV. She didn't like it.
I guess it is most like Yuri Kuma, only in more surreal frames and with male protagonists. Looking forward to the next episodes.
Welcome back, forum. emot-smile

Re: Sarazan Mai

I'm starting to enjoy it. It took me a while to warm up though.

Anyway I'm rewatching Penguindrum and I noticed this.

Coincidence?  🤔

Re: Sarazan Mai

The Conned-by-friend-into-debt Backstory: Sarazanmai (2019) vs Seinen Kakumei Utena (2016)

Just finished Sarazanmai episode 4 (airing May 2019). I thought the revelation about the Kuji family falling into debt (and later crime) after being conned by some “friend” sounds eeriely familiar somehow.  And then I remember this:

“Kenzan-kun did not incur the debt out of greed or other character failings,” said this solemn-faced man, who bore much resemblance to the broiled down Natsume Kanba – currently huddled up against the feisty curly-haired girl of the group.  “Rather, he became the guarantor for the huge loan out of loyalty to an old friend of his.  But that friend disappeared on Kenzan-kun, leaving the Takakura family to carry the full blunt of the debt.”

– Excerpt from Seinen Kakumei Utena Part 37 (posted Feb 2016).

Ah, so that’s why.

Re: Sarazan Mai

I really liked ep 5. I'm curious about the policemen, too. It's going to be a long wait till the next week's episode.
