Re: Let's Play! Utena, Round 2: Don't Get in Cars With Strangers

Man, Miki sure gets flustered at the thought of liking us. I'm siding with Juri, it was a funny joke.

I don't really know which choice is her special item. Probably the locker I guess, I'm not sure what relavence the name tags have. But we better help Utena soon, Chigusa's fighting with the lace of longinus!

Re: Let's Play! Utena, Round 2: Don't Get in Cars With Strangers

Okay, let's get moving, we have some ghosts to bust. Touga is Peter, Miki can be Egon, and Juri, I guess you're Ray. D-ko is... Dana? vemot-confusedv

D-ko:
Right, the name tags!
On the wall of the fencing hall,
there are the name tags of all its members.
That's gotta be it!

http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/5503/00000883.png

D-ko:
The fencing club name tags...
or rather, the ones from fifteen years ago.

Juri:
Look! This one has Sanjouin's name.

D-ko:
It's Chigusa-san's name!
And next to it is mom's old name.

We know our parents' first names, if you'll recall: our father is named Masaomi (雅臣, elegant-retainer) and our mother, Koto (湖都, lake-city). Apparently, our mother's maiden name started with the character 者, but the Saturn's resolution is pretty terrible and I can't make out the second character. Anyone?

D-ko:
I guess Chigusa's story was true after all...

Touga:
How odd. The club advisor's spot is empty.

D-ko:
Only the club advisor's name tag is missing...?
But from what I've heard, my dad should have had one, too.

Miki:
Anyway, we should try breaking the name tag.

Juri:
Yeah, that's got to be the yorishiro.

Touga:
Alright, leave it to me.

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/2218/00000885.png

Juri:
Apparently it wasn't.

Miki:
Can you think of any other possibilities?

Woah, Touga just stone cold cut that thing in half. They don't mess around when it comes to breaking stuff. cool

http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/336/00000889.png
http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/7678/00000891.png
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/9291/00000892.png
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/9752/00000893.png
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/5295/00000897.png

At the end of the mini-dueling sequence, a rose disappears from Utena's little meter on the right. I assume that if her points were much lower and we kept making bad choices here, she could conceivably lose the duel. Luckily, she has more than enough points to buffer us.

CHOICE:
The locker
The calendar

D-ko:
Yeah, the calendar!
It's got to be that weird calendar.

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/5127/00000935.png

Miki:
...this calendar is pretty tasteless, huh?

Juri:
The 25th is marked.
The 25th... today's date.

D-ko:
Chigusa-san probably did it.
Look at the date on the calendar... it's from fifteen years ago.

Touga:
So it is, now that you mention it.

Juri:
Stay back. I'll take this one.

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/6545/00000899.png

Touga:
Apparently that wasn't it.

Miki:
Can you think of any other possibilities?

If only they had time to burn the whole building to the ground (again). That would have a sort of poetic appeal.

http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/3175/00000905.png
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/1992/00000906.png

Utena, Chigusa, you two aren't doing it right. You can't have a duel where nobody talks. emot-frown

Another rose is scattered, by the way, but whatevs.

CHOICE:
The locker

D-ko:
Right, inside the locker!
When I tried to open the locker,
Chigusa acted kind of weird...

http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/6313/00000908.png

D-ko:
Saionji-san...!

Miki:
Saionji-sempai!?

Touga:
Hey, best friend!
What are you up to in a place like this?

Saionji:
I, I just came to settle things with Sanjouin...

Touga:
Oh...? And here I thought you might have been worried
about our new exchange student here.

Saionji:
Don't be stupid!
Why would I...

Touga:
Hahaha. (Don't try to hide it,) best friend.

Juri:
That's enough, you two.
Now really isn't the time.

"In crisis situations, there's only enough time to tease Miki. We can't afford to split our efforts!"

(p.s. saionji is winston)

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7567/00000912.png

Touga:
I suppose you're right.
So, tell us.
Where's Sanjouin's yorishiro?

D-ko:
Okay... I think it's probably inside that locker.
(She seemed flustered that time.)
There's definitely got to be something in here!

Juri:
I see... Chigusa's locker.
Open it.

D-ko:
Right!

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/9997/00000914.png

D-ko:
This is father's...?

Miki:
A red string. In Ohtori Academy,
they say that's some kind of charm, right?

And so all the pieces come together! school-eng101 If you recall, we heard about this from Wakaba, Font of all Useful Knowledge, back in the first playthrough.

D-ko:
Chigusa-san...
(So you tried this with my father...)

Touga:
Do it.
If you break that, Sanjouin will...

D-ko:
But Chigusa-san...

Juri:
If you don't, you'll disappear!

D-ko:
...

Saionji:
Besides, she's already dead!
Do it!

D-ko:
...
...
...
Chigusa-san... I'm sorry!

Re: Let's Play! Utena, Round 2: Don't Get in Cars With Strangers

Dalbun,

I'm curious on the translation here. I assumed that Chigusa was actually alive in the real world and Akio had simply made it possible for her younger self to be here and compete. Is the implication that Chigusa is actually dead, or that destroying D-Ko's father's name tag merely "removes her from this world" and sends her back to her sad, adult life somewhere else. In the previous conversation, they speak of breaking the bond and sending her back to her previous world, and in the current one, Saionji mentions "she's dead already."

Has there been anything specifically said that Chigusa died at somepoint?

Re: Let's Play! Utena, Round 2: Don't Get in Cars With Strangers

Ashnod, I can't speak to the translation, of course, but earlier we had our interview with the fencing club president:

Dallbun wrote:

According to this,
it looked like the fire at the fencing hall fifteen years ago
was a work of arson.
In the ruins, they found what seemed to be
the body of S-san from the Middle School 2nd Year Class A.

D-ko:
"S"... Sanjouin... Chigusa-san!?

Newspaper Club President:
Yeah... I don't know much about that period,
but I think that S-san was president of the Fencing Club.
Hey, that's right, it was fifteen years ago today...
the date of the fire.
And they say it used to be a really pretty white building...

So Chigusa is officially dead.  That doesn't mean her spirit can't have been put back in a living body by Akio, Anthy, the power of unrequited love, D-ko's voodoo-witch-doctor father, or the raw inertia intrinsic to Ohtori Academy -- and in fact this seems to have happened -- but she definitely died at some point.

I love that the conversation about the moans of the mysterious ukulele turns out to be of supreme relevance!  emot-aaa  This game just gets better and better.

Mixing Utena with Ghostbusters is about the best thing you could ever do! emot-dance

D-ko's awfully apologetic to someone who stuck a tack in her cake mix, knocked her out during a soccer game, tried to poison her with an apple and is planning to make her cease to exist.

I'm glad my theory was right, although I did completely forget about that conversation with Wakaba. (The resentful ukulele was the most memorable aspect.)

Actually, there is something about the casual use of exclamation marks in Touga's dialogue that disturbs me.  I can't help but imagine him all valley girl because of it.

Hey thar bestie!  You totes forgot to call me back last night you skank!

Perhaps because in the series he spends so much time condescending to others when he's not playing the chivalrous prince angle for tail, seeing him so...bubbly...around the other council members is kinda throwing me.

I'm just confused about Chigusa's body.. I know she died in the fire.. but didn't a lot of people, including herself, comment on how much older she looked? (that she stayed back a few years?) So if this is how she looks when she died in the fire, how would she look older if she died at age 15?

Ahhhh, the red string... so creepy!

Re: Let's Play! Utena, Round 2: Don't Get in Cars With Strangers

When I was first spoiled on the plot of the game two years back, I thought Chigusa's motivations were really weak and poorly written, but now I really like her as a villain.

Japan's still very patriarchal, so I wouldn't be surprised if Chigusa spent all her life hearing about how "worthless" and "deviant" she was. ("Can take care of yourself? Sorry, but no one will ever love you.") D-ko's dad was prolly just the breaking point after years of frustration and anger. Since I find it hard to believe that anyone would murder over a mere middle-school crush, perhaps Chigusa didn't want D-ko's dad so much as she wanted to prove to herself that she could be a strong woman and still be loved. While this doesn't justify Chigusa's actions, it does explain them: societies with blatant discrimination are always bound to have people who snap, especially if they have middle school reasoning.

Wait, have they explained exactly the reasoning behind why Chigusa burned down the buiding?  Was it a suicidal act of indiscriminate rage/sadness, or did she have a practical goal in mind?  Did she intend to kill one or both of D-ko's parents or did she hope D-ko's father would save her from the flames?

I mean.

satyreyes is right: that's the conversation where we find out she's dead. Chigusa herself seems to dance around it during her villainous exposition. And I'm not certain how Saionji knows what's going on, since he showed up for the party late.

Chigusa specifically thanks "that person" for her second chance, and it doesn't sound like she's just saying that she's back because D-ko's father done her wrong. My assumption is that she was talking about either Akio or Anthy... probably Akio, since he deals in contracts, though it's possible that Anthy did whatever magical work was required.

The extreme stylization of the art makes this tricky. As far as I can recall, Chigusa says she's three years older, and she looks several years older, but nobody says that she looks older. (Only that she looks tall and striking and awesome. And, for some reason, masculine. emot-rolleyes) So who knows? Maybe she figures that if you're going to come back as a ghost, you might as well come back as a bigger, stronger ghost.

No, I don't really get that, either. It doesn't seem to make much sense, and seems kind of abrupt when she declares it in her monologue.

This is total speculation, but I wonder... could Chigusa be remembering things wrong? Who was there? Who wasn't there? Who really set fire to that building? school-devil Perhaps somebody who wanted Chigusa's spirit available as a vengeful ghost?

Ironically, the original design for Chigusa (which looked a bit like Tokiko with a slightly longer haircut and narrower eyes) was discarded because she appeared too old and masculine.  The designer(s) then went with lighter, longer hair to make Chigusa more feminine, but still made her tall for a woman.

Ha ha, totally awesome.  This storyline is basically the exact opposite of the Nemuro-Mikage storyline in every possible way.  Nemuro comes back in the guise of a student; Chigusa comes back as herself.  Mikage is trying to stop time, to extend an instant into eternity, while Chigusa is trying to turn back time and kill Hitler^H^Hdefeat her rival.  But way more importantly, Mikage is like a mini-Akio, attempting to achieve the PTRTW in order to gain eternity for Mamiya (though of course it's way too late); in just the same way, Akio is attempting (or so he probably tells himself) to restore Anthy qua Sophia, Goddess Wisdom, to her unfallen place, even though Akio is of course the reason she erroneously fell into matter in the first place.  Chigusa, on the other hand, is totally a mini-Anthy, having rejected the dreams of Princesses to embrace the role of the Witch -- and, as others in the thread have mentioned, very possibly without any more choice in the matter than Anthy had.  Since "that person" for Nemuro was definitely Akio, with secondary assistance from Anthy, I'll venture a guess that "that person" here is Anthy, and that the whole thing might be some kind of backlash against, or test of, the kind of nobility that Chigusa rails against, that Utena has so far been displaying, and that Anthy can no longer bring herself to believe in.

Ozma: If the original design for Chigusa looks like Tokiko, that's even better.

Anyway, back talking like a person, Ooooh, I'm happy to finally find out what happened!  etc-love Dalbun!

So we're getting the perfect ending, so everyone rescues us after Chigusa defeated us and presumably locks us in a room.  I assume if you win a character's ending, he or she comes alone to rescue D-ko.  What about the Utena ending?  Maybe D-ko has attained enough inner strength from admiring Utena that she can break out of the room on her own?  Or maybe D-ko beats Chigusa in their little sword-smackdown, and then Chigusa wanders off to her duel anyway?  I wonder I wonder!

You would think that after the first few rage induced arsons, Ohtori would learn to start making thier buildings somehow fire retardant. Or at least have a minimum of one fire extinguisher in every room.

You would think that after the first few rage induced arsons, Ohtori would learn to start making thier buildings somehow fire retardant. Or at least have a minimum of one fire extinguisher in every room.

Somehow this reminds me of that line from a Simpsons halloween episode, where Principal Skinner is listing off To Do items for the PTA to vote on; most of them they vote no, on the basis of cost alone. Then comes: "Recharge fire extinguishers -- now remember, this is a free service of the fire department?" "NAY."

My work here is done.

However, there are still a couple loose ends to wrap up in the game.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8229/00000939.png

This is actually the background picture for a save point. Seems like kind of an odd time for one, but okay. I point it out because... are those the towers that people watch the duels from? emot-aaa Is this the only shot of them?

http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/3059/00000940.png

Utena:
Man, what a shame...
just when I thought we were becoming friends,
you have to go and transfer again.

Anthy:
But her father is sick,
so there's no helping it, Utena-sama.

D-ko:
Honestly, I also want to stay at Ohtori Academy, but...
I also can't leave my mother to take care of him alone.

Utena:
I see... well, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Our poor father... sounds like he was struck with a case of Akio-Wants-Us-Out-Of-Ohtori-Now-itis.

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/7273/00000945.png

Touga:
(In the end, I'm afraid that that coming to Ohtori Academy
brought you nothing but bad experiences.)

D-ko:
No, Touga-san, (you treated me really well).
And...
That night is something I'll never forget.

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/2195/00000948.png

Touga:
I'm honored.
If you don't mind, I hope you'll visit again.

D-ko:
Of course! Thank you.

"By the way, when I said 'that night,' I meant the night we totally had sex, not any of those other nights. ...why does everyone look so embarassed?"

http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/3248/00000949.png

Saionji:
I'm sorry about before.

D-ko:
Eh?

Saionji:
On your first day.

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/4563/00000951.png

Flashback Saionji:
Hey. What about you, transfer student?
On the same day you come here, this incident happens.
It's too much to be mere coincidence.

http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/3248/00000949.png

D-ko:
No, it's fine.
To be honest,
at first I thought you were really scary, Saionji-san.
But now I understand that you're a very forthright person.

Saionji:
I'm not really...

D-ko:
Thank you, Saionji-san.
Keep at it on both the path of the sword and the path of love.

Saionji:
(vocalized sound of vague agreement)

And as long as we're giving Saionji advice, can we point out that Wakaba is the awesomest person in the entire school, and he should totally get his act together?

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4200/00000961.png

Juri:
It must have been difficult for you,
but I think the fact that we surmounted this
was (thanks to your self-confidence.)
(You also showed good strength in your fencing arm.)
I hope that you'll try to continue with it.

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/270/00000964.png

Juri:
Do your best at your new school, as well.

D-ko:
Yes. You do your best too, Juri-san.

Juri:
Mm.

D-ko: "Also, here's a rose. Believe in miracles, and your wish will come true! See you!"

http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/7675/00000965.png

Miki:
Sempai, you really helped me in a lot of ways.
If you hadn't come here, I don't know what the Student Council would have done...

D-ko:
Thanks, Miki-kun.
You also helped me out a lot.
Now hang in there, just like I taught you.
Please take care of Miki-kun, Anthy.

Anthy:
Certainly?

Miki:
S, sempai! This isn't the place for...
Himemiya-san, just ignore that! It wasn't anything...

It's really cute the way the game is calling back to all our previous activities. We slept with Touga, fenced with Juri, tutored Miki, and... uh... Saionji was also around.

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/6504/00000968.png

Utena:
Man, and I thought that we'd be able to become good friends...
The East Dorm kind of felt a lot bigger with you around.

D-ko:
If you go and say things like that,
it's going to make it harder for me to leave!
Thanks, Utena.
If you hadn't been there,
I think I might have given up partway through.
I'm really grateful to you, Utena.

http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/3071/00000969.png

Utena:
Ahh, I'm gonna get kinda embarassed
if you talk so earnestly like that.
But, I'm happy.
I hope you come back and visit.
You're totally welcome, whenever.

D-ko:
Thank you, Utena.

Utena:
Also, here.

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/5867/00000970.png

D-ko:
It's...!?

Utena:
I brought it from the Dueling Arena.
It's an important item that you got from your parents, right?

So... Chigusa was using that sword in the final duel? If so, we can add Sword Transmutation to the ever-expanding list of awesome things one can do with swords in Utena.

D-ko:
Yeah...
I'm sorry, Chigusa-san...
Honestly, from the times we spent walking in the park,
and going shopping in town,
I think that we might have been able to become good friends...
If there's such a thing as reincarnation,
then next time, we'll definitely...

http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/4003/00000971.png

Utena:
What's wrong?

D-ko:
Huh?

Utena:
Maybe you'd rather not take it?

D-ko:
No, it's not that!
Thanks, Utena.
(It had been on my mind.)

Utena:
Yeah? I'm glad.

Anthy:
Utena-sama, it's about time...

Utena:
Yeah... I guess you've gotta get going.
Or your plane will leave...

http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/3059/00000940.png

D-ko:
Everyone, thank you so much.
I'll always remember all of you, and this school.

"...and the dreadful chords of the resentful ukulele, which will forever haunt my nightmares."

And now, boring old credits...

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/3987/00000972.png

...interspersed with pretty pictures!

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/5536/00000978.png

I like the shot of D-ko with her parents. She's all pretending that she'll ever be able to look at them without imagining squicky sex between someone her age and a much older authority figure. How sweet.

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/5832/00000979.png

Akio:
Sanjouin Chigusa...
The evil queen was brought down by the prince after all.
But as an experiment in (having a manifested soul serve as a Duelist),
it was a success.
Yes, after all, she was no more than a test case.
For the sake of our next move...
I'm counting on you, Anthy.

Akio: truly a man of science. Next, an experiment in having a kangaroo serve as a Duelist. YOU'LL NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/3810/00000990.png
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/3549/00000991.png

I deliberately caught the date box on this shot, because it strikes me that Akio's dialogue in the last scene is a little odd. Chigusa was a test case for Mikage? But Mikage is already walking around on the 25th, as evidenced both here, and in our previous playthrough, where D-ko ran into him just before talking with Juri and getting picked up in the Akio Car.

I dunno, maybe he was so excited that the Chigusa thing worked that he went ahead and set up Mikage as soon as possible. It just seems kind of hasty, is all.

http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/5392/00000994.png

Mamiya:
Please make me the Rose Bride...
you promised, after all.

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/4397/00000996.png

Mikage:
Ah, indeed.
For your sake, I'll obtain it.
The Power to Revolutionize the World...

"But first, let's putter around for another four or five episodes."

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/7673/00000999.png

Female Student:
Huh? The Fencing Club?
Well, it exists, but it's activities are suspended.
It doesn't have any members.

Other Female Student:
Were you planning on joining it?

D-ko:
Yeah. Look, I even brought my saber.

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/1582/00001001.png

Female Student:
Woah... so you've done a lot of fencing?

D-ko:
No, not at all.

Other (?) Female Student:
Huh? But, your saber...

D-ko:
I want to start.
I'm a total beginner.
But there's someone I want to catch up with...
Someone much stronger than me.

Female Student:
Hmm...

http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/3854/00001002.png

D-ko:
Some day, I'll return to Ohtori Academy.
And then, I'll show that person how much stronger I've become...

Re: Let's Play! Utena, Round 2: Don't Get in Cars With Strangers

So much love to you for doing this!  etc-loveetc-loveetc-loveetc-loveetc-love  Both for your awesome translations and for your hilarious commentary!  But now that I see the juxtaposition of all these pics together, I do find it mildly disturbing that D-Ko had such a good time with Touga (even though I am guilty of voting in that direction)--and that Touga looks so stunningly like her own dad.

Re: Mikage's lingering spirit, if the implication is that he is well and truly dead--how did he die in the fire?  I'd always assumed that Akio's phone call to him meant his ejection to the real world (and yes, I know there are a multitude of theories about what actually happened to him).  But within the game continuity, if he did die when Nemuro Memorial Hall burned down--when Tokiko slapped him for setting the fire, he was standing OUTSIDE the building.  So how did he burn with it?  After she slapped him, did he realize he'd made a mistake and then just... give up, and go inside the building and let himself die?

Because if that happened, that's even more tragic than his story is already.  emot-gonk

Your guess is as good as mine, but the fact that Mikage doesn't have a yorishiro suggests that he isn't dead like Chigusa. Also, the word Akio uses that I translated as "spirit" is "tamashii," and it can mean a lot of things... soul, psyche, whatever. Maybe Mikage and Chigusa are summoned by Akio in a similar way, but they're not exactly the same.

Re: Let's Play! Utena, Round 2: Don't Get in Cars With Strangers

I remember that episode of the Simpsons

Anywho, yay! We reached the end without getting killed! I don't know if it's just me but Juri looks very pretty with that last smiling facial expression towards us; Saionji has been in a constant state of blushing since the locker room. And I was really expecting our parting words to Miki being something about how his sister threw us down a flight of stairs. Too bad we got kicked out of Ohtori, I guess we just didn't have enough psychological problems that could be exploited by Akio at a later time to stay around.

Thank you Dalbun!! I would totally have your babies etc-loveetc-love
