Re: Fans of Le Television

I plan to watch it tonight. In the meantime, amuse yourself with the (spoiler-free) twitter account, "Hannibal at the Zoo".
https://twitter.com/ZooHannibal

"The monkey touches himself not to feel pleasure, but to demonstrate to the zookeeper that he cannot be controlled." etc-saiowank

"If you were to escape, tortoise, you would be forgotten almost immediately, invisible. It is your enclosure that makes you a god."

BTW, thanks for making me a Thorn Of Death. school-devil

EDIT: well, I watched it. Holy crap.

No spoilers, of course, but my reaction to the finale was maniacal laughter and a slow-clap. Goddammit, Fuller, you've done it again. My friend, on the other hand, got a case of FANGIRL RAEG, so it's safe for you to assume that stuff happens.

Man. I don't usually go in for nostalgia, but there's one show I loved and never got to see all of back when it was airing. Probably most of you have never heard of it-- It's called Cybersix and I think it only ever aired in Canada. You want a summary? Well...

It's about a genetically engineered crossdresser who teaches Literature in high school by day and fights the creations of a Nazi mad scientist by night.

Have I convinced you to check it out yet? Either way, take a look at the opening. It's pretty stylish.

Oh, and if the premise sounded a little like Dark Angel, well, the creators thought so too and tried to sue Cameron and Fox for stealing their shit, but they couldn't afford to keep it going so he "won". Sucks. emot-mad

On the other hand, it's getting a dvd release. Finally! Hopefully it makes some cash for the creators. etc-love

Wow. the opening it's cool and it's so "japanese anime", and for me this is a HUGE positive point. I'll have a look, sometimes, there's a subbed version? I can watch it without, just that it's a little difficult for me to follow speaking english, but I can understand most of it.

Also, did anyone mentioned Orphan Black?
I'm watching the first season, and I think it's cool.

The original comic was Italian, so you should be able to find some copies, although I doubt it's still in print. Didn't know they'd made a kid's show out of it; considering that the comic has pedophilia and nazis I'm a little surprised. Note though, I know nothing about it, except in context of an article discussing Skydoll where it was mentioned.

The first time you looked at her curves you were hooked
And the glances you took, took hold of you and demanded that you stay
And sunk in their teeth, bit your heart and released

Oh, and if the premise sounded a little like Dark Angel, well, the creators thought so too and tried to sue Cameron and Fox for stealing their shit, but they couldn't afford to keep it going so he "won". Sucks. emot-mad

On the other hand, it's getting a dvd release. Finally! Hopefully it makes some cash for the creators. etc-love

Wow. the opening it's cool ad it's do "japanese anime", and for me this is a HUGE positive point. I'll have a look, sometimes, there's a subbed version? I can watch it without, just that it's a little difficult for me to follow speaking english, but I can understand most of it.

Wow, really?? emot-aaa
I guess I should reaserch more of our comics. Thank you! You made me al little proud emot-dance

Re: Fans of Le Television

So I finally got around to watching Breaking Bad, which I had put off for a long time because I generally am bored by a lot of live action dramas.  They feel like repetitious, high-tension gossiping with very little happening in-between, except for some short bursts of boobs and violence.  It's why I like animation and anime, actually.  I like watching things happen.  And, I like to watch women do more than be worrisome, complicit housewives or the mid-life crisis affair or be the handy sexualized victim.

So far (I'm midway into season 2) Breaking Bad is choc full of THINGS.  Things happening, in fact!  People moving around from place to place, decisions being made, grunt work being done, lots of things!  And it's genuinely funny.  And, and, Skyler, the pregnant housewife?  They are totally building something with her, I can tell.  It's all like, she don't know what's going on, but I don't think her sitting around angry about it is their plan for her character.  She confronts Walt in honest, ingenious ways, and she is the kind of woman who gets shit done, means or no.  She's smart and takes ballsy steps.  If he and Jesse were to let her in on what's happening, she'd be nothing but an asset.

Plus, Hank the DEA agent and his wife.  They are the perfect representation of what likable assholes look like in real life.  Not charming and sophisticated anti-heroes or stoic bad boys with their clever wordplay, but the kind of people who are for the most part honest, and good, and you love them, but holy shit can they suddenly spew out some awful, hateful, immature and ignorant shit and you accept that because, well.  Family.  And that's just when they decide to show you the best side of themselves.

Oh, and Jesse Pinkman is the cutest little methhead like my ovaries react very strongly to him.  He needs to be snuggled and let me cook him tomato soup and grilled cheese and make an appointment with the local clinic for him.

Re: Fans of Le Television

I don't watch a great deal of television as I have limited cable and am too lazy to scour websites for shows, but I'll list some of the things I watch.

I'm somewhat of a nerd as the show I watch almost religiously is Jeopardy! I like to participate in answering the questions as best I can along with my stepfather who watches the show with me. Even if I can't answer some of the questions, I enjoy learning new things. Hehe.. I bet Miki would enjoy watching a general knowledge quiz show such as this. (Hmm... SKU Character Television Tastes would make an amusing thread topic.)

Sometimes I watch American Ninja Warrior, a sports entertainment competition spin-off of the Japanese television series Sasuke. Most recently I enjoyed the episodes in which Kacy Catanzaro was kicking ass and taking names, culminating in the episode in which she became the first woman ever to complete a city finals course in this show. emot-dance

Also...Netflix shows count, yes? I watched Netflix-exclusive Orange is the New Black.

Re: Fans of Le Television

I don't watch a lot television anymore but recently I found Storage Wars and I like it., Yeah, I know probably everything in the show is fake but I still found it entertaining. I like seeing what they found in the storages and also if they would win or lost money.

Does anyone have links to good analyses of Twin Peaks? Just the TV series, please; I've not yet seen Fire Walk With Me.

Re: Fans of Le Television

A very productive winter break this was, yeah... Started a gazillion new shows that I'm not sure I'll ever get to finish.

History's Vikings is ok and beautifully made and all, but me and my brother hate and I mean HATE Floki, and would like nothing better than to shank him right between those two streaks of runny eyeliner. He's a pretty popular character and I don't get why people like such dicks. He's a bag of evil and he ain't even charming!

Which brings me to someone who is. The titular character himself is probably the only thing that helped me eat up season 1 of Hannibal (well, along with Gillian Anderson I guess), against the laughably incompetent FBI and Will, who started off ok but then just kept making himself a problem. Well, others made him a problem to be fair, but he still dragged. Sorry, Will emot-frown
Gotta start butchering that second season soon.

I have been pretty regular with the Walking Dead, however. Despite avoiding the series and being pretty sure (even into season 2) that I don't like this show and wondering why on earth am I watching it, it managed to grow on me. And is pretty dependably breaking my heart every two episodes.

Also I kind of sort of watched the first ep of Twin Peaks, per my dad's recommendation. I was dead tired and fell asleep during the episode finale. That camerawork is so wankalicious and the music too, but it's a series it'll take some time getting into. Dad says it's worth it, though, so I'll give it a shot at least.

Yeah... I've been veeery productive alright...

...damnnnn. This thread is still going eight years after I started it. That's dedication.

Also, Utena fans should get onboard Twin Peaks. It's does the metaphysical thing pretty well.

I'm working through my trashy junkfood shows, so Nip Tuck is at the top of my list. It's terrible and I love it.

Corner Gas needs to have a comeback. And, Boston Legal. Which would cross over. And, not just sexually.

This is very true. Especially with the new season coming up in a year, and the new movie in the boxset.

How naughty is it? The novels were fairly racy.
And like....the badguy who has the hots for Jamie, do they play that up for all it's worth? I love me some badguy ravishing. etc-jurishlick

They haven't gotten to the badguy ravishing yet. However, it has a wonderful scene with Claire getting some oral from her husband in like... the first episode, I think. I'm serious, it's really awesome the way they handle sex. It's realistic, it shows Claire enjoying it without all the traditional "slut" hallmarks that usually come along with that, and it's... believable. You know she enjoys it, you know her husband(s) enjoy it, you know it's a warm, affectionate thing, and in some cases you can see that it's the glue holding her relationships together. Like with Frank-- they barely know each other anymore, and they're trying to make it work, and the fact that they both enjoy sex is helping them to get comfortable and make a real relationship again.

Okay, so I ranted. I love the way they handle sex, though. And seeing a guy enjoy going down on a chick is super rare, I love that they did it.

Re: Fans of Le Television

I'd be very surprised if they back out of the bad guy thing. They haven't skimped on content so far, which is fantastic.

I have season 3 of House of Cards but I'm afraid to watch it because then I'll do nothing else for like days. emot-gonk

Re: Fans of Le Television

Watching the second Twin Peaks movie, and it's always bothered me that the little dude was also evil/differently-moral, because y'know, he's cute and dances, but... he is the arm the guy cut off for being fucking evil. So, of course he is. You wouldn't expect Ash's severed hand start tended a charming bar in Boston by the end of Evil Dead 2, either.

Which leads me to an important question: What're some good examples of and-then-the-nice-fluffy-one-turned-fucking-evil in TV? Not by the end of one episode, but after whole arcs or seasons, like Magnum PI or, as above, Twin Peaks.

Re: Fans of Le Television

I'm about two thirds of the way through the first season of Helix. And I have to say that everyone in this series is too dumb to live. I don't mean the standard, "FFS stupid blonde bimbo teenager, don't walk into the creepy dark forest in the middle of the night when there's a murderer about!" horror trope either. The main characters in the series, and most of the secondary characters, are all of them supposed to be brilliant, top of their fields, full blown geniuses. Every episode at least one of them will rattle off the alphabet soup after their name to explain that why yes, they have a triple PhD and five masters in chemistry, biology, medicine, bio mechanics... and then they'll do something like handle specimens with no gloves and face masks, fuck all containment protocols to hell, not perform basic checks, not share their results, hide their experiments, not check in with each other even though they each of them is working alone and isolated, walk down vacant and isolated corridors alone when there's fucking zombies loose and hunting, being genuinely surprised when they get attacked, and then resuming their walk as if they'd never had their close encounter of the necrotic kind. Rinse and repeat.

[Okay, so the plot goes that in a secret base in the Artic that's doing all kinds of viral and bacteriological research. So far so good. Then it turns out that one of their exquisitely engineered microbeasties has escaped- oh noes!- and is killing people in strange and interesting ways. Thus, a crack team from the Centre for Disease Control is scrambled. This group of brilliant scientists, the top of their field, magnificently professional... and the first thing that the audience was supposed to focus in on was the complicated and highly intertwined love lives of theirs.

One of the characters goes out of their way to explain all of this, and adds that they are far too professional to let their personal lives affect their work. Like fuck! They moon over each other, they confess their feelings, they vow loyalty, every fucking conversation is centred around their (justified) sense of inadequacy and how much reassurance they need to find the strength and courage to do the basics of their basic fucking job! One is attacked by a zombie and infected and refuses to tell her team mates about it and wanders about blithely, spreading contagion, angsting about her feelings of violation by the whole experience, questioning her own judgement, shooting agonised looks here and there... about three episodes after the attack she finally books herself into the containment ward without much as a basic, "Bye!" to one of her colleagues.

The top scientist spends most of his time mooning over his critically ill brother, playing Rambo outside in the snow when there are fucking guards about whose job it is to do this shit obsessing some more over his brother, utterly refusing to keep in contact or exchange basic but vital information with his colleagues, obsesses over his brother a little more, takes time out of his busy schedule to fuck one of his team, moons over his brother, while every fucking conversation he has with anyone else is centred around him beating his chest and howling that he's the leader, everyone should respect and submit to him, he's butch as fuck and is going to fix everything... but first he's going out for a walk in the snow again and roll around in it with one of the bad guys some more, and then he'll take a little time off to sit with his brother and hold his hand. Then he'll actually do some fucking research and talk to his team, and make some basic decisions. But only after he gives another of his inspirational speeches, and moons over his brother for a little while longer. Then he'll do something rational! Honest!

Then there's Exhibit C: the delicately beautiful, hopelessly naive genius who's desperately in love with the (alleged) leader, who has a double PhD at age 26, has seen it all... guess what make her story so tragic? Oh, she's dying of an inoperable tumour! It affects her speech, her co-ordination, her mental processing abilities... but nevertheless she walks blithely into this hideously dangerous and desperately precarious situation knowing that all of this will drastically affect her ability to function at the very least, and could (and does!) get someone else killed at the worst! She hides an infected patient inside her room even as this patient becomes steadily more irrational and dangerous as the illness progresses, and she knows for a fact that her weakened immune system has fuck all hope against the virus if (when!) this patient turns violent just like all of the other infected did. Also, she's highly dependent on a particular drug to maintain her most basic of functions. And she doesn't think to pack an extra supply of this drug, oh noes! It'd be a shame if, for example, if her single vial of this essential drug were to get tripped over in the bathroom and the entire contents of the vial fell down the sink! We the audience are supposed to feel such tender and melting sympathy for this delicate and fragile creature in her desperate situation; I can't speak for anyone else, but when the stupid bitch started jacking herself up with morphine, I was praying she'd overdose herself and get the whole bullshit charade over with. But, no. She survives another day, and goes on to fuck her boss. Which we're supposed to view as a positive and life affirming choice. Or something. I don't know.

The one interesting character of this crack team gets murdered, after sequencing the killer virus' genome; what was she doing sequencing this genome? Fucked if I know, she's supposed to be a fucking vet! And the hundred or so scientists in the base, who work with the worst pathogens in the world, need to have basic contamination protocols and processes explained to them every half hour, none of them wear basic safety gear, they refuse to be quarantined, the ones not in quarantine refuse to work with the CDC... then the satellite dish gets blown up, and there goes their only link to the outside world! Oh noes! Then it turns out that the entire base's telephone system goes through the satellite, so when the satellite blows they can't even call another floor if they need to! Intercom? Radio? Pfft! Who needs those? It's not like anything could possibly go wrong with that kind of set up!
]

I'm about two thirds of the way through and I'm committed. I'm going to finish this fucker even if my slowly melting brain starts trickling out of my ear. But seriously, I want my $20 back. Helix isn't so bad it's good; it's so bad it's downright dire. People talk about the Idiot Ball trope and how every character in every show gets handed one at some point. But Helix's heroes? They don't get just handed the Idiot Ball. They wear the Idiot Ball costumes, swim in the Idiot Ball ball pit, eat fried Idiot Ball for breakfast, lunch and tea, dry themselves off with an Idiot Ball towel after they've had a shower composed of pureed Idiot Ball...

... basically, what I'm trying to say is that every single fucking character in this show is a fucking moron, and I'm confused as hell as to how any of them are still alive.

Re: Fans of Le Television

I think my problem with the newer seasons of Game of Thrones is easy to sum up.

There is a difference between stories that show how people can be cruel and manipulative, and a story that suggests cruel and manipulative is how people should be.

To me, the only response to discovering that the world is cold and arbitrary is not to be cold and arbitrary in turn.

(See also: why I like the original House of Cards trilogy but can't stand the US version.)
