Re: Akio used in Anime Detour anti-harassment poster

Just as a complete sideline, is it just me or are those nips drawn really fucking weirdly? It looks for all the world like they dabbed in as an afterthought just before press. "Wait, is there something missing here? Oh my god! Someone fetch me some water colours and a number two brush!" I went and looked in one of my art books to see if it were drawn in by a fan or something but nah, it's official. I guess it's another example of rushed production values.

Re: Akio used in Anime Detour anti-harassment poster

I'm pretty sure drawing the areola was going far enough for them given he already looks like a total creep and is allegedly still from a show for young people. Drawing distinct nipples as well would probably have been a bit too much, and would actually look bad in the image, which is otherwise drawn in fairly thick lines.

Welp. at least he got them here!

(poor Free! guys, poor NGE girls, poor Utena anime guys...)

But yeah. Anime is mostly simplified and nipples would be...distracting, and hard to make so they look natural. Unless it's a Satoshi Kon film, of course.

Re: Akio used in Anime Detour anti-harassment poster

RE: MissMocha

A word before we start, my ‘agree to disagree’ comment up post -– the short one where I was quoting Decrescent Daytripper and only him -- was directed at DD only.

My original point in this thread has been that Akio never does anything that bystanders could call the cops on him for, and so he shouldn't be used on an anti-harassment ad.  You’ve disagreed with me citing your own reasons: that’s fine, we can agree to disagree here too.

However, there are parts of your posts that leads me to believe that I’ve been misunderstood and mischaracterized.  So I’ll go over those now.

I’ll get this one out of the way first:

man, you didn't even respond to the comedy argument I made.

Please see my post to DD: I’ve already responded as early as 04:52:51 PM:
http://forums.ohtori.nu/viewtopic.php?p … 40#p260740

So a creep is only a creep in public?

That is not what I mean.  Creeps can be creeps anywhere, on con operating site or far away from the con.  My comment was written in the context of my reaction to Anime Detour’ ad, specifically the text:

Don’t be this guy
Keep our con creep free.
See harassment happening?  Speak up!

I was writing largely in reaction to the above wording, thus why I was only talking about 3rd person reporting of harassment, and have not covered victims themselves reporting in my up posts.

Me wrote:

The former uses sophisticated words and luxury setting to dazzle girls into throwing themselves at him

MissMocha wrote:

Kinda' sounding like you idolize him here, dude.

I can always go the wordy route and write up chapter summaries about how this evil, damning character uses knowledge on life, on stars, on flowers plus self-owned planetarium, luxury car, horse(s) etc to seduce the females.  My original one liner is less chunky, and why I wrote it that way.

AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAAH oh my god, the misandry card, really? So, we paint Akio as a vile seducer, and that's... misandry? I don't care if I get banned for that, but man, come on. Really? As far as the prostitution..."argument," there's NO equivalency! Akio being correctly identified as someone who engages in sexually aggressive behavior is in no way the same thing as saying a promiscuous girl is a prostitute. Jesus christ.

If Anime Detour’s ad is a meme that really do read “this is a vile seducer”, then yes, they’ve correctly identified Akio.  As it is, they say  ‘See harassment happening?  Speak up!’ then they are likening Akio, a male seducer (of willing victims) to a sexual harasser (of unwilling victims).  I understand you’ve stated your opinion on the matter:

Both are in it because they view the person they're after as an object. Ultimately, they're the same thing, just differing levels of "good at it" and approach.

(nods) Yes, one similarity these two share is their both being morally corrupted people.  And people can rightfully hate them both.

But, we ’re debating in context of an anti-harassment ad at an anime con, where people are encouraged to speak up so the organizers can call law enforcement officers.  In this case, the existing laws and legal definitions become relevant.  Different approaches/actions do lead to different consequences for the bad people involved.

So I’ll ask these question:

a) When indicted, will a seducer operating like Akio, who seduces an over age of consent (by location) female self-claiming to be willing (like Utena pre ep 37), get the same heavy fines and sentence as a sexual harasser of an unwilling female?  I know the cops can arrest a sexual harassers, but can they arrest someone for being a 'seducer only' by legal definition in today's world?

If the answer is no to both questions, then I do not think these two types of evil men are equal within the context of this argument, which has always been about what is or is not a legit representation of an arrest-worthy  ‘con creep’.

END RE: MissMocha

I also know there has been many who say Anime Detour’s poster works fine as a creepster depiction - long as people don’t know Akio and/or ignore strict definitions surrounding Akio.  IMHO, the image looks too much like a drawn version of a glamour shoot to be appropriate for use in an anti-harassment ad; the fact that this image also incites people to talk about nipples irks me out more when I think of its current usage.  I do, however, understand that different people can maybe see different things when looking at the very same image.  Plus we all have our different sensitivity levels, so I’m not gonna pursue the matter of the image’s appearance further at this thread.

Though, if you ask me, this SKU moment:

http://ohtori.nu/gallery/var/resizes/Series/Episodes/Student_Council_Arc/03/Series_ep03_022.jpg

would fit an anti-harassment ad far, far, better.

Glamour Shots has gotten way more liberal than I remember it being in the 90s, then. emot-biggrin

gorgeous, you're right on many points. I agree with the interpretation that technically Akio doesn't rape anybody, etc, etc. But I think you're just reading into this too much. It's a picture that to most any idle glance will register as a creep. If you saw someone with their shirt off and pinching their nips/stroking their chest, you'd probably avoid them. You offer the image of Touga molesting Utena's hair, and that's legit enough, but speaking from the perspective of someone trying to convey information as firmly and memorably as possible? Akio wins, hands down. It just pops better, and advertising is always about drawing attention. Akio suits that purpose nicely, whether you think he'd molest women at a convention or not.

Which, for the record, I do. You can cleverly and seductively gain the consent of your victims and still be a disgusting creep. Hey, that's what I like about him. You refer to how sauve he is and how that doesn't compare at all to the level of harassment expected at a convention, but I think the message is the opposite, and for the better by using him, if you know the character enough to find that context. They're trying to tell people that no harassment is acceptable, whether it's grunting and assgrabbing or elaborate emotional manipulation that promises to inflate you fledging cosplay ego. By using Akio as an example instead of a drooling nerd, though, they aren't specifically targeting half their own population and saying 'You're all creeps.' Akio looks like the bad guy on the poster, gets the point across, but himself represents like 0% of the con population, so you're not risking hurting anyone's feelings or profiling a group of congoers as guilty before they've been it. Literally the only person who stands to suffer from being profiled by that poster is Akio, or any dude walking around in a similar state of undress. And well, they deserve it.

Re: Akio used in Anime Detour anti-harassment poster

If you have the balls to cosplay Akio, and that poster is at your convention, you have a moral responsibility to ham it up so hard no one takes you seriously. Seriously, you should be trying to seduce doorknobs at that point.

S'what I'd do. cool

(BTW, that's another point. The likelihood of Akio cosplay is very small, so that situation is less likely to present itself. Another reason to use him as your whipping boy*.)

Re: Akio used in Anime Detour anti-harassment poster

And here I thought it was just a really funny poster, from the perspective of a SKU fan and on point, from a general 'harrassment is bad' perspective. I would probably be tempted to steal the poster, but perhaps after the con or near the end of it, so I do not betray some sense of moral obligation. Because the message is relevant.

Necro-ing this thread beyond belief, but my photo of this at Anime Detour garnered plenty of attention on tumblr, and it's by revolutionaryjo.

What's the point? Art is so useless. It's such a waste of time!
And it's not like anyone else ever wastes time. It's not like you spend hours in front of the television or the computer accomplishing absolutely nothing.

Thoughts? Obviously having a no-harassment policy is good for a con, but does it give our Big Bad an unfair rap?

Re: Akio used in Anime Detour anti-harassment poster

I'm kind of glad I missed the argument on this one. Akio is a shit, and yes, he is creepy, and no, it's not the same as assgrabbing or whatever at cons but the picture used is like... perfect. If you saw someone do that in real life at a con, you would probably be looking for somewhere to report them. End of story.

If it's not clear, I fully endorse this use of Akio and I love the fact that someone thought to use him.
