Re: Saparmurat Niyazov is dead: the notable deaths thread.

Pterry was one of the authors that I could consistently count on for smart, well-written fantasy. There were a few that weren't the top of the list, but nearly every Discworld book I picked up? I could count on it to be good. And with roughly 50 books or so in total (including Good Omens and etc), that's pretty damn impressive.

It's so weird, getting worked up about famous peoples' deaths, especially when you know it's going to happen. But he was a formative influence in shaping who I am and the type of writer I am and well. Death comes to everyone, but Terry at least made him sound a little less frightening.

I'm going to sit and be quiet for a while.

Herberto Helder, notable Portuguese poet has passed away. One of the few people who still can write in this country, a true loss.

Ruth Rendell is no longer with us. She will be greatly missed as one of the great dames of criminal literature.

Re: Saparmurat Niyazov is dead: the notable deaths thread.

I completely missed Ben E King dying. Or blocked it out.

Devastated, even though he was clearly old and been having trouble the last few years. Reminded of what Willy DeVille said, that he'd like to say when King passed everyone would recognize his genius, but it wouldn't be true. Like very nice weather, King feels so essentially right and pure in the world, that we don't recognize that as an accomplishment, as something notable.

Which is a damn shame.

Sir Christopher Lee is gone.

Farewell, good sir. I would have liked to have seen you as Gandalf just once.

That shit sucks. Such a fantastic actor and by all accounts a helluva guy.

Watching Wicker Man tonight, in his honor.

Apparently mr. Ornette Coleman, the free jazz sax man also died yesterday. Rest in peace.

[EDIT] Heard from a friend but didn't check it, just saying.

James Horner, who composed many famous film scores, died in a plane crash.

Patrick Macnee, of the 60s British series The Avengers, died yesterday at 93.

Harvey Pollack, the only employee that has continuously worked for the NBA since its inaugural season in 1946, died Tuesday at 93.

Dick van Patten, of Eight is Enough and a bunch of stuff you've certainly seen him in at some point, also died Tuesday at 86.
